Agenda Circling Forth - soundtrack discussion
category: music [glöplog]
Just asking:
Who really thought it was original material ? Hypocrite, now hands up!
C'mon, it was obvious that Varia has used samples. It didn't come straight out of his ass by some magical tricks. So as I already said in another place, either he got it from the SUPER-SAMPLING-CD-THAT-CONTAINS-KICKASS-LOOPS-NOBODY-KNOWS (that would suck) or he just got it from some original material (that wouldn't suck as much).
My first thought was NOT "oh fuck, they haven't credited the original composer"... No, I just said to myself: "that music is very cool and fitting the demo perfectly !"
All the drama is because someone knew the original song, post the video to it and now a lot of yet initiated guys act like upset virgins.

but why don't you tell us how you really feel?
I honestly thought it was original work. Mostly because Blunderbuss had an original singer/songwriter song too, and this was, while in a rather different style, more akin to that than to the traditional demo soundtrack, so I kind of assumed they found another artist who could actually sing and produce to do a soundtrack for them.
I've been listening to Socrates a bunch lately and it fucking owns! So I'm happy to actually have discovered them!
yeh ditto.. 'mountains' is also quite nice :)
ahh... this is a kinda sad discussion.
credits for artwork done. easy solution.
anyway; nobody knows I am makin' a tune about it! :)

oxb: actually that would be easy to make
the magical tricks are not that magical
also music sucks, even easier to get done :D
I agree with you, yes music strangely fits demo (not being ironic, the code/gfx rulez)

isn't it time to celebrate such a masterpiece ? :p
the demo has been spread quite a lot on the web, even here : http://ma-tvideo.france3.fr/video/iLyROoafvqK1.html (lol france3, supposed to be the local and senior french tv)
btw... what about the title ??

(i should have written video instead of demo...)
@oxb: don't be pissed off, I'll make you new loops to chop and edit so you ca add guitars and vocals to them :)

Yes, it was indeed the "finding out"-part that made people upset - well spotted. :)All the drama is because someone knew the original song, post the video to it and now a lot of yet initiated guys act like upset virgins.
yeah, the guy who actually posted the video is really a fucker.
Oh wait, I posted it. Oh wait, someone posted it somewhere else first.

So this is not theft, but advertising :)
I bought some Socrates too based on the strength of the music in this demo, just like I bought four Cornelius albums thanks to the music in Propaganda.
the demoscene makes people buy music!!! HOORAY!

Heh, the best thing is most of Cornelius' work is nothing like 'Last Night in Africa' :D His stuff def. owns though and the Synchronized Tour is one of the best live gigs I've ever seen! (it had video footage synced to the live music!! :O)
That all is nothing compared to real music. \o/
What do you define as real music if Cornelius doesn't fit the description? o_O
(If you say Sufjan you a fag! :D)

*sigh*
Surely I'm not the only one who remembers scrolling down the comments on the "Timbaland rips" Youtube videos and having my will to live sapped away as the Timbaland defenders repeated the same dumb arguments over and over again - the dumbest one being that Tempest should be PROUD to get free exposure for his work?
It was depressing then, and now it's twice as depressing to see demosceners using exactly the same arguments now that the shoe is on the other foot. Yes, it's good that people have been introduced to Socrates's music as a result of this, but using the "free advertising" card as an excuse to do what the hell you want with other people's music is just laziness.
I'm not saying that copyright law is perfect, and I even believe that there are legitimate reasons to break it in the name of creativity. But if you do, then you should damn well be accountable for that choice, not just decide that copyright law is inconvenient for you and turn it into someone else's (read: compo organisers) problem instead.

hmm ok okkie... what about Joanna Newsom? Her new album is pretty stunning! Romantic, Baroque, music with jazz/gospel influences, thats a must listen at :)
gasman: the difference is crystal clear : timbaland is all about money, demoscene is not.
in my own ethics you can rip as much as you want as long you give credits and don't get money from it.

and if some money is involved then the added artistic work has to be quite obvious (like Girl Talk's mashups or Varia's outstanding remix)
knl: she sounds like Lisa Simpson but the album isn't all too bad. I heard her concerts are a real bore though, with ppl sitting on the floor.
"and don't release it"
you only forgot to mention this "don't release it"
There is a different between ripping and remixing or even "editing" as blamstrain underlined the fact it's an edit of the original only.
Ripping is BAD. Ripping is like clearly stealing everything without adding anything. Editing/Remixing (well, to remix, you in general have the stems) is completly different.
Seriously, this thread should now be about rabbits and pancakes because it's way out of its former topic. They should just credit the former composer and thats all.

btw, girl talks music is terrible, but his live performances are really fun, so it's kinda forgiven.
@okkie: oh fuck, are you trying to deviate to a "fuck you hippie?" I saw you coming from 100 MILES dude!
