i really wanted to thumb it down, because although i feel that it was made with the strong intention of being funny, it is actually not funny anymore. and probably never was.

however, i have to admit that it was also made with a deep understanding how the shit with voting on a huge party works. it may be a bit too hard-headed, but it worked (again). because nobody could make a really, i mean, really good demo (cocoon tried, but, uh).

so, well, i don't know why it takes too long to utter, but i hope this is the very last space pigs demo in pc demo compo. i mean, in pc demo compo, not in the wild or shortfilm.

piggie for now and i want to take my time (back).

@rp^frstl, i just didn't like that demo, i guess i shouldn't be sorry for that. Probably, i didn't get most of the jokes, but i think i understood the rest of them (not the inner ones), and even i didn't laugh, i have to admit that they were decent, professionally-made and well executed.

speaking of the demos i love (are you really interested in it?) i love most of cncd+flt and still demos, i used to love asd demos, and i love the latest holon's demos from the recent. i love tbl at most. i don't love senseless 3d flybys through the churches and factories, thus i don't love cocoon's.

the compo wasn't that strong as in the last year, so i can't say i loved something from there. maybe that's why sp04 came 1st. because it hasn't faced real competitor. i hope, at least.

I'm getting dejavu vibes from Breakpoint 2004 when Winnerdemo and Silkcut were their respective compo winners. My theory: TBL bribes German PC groups to make big joke demos.

But seriously (©™ pouet oneliner), I was entertained. Might not sit well with anyone related to the recent Boeing 737 MAX crash victims, though.

sq - of course you don't need to be sorry about not liking something. Tastes are different.

Talking about intentions: I'm absolutely sure that JCO etc probably have a shit-ton of fun making these. And that's that there mere cause for Kevin to exist. If they wanted to be sure about making the 1st at Revision Democompo, they'd probably aim for something entirely different.

Despite the adventures of Kevin lacking state-of-the-art effects, it brings something else and unique to the table. Which doesn't fall into the "let's make a demo in a week"-category.

There's a good amount of things to be learned from these. About timing, sound-design, choreography, not showing stuff and letting the brain fill in blanks.

And imho that deserves to win.

I don't remember when was the last time I laughed this hard.
Watched the earlier Spacepigs releases on my sofa, but this time I went to the party, and oh boy, is it a different experience! Had a nice spot in the second row, center. People left and right going crazy and laughing their asses off.

I literally cried from laughter (as in, soaked through two tissues) and I can still feel my sore throat that this demo gave me.

It's technically well done, with good pacing, clean voice overs, and audio... I may even have found small parts of it funny during the compo, but it is a bit like "How far can we string along this Kevin thing?"

We also didn't need scamp's "reply" to "comments on the internet" during prize giving if this (or the 64k entry) was the reason for it. :-/
I am sure it was funny while drunk at the party. Certainly stands out.

Maybe fun live then and there if your drunk, but i watched the stream sober and it didn't work for me. Very surprised to see a joke-prod get first place at Revision.
I don't want to give a thumbs down because i guess effort was put in to it and there is nothing wrong with it. It is what it is and does not try to be more. I am more surprised at the outcome of the compo.

So a piggie.

What Trauma Zero said.
reading some comments I get the idea that voting is no longer enough for the scene. what we need is voting the votes, let's call it metavoting. e.g. partymeister gives you one other random vote and you have to vote whether it's rightful and true. e.g. a five star vote can only be valid for a prod containing drum&bass, a one star vote must be invalid if the demo has a ton of particles. a cartoon demo may only be upvoted if its by cocoon (see takeover 2001). you also have to account for nationality. if any germans are involved, it can't be funny, so you somehow have to filter the votes using a threshold or sth.
for this to work, partymeister should provide a "because" feature while voting. in the form of "N stars" "because" "dropdown box with reasons".
the reasons should, in addition to the above examples, also contain some names of random popular sceners.
the resulting initial voting dataset including the because-data can then be metavoted in multiple passes until we end up with a satisfying, fair and objective prizegiving, distributing zero stars evenly thoughout all the groups. all amiga prods get a base rating of 4 stars though, because amiga.

It is good and hilarious.

During the compo I was quite diappointed that it turned out to be an invitation, but taken in isolation I actually think it's fine. The compo had way too many invitations back-to-back so that affected my feeling on this demo initially.

I'm glad that this entry won. It's genuinely entertaining, gets all the beats right, and has genuinely good production. It's not a "joke-prod", it's a comedy-prod.
rulez added on the 2019-04-23 11:43:29 by fizzer fizzer
I was sufficiently amused by it while mostly sober at the party.

What is a "joke prod" anyway? Just because this has comedy in it? What a weird and lowkey demeaning way to put that (now thinking about those "joke movies"...).

Gargaj's immediate criticism was that it was too obvious where this was headed, but I don't think that's even the main attraction of the demo. It's about the journey, not just reaching the destination. I would say though that Spacepigs needs to create some new IP finally too and not just milk the existing characters since they don't exactly have an immense amount of depth.

Other than that this was yet another step up and forwards in editing, camera work and sound design (and I guess it was technically more competent too). I hate that it's an invitation though.

I don't see what's wrong for a demo to be an invitation. I've seen lots of invitations that have entertained me.

It's obvious why everybody wants their party invitation to be shown at Revision: Addressable market size.

This is only a problem if invitations mostly consist of "party features" slides, especially if it's redundant information like "we have chairs to sit on, and demos". A good invitation demo should be able to stand on its own when it comes to content.

In this case the main story line of the demo was settled on being a parody on an invitation demo while at the same time being a non-invitation to an invitation-only party.

On a different meta layer, one could argue that there is no clear definition on what counts more on a demo - the visual quality? having written your own impressive 3d engine instead of using someone else's? the entertainment value? how good the storytelling was? Cocoon's release blew me away sitting in front of the big screen, and I would have not had any hard feelings if it had won. But is it better? Hard to say, they are great in very different kind of ways.

I don't drink and I thought it was funny during the party. It's an alternative kind of demo and I think the scene needs more alternative stuff, being a weird short like this or simply stuff without *untz untz*,
That said it's way overrated, it's a very effective kind of humor during the party, but not elsewhere, probably due to some psychological collective phenomena of spreading laughter.

Actually that's not fully accurate, although it was part of it. My main criticism was that while Hello Kevin was a fresh new exploration of social anxiety within the scene context, and Echo Chamber was a satire of how locked in we are as a scene - i.e. both prods presented an implicit well-intentioned criticism - this one seems to lack any of that and just plays into stale humour (Family Guy-level) and in the end turns out to be an invitation for a party which makes it little more than the things the previous installments tried to satirize, which is either ironic or cynical.

That's not to say it's not well-executed - it most certainly is - but at the same time it's aiming low and taking no risks, which in light of Hello Kevin is pretty disappointing.

Azzaro: Under what definition of "wild compo" would that be the case...? The most common definition, and the one used at Revision, is about the hardware platform. And "PC with AMD or NVidia graphics" is not really very wild.
added on the 2019-04-23 17:16:24 by scamp scamp
I also feel this could have been a better prod without the invitation attached to it. Dunno why, it just somehow feels like the mood was killed when the Kevin absurdity was replaced by the typical invitation facts (I'm not saying I don't like invitations!).
Still, the rest was 10/10, so:

I'm a little sad to see some of the criticism here, yet I'm going to add my pebble to it.

During the competition this prod made me laugh and I had a good time. That being said, I was quite surprised to see it rank first (although to be fair, there wasn't much competition this year).
I don't think this demo is bad in any way, but I don't see any depth in it. It seemed to have only one layer of reading, which is in stark contrast with the depth of the two previous episodes, and how thoughtful they felt.
I think the comment from Gargaj just above reflects a similar feeling.

That is fine though. Again, it was enjoyable, and it would be unfair to expect your very best each time. I'm just explaining why my vote is only a piggie.
added on the 2019-04-23 17:58:53 by Zavie Zavie
I do see your point. But as always, it is not that easy.

Part of Underground Conference and its invitations going back to 1995 was about giving a big fat fuck you to criticize the commercialization of the scene and infestations with gamers, which started with The Party, but to a certain extend also became a problem at Mekka&Symposium. The whole sponsorship thing then peaked at Breakpoint.

Obviously, gamers no longer are a problem these days, and the scene is no longer mainstream, and its also no longer attracting any big sponsors. That's a pity seen from a budget standpoint, but on the other hand removes a lot of conflict of interests.

One point remains, though: The part of trying to not offend anyone. It's a personal worry of mine that social justice warriors may enter the scene and damage it, just like it has happened with the german hacking scene - you had SJWs entering who weren't part of the scene, weren't hackers, and only joint so they could complain about feeling marginalized.

As we all know, Revision is much "cleaner" than what Breakpoint used to be. It is always to see it that way when you aren't the person who is liable, but the you-can't-submit-an-entry-without-a-gema-check-rule to me feels awkward. No longer being allowed to sit on chairs in front of the bigscreen for "fire safety reasons" makes my butt hurt quite as much as this 'logic' hurts by brain.

There are a couple of incidents that happened to me during Revision in the last couple of years that did worry me. A couple of years ago I had some person interrupt the job forum to complain about one of the slides containing a "fleshlight" picture, calling it sexist. And surprise, as it turned out, that person wasn't a scener, never had done any release at any party, but only had one mission: Trying to force her own matters of taste onto others.

I had a similar but worse WTF moment when last year I was told that Revision was nearly booted off Twitch due to what I had said while being on the stream. And since then I indeed have heard multiple discussions of "can we do this / show this entry" where I was wondering on why the fuck organizers find it more important to have their stream more compliant with US morality "standards" than to keep the freedom of mind that to me is a core pillar of the scene. And indeed, after returning from Revision I watched the Twitch-recording of the compos, which does include chat commentary, and voila, people actually made "oh my god, this guy said fuck on stage!!" comments there, which does make me wonder what swear words US gamers typically use when getting shot in counterstrike instead.

This demo did prove its point quite instantly already in multiple ways: Already during its creation, there had been discussions in the kind of "but elite-only is non-inclusive!!", and after it was shown in the compo it only took minutes to have a discussion on twitter where it was claimed that using the "UNHCR" logo as an illustration for the "5000m² camping grounds" and a compo called "ParalyMP3" would be offensive. And indeed, there even have been mentions of "Demos like this should be forbidden".

This has nothing to do directly with the demo, and this is only my personal view, where the Spacepigs guys probably have multiple different views on, but personally my position is this:

Words are just frequencies passing into your ears. Unless when played at too high volume, words should not be able to hurt. I absolutely hate the US approach where even the worst kind of crimes against humanity are OK, as long as you don't curse about it.

I am not going to have an online troll living in a country that starts and supports war after war leading to human suffering to tell me I am not allowed to make word play that involves a UN logo or a wheel chair. It's obvious that making jokes about sceners having a hard time trying to survive in an outdoor camp isn't making fun about refugees, it's about making fun of us nerds. It's also obvious that the "ParalyMP3" competition isn't making fun about disabled people, it's making fun on demoscene music compos. The only way to be offended by these things is if you had the GOAL of being offended in the first place.

But anyway: I do understand that to most people, words can be hurtful, and indeed I do try my best not to hurt people in weak positions. People who know me will agree that I typically attack the strong, not the weak. But as is the case with SJWs, they typically aren't actually trying to protect anyone anyway, just as "pro-lifers" actually don't give a fuck about life, they should wish to force their own hypocritical standards upon others, and that's something I seriously dislike.

Which is why I called ryg / farbrausch a "fat black jewish lesbian girl" during the prizegiving. Not because he told others discussing this entry that I am an asshole on twitter (which is fine for me), but because he'd decided to actually encourage some shitty SJW to be in the position to judge on this.

Wait, so for some it's too much story and too little tunnels, for others it's not enough criticism of the first ones' mindset? I'm confused now. Here's my two reasons for thinking this deserved 1st.

a) It excelled at making me laugh.
b) The competition was good, but none other excelled at anything specifically.

I don't mind the invitation tacked on to the end. It's the first big party of the year, not being spammed with invites would actually be a cause of concern for me. And I'd always pick an entertaining invite over a boring one.

You have to understand that this invitation directly ties into the narrative of UC9. We had to have an airplane that crashes because this premise is the starting point for the demo party. There are only so many things you can do with these overall constraints while still keeping a concept that works for scamp and us. I think your point is absolutely valid by itself but it's still hard to square a circle.

I'm personally pretty pleased with how this project went because the things I set out to do (file sys monitoring + resource hot reloading, WYSIWYG integration with Visual Studio, inclusion of C# as 2nd scripting language to deal with our lua perf problems, debugging support for in-project C# scripts) went great. There's much more I could say about this but I'll spare you the details. I'm very curious what we can come up with next in a more traditional pre-party setup. Chances are it will involve more risk again.

I tried to bring myself to watch this twice but I could not bother. I maybe be a spoilsport and a very serious minded person, but this just did not work for me at all. It's great work, all in all, and it kind of ticks many of the boxes that a "fun" demo would do, but in all its self-referential glory it fails to deliver any sort of punch. The levels of meta in this, as also discussed in these comments, was just too much for me.

When watching this, I was kind of hoping that I were watching fractals with pounding techno music instead. And I don't really like fractals with pounding techno music all that much.

time to add some random personal thoughts i wanna share.

since demoscene is one of my few remaining hobbies, i tend to focus strongly on whatever grabs my interest within the short amount of time i manage to invest for a release. usually two weeks before the party during which i lock myself inside the studio and do nothing else. a passion crunch, so to say.

last year i focussed more on a bit of tech, i added the volume light tracer and realtime reflection to our engine. this year, due to the tool upgrades (see paralax comment), i wanted to focus strongly on direction/camera/animation again. being able to control 1000s of nodes explicitly within a live coding environment is a luxury i can get with making a demo. making something similar with a 3d tool, like cinema4d or sth, would have been tedious and boring. if you check out the exe instead of youtube, skip around a bit, pause it, change playback speed and you'll get the idea.

i have always been interested in "classical" direction, and with the spacepigs toolchain i found the most efficient way to continue on the path i started years back with video production.

about the point of this release being less mysterious and more traditional cartoon slapstick: i'd love it reaching a level where my stuff becomes comparable to the simpsons, actually :) nothing bad about learning the basics of an artform before adding your personal flavor to it. similar with code: maybe learn the basics of constructing a scene graph and implementing common datastructures before becoming super ambitious and reinventing the wheel everywhere. but thats just my approach.

i also like "story demos" because they give me a shitton of stuff to play around with sound design and music. much more interesting than the genre many other demos usally fit best in: music videos.

i'm very happy that we came up with an entertaining product that made some people laugh, and that we managed to finish it after the crunch of a lifetime. i was expecting 5th place or something during the prizegiving, imagine my surprise :)

some notes about some other comments here:
this is the second kevin demo. just the second. we introduced "nosegirl" as a new character, and the "kaiser" became a lot more 3dimensional ;)
this is the first time i tried to have characters interact in a somewhat logical and consistent manner.
sorry about the "rushed" greetings part, we forgot some group names there.

missed this during the compo as was all over the place after the Amiga demo compo. re-watched at home yesterday and it made me chuckle in a few places.

I am so utterly confused at people saying it's not a demo. surely a demo is an executable program which runs a none interactive and audio / visual experience? and that IS what this IS! whatever the "content" might be, it still fits that description.

anyways, while I didn't find it as funny as the original Kevin demo by a long shot, I cannot fault the obvious time and effort which has gone into this. sound design and music alone is worth a thumb! having to make that many small tunes in all those different styles is a huge ask on anyone.

I think H0ffman just put it right. As long as it fits the compo rules and as long as speak about an entertaining executable here, it´s a demo.

One cannot argue about content of art - as well as one cannot argue about taste.

Even if we tried to - where do we want to pull the line then?
Joke entries in graphics compos disqualified?

Music that maybe is aiming to get the audience into good vibes by using ancient sample sets etc / meant in a jokingly way into a separate competition?

That would just make a thing (=demoscening / party entries) in which I invest lots of my sparetime much more complicated - but I love it, as it ISN´T that complicated. Life´s complicated enough. Scene is joy. Amen. (without break)

:-D Kevin goes from strength to strength (or tooth to tooth depending how you look at it ;D), the narrative points out some not so good layers of society and human behaviour in both subtle and blunt ways, and satirises them in a farcical way which for me works well and did makes me laugh, I can respect the amount of effort involved too. Congrats!

First place or not; I watched this for all its six minutes (plus a bit) and was bored out of my mind. It's not that the jokes are tasteless; I just don't find them funny, and the pacing doesn't work for me at all.

I absolutely love the sound in this! Running the demo a second time was more about re-listening than re-watching for me.

I laughed and smiled during the demo even though I was sober, so thanks for that as well. :) But the invitation part of it felt weird and mood-breaking.

That it actually won feels a bit... strange, which is probably unfair. But then the competition this year wasn't the best, and it is refreshingly different from the rest, so: Congrats! :)

I'm a sucker for well executed comedy and this is hella well executed and some of the stuff is really funny! End is a bit dragging, but gets UC9 point across. Loved the Turbo Analisis diss, they'll get back at cha!

Weirdest complaint is people saying this needs to be in the wild or animation compo for some reason. It's not like story driven demos are anything new in the demoscene

nah. first Kevin's show I watched in 2017 was moderate, but not my sense of humour. I respect some sense of continuation and consequence, but I'm little bit surprised that it has won seeing other demos. Probably as somebody else commented above, watching it on the big screen, drunk - made it more successful than watching at home.

Anything goes with demos as long as it's an executable that renders stuff in real-time, regardless of content. Still, my underbelly does have some sympathy for the viewpoint that prods like this seem more at home in an animation compo; it simply doesn't offer the kind of stuff I'm looking for in demos.

Nevertheless, the direction & storytelliing are superb and the jokes work very well for me - and I have a pretty difficult sense of humour. So a solid thumb up :)
rulez added on the 2019-04-24 23:48:08 by Alpha C Alpha C
AlphaC, tnx, nice to hear this from you.

I probably have a bit of understanding for the butthurt people whose scene we're killing by not being as conservative about the "what a demo is supposed to contain". but just a very little bit. others could copy some of the things we do well, implement it with a flavor they like, and fucking compete with us instead of whining afterwards. go read some books about camera, light, direction, color, sound design, and try yourself at those things. farbrausch did, mercury did, and a few other pc groups.

We couldn't have released this as a video in an anim compo because unlike many other demos it relies much on randomization (will be different every time you watch) and it does have an interactive part.

Since people keep voting for our prods, maybe the idiots who want to limit their demo compos to some particular aesthetics should organize their own demoparty with a "only boring drumnbass music videos and/or particle system showcases allowed" pc demo competition.

what do you expect from a pc demo nowadays? bleeding edge cgi stuff? go play the latest aaa games.

counterthumbing the "keep this shit away from the demoscene" asshole. keep shitty comments like that to youtube please, you know, the place where you watch demos, motherfucker.
rulez added on the 2019-04-25 10:08:06 by jco jco
@scamp - I feel somehow uncomfortable with this one being the peak of pc demoscene achievement in 2019. It just belongs to different category - wild/crazy/humorous/stand-up-comedy-demo etc.

Being shown there, no matters what hardware it runs on, makes things clear.
added on the 2019-04-25 10:42:04 by AzzaroMWI AzzaroMWI
AzzaroMWI: with all due respect: it does not and that's why it was shown right where it was. The compo rules are absolutely clear on that and there was not one tiny shred of controversy for compo main orga chaos^farbrausch.

Story demos are nothing new in the scene (see Okkie's comment) and if we could convince a hall of over a thousand sceners that our stick man with bad teeth has more entertainment value than the rest of the compo than this is just the way it is ;) You can believe me that there was quite some effort involved behind the scenes to making this happen. There are more facets to a prod than just graphics. I might finally write those up to make that clear.

Closing: why don't you submit your PC demo next time instead of trying to sabotage the demo compo rules? Reconvince the scene with deeds instead of cheap shots. I have to admit: I'm still a fan of Mawi.

I loved it ! It was fun and creative. Other demos were also great but this one was different in a good way!
I believe that is the reason why people voted for it. I don't get the drama around it neither why some say it doesn't fit into the PC demo category. If a demo is only supposed to be a succession of ultra complex, high level nerdy graphic scenes , then many will be discouraged creating their first demo and at some point we will end up seeing only the same kind of thing...I don't think a demo should be only about showing off technical skills (we have other categories for that , like 4k for example).

I saw it sober at home and it's nicely done, you can't take it from this one.
Having it winning whole demo compo makes me sad, and I guess it made some people here thumbing it down, but IMO it's not the authors fault, you guys did great indeed!

^ exactly this.

i felt like there were 1 or 2 better entries than this, but the buzz of the party was reflected in the results and to be fair, this SP demo was definitely far more approachable than the previous ones featuring Kevin. a job well done, even though i kinda wanted to see [INSERT-OTHER-DEMO'S-NAME] win.

and to all the naysayers: you make the content and you do the voting. up the ante next year (who am i to speak, though..) and beat the next SP demo at Revision2020 so this won't be an issue for you any more ;)

r1g8 there is a ton of realtime controlled animation, unlike boring scene players which use deterministic tweening, we have iir filters all over the place. check out the micro movements of the security dude in the airport scene, for example. use the demo exe, press "pause". all the realtime stuff keeps running.

Wow ...For some reason I watched this demo again (I saw it first at Revision and instantly voted for it .).. And of course this time I read the comments here again. I can see so much negativity and almost hate for this demo. Reading some comments really feels weird and it is the first time I get such feeling on pouet.net.

I am sorry if my text is complicated. What I mean is I begin to understand why some people seem angry about this demo being the winner.
They might believe it has been rated by pigs or even worst "gamers" anyway people not able to appreciate "real demo art" , idiots unable to understand the complexity of making the effects they saw in the cocoon demo or the adapt's or whatever ..Sorry I forgot what I saw because I found it quite dull this year to be honest.
I don't agree with it.
Some other might think they abused the "Kevin thing" (Yeah it might not work anymore.)
Fuck ..You know what I am just tired...This demo was great ! It made me laugh and it was different than the others (in a good way)... A deserved winner in many ways in the demo compo, really liked the direction and story telling, and making such high quality real time comedy short movie is a great achievement in itself. And I seriously like how Kevin character has evolved throughout the years.

But, as effect lover I would really like to see what kind of "real" demo you guys can bump up with! So maybe some day Kevin will make a real demo :)

That happened a lot in shitty 70s grind house movies cause when wanted a big name on the poster but couldn't afford the a-lister for more than one shooting day. In the worst case the scenes with the a-lister were shot independently and cut together to look like they interacted with the rest of the cast. Planet Terror homages this with Bruce Willis.

I was 101% sober at the party and enjoyed this demo 1010% during the compo, one might ofc say that two days in a row party coding matches being extremely drunk, but still sober! This comeback of Kevin demo really made me laugh and contained super sophisticated scene humor, a well deserved winner in many ways

The more technical effect driven demos, like ours, could have competed with this one at Revision - but the lack of direction and design in most hi-tech demos sucked that out from the scope of possible end results.
