Cool initiative, and I like the modulation - although the 1MB limit would have to be lifted to use it properly without the sampled loops - well you already know this.

And expect the truecolor picture quality to be improved by Scoopex shortly. ;)

Photon, the mod is actually quite small - it's mostly the size of the images that causes the memory requirement and that could have been improved in multiple ways. The runtime chip memory requirements are quite heavy due to the HAM part (around 200k) but by holding back on the graphics or doing them in vector form for instance the thing could run on an Amiga 1000 with 256k of chip memory, at least if you ditch the OS. There's a lot to be improved here; no design at all, the song and the modulation could be more innovative, the writer parts could be used to prepare for the coming parts (with the expense of chip mem consumption). I'm actually hoping this to be an inspiration for things to come - this is definitely just the beginning. Regarding the picture quality - sure, that's the easy part :P There are some way more interesting things the HAM mode can offer - unfortunately not seen here in this small production...

Seriously, I don't remember the last time I *HAD* to upgrade WinUAE. There should a scene competition/category for that: breaking emulators with obscure hardware hack!

I haven't checked out the other one, but Dunne Lul modifies some of the samples during playback (basically gradually distorting them more and more). That's not modulation at all.

It was a bit of a pain. Like all the other dA JoRMaS prods this one uses the TrackerPacker playroutine to play a normal ProTracker mod. What I did was to add some new PT commands for the player allowing me to switch the modulations on and off and to control the length of a loop of the modulating channel's data. That's pretty much trivial; the authoring part was nastier though. I wrote some code to generate modulating data (samples but interpreted as data by Paula), write the results to files and load them as samples in ProTracker. Then I used a small binary to switch the modulations on while running ProTracker to be able to hear the results while composing. Due to the nature of modulation reasonable results often require some experimentation and with this rudimentary process it was a bit tricky - and definitely not very creative. That's why the track is very simple and straight forward. I'm sure much more interesting results could be had by writing some appropriate (interactive?) tools, even for creation of the modulating data.

StarTrekker has an AM and an FM button and Audiosculpture may have these features as well, but I haven't given them a try.

LOL. You guys don't know how much you approved the Amiga is a successor to the Atari 8 bits. That "modulation" of PAULA is 100% what POKEY does. And, well it's all there... just 2 generations ahead, as Atari left to put their advances computers onto the market.
And, well, I remember, back in the Days, seeing the Amiga Ball bouncing in one Desktop layer, while I was writing letters...
This "new boing" shows better where the limits were...

Hi Kwe, the AM/FM routines in startrekker etc are different, they don’t modulate channels per se, they synthesize basic sounds on one channel that you render.

You know that's funny because the first SoundTrackers (at least up to DOC's SoundTracker VI) had support for frequencies & volumes modulations.
If i remember well it was removed by Obarski in his SoundTracker v1.8 (which was then hacked into DOC's SoundTracker IX).

I, personally, never heard any song that used that feature back then (that's probably why it was removed).
