kickass demo as usual, with clever reuse of the old effects :)
the only weak point is the music.
tcg did it better.
rulez added on the 2003-04-22 10:17:27 by teo teo
ehm, reuse? i guess the 3dengine was 'reused', however this wasnt running in 5 fps as in little nell, so iam impressed ;-)

and the zoomer, it has panorama jox to, perfect circle didnt, and so on..

great demo, together with the farbrausch demo the best prod. at breakpoint for sure.

Really nice atmosphere, nice effects etc. The first time I didn't really like the music, the second time I saw it I did. Don't know why, but the "cheesy" synth really adds to the feeling. The flow was a bit weird, but I don't if it was good or bad. The mermaid was really cool, the logos could have been better or ditched altogether. And the ending, it was really cool.

Some really nice bits, but a bit more disjointed than the Madwizards release was.

I also couldn't escape the notion that tbl has reached one of those ceilings again. It's getting harder and harder to improve on their trusty amiga.

very nice ideas, very nice modelling, very nice designs, very nice everything.

except for the fact that it was totally put to waste on that rusty old amiga.

Also worth mentioning is Louies price cermony speech, thumbs up Louie.

ahahaha superb! (well except the music yes..) but I don't want to complain. the most sexy scene was the one on the screenshot. =) and the endless zoom was very nice, too and a little bit improved I guess. so thumbs up for tbl who just can't fail.

Really nice elements (art + modelling) but rather incoherent looking with its jumping around between scenes. If there was a common thread or convergence, I didn't see it during the compo. (By comparaison little nell conveyed some sort of "journey" kind of feeling)

- we haven't got the time to make a proper demo, let's throw in some scenes we have lying around, add our 'copyright' infinite zoom and enjoy fame and fortune for another year!
- yeah, let's do so!

okay, seriously, that's an okay demo, but it's just really disjointed, and the music is more like really just a 'theme' repeated over and over.

"Also worth mentioning is Louies price cermony speech, thumbs up Louie."
yeah, it's certainly worth mentioning. with a virtual thumbs down from me, though. 8}

I have a question: To all of you who dislike the music, what do you think is bad about it? You don't like ebm? Do you think it has to sudden "part" changes in it? Or is it because I just suck as a musician?
They didn't use tcg this year because they went 4chn with this demo.

/steffo
added on the 2003-04-23 09:30:00 by steffo steffo
stefan, for me personally it's more like those parts are short and the track doesn't progress, it feels like it's stumbling upon itself
added on the 2003-04-23 11:21:32 by bhead bhead
steffo:
if ebm shouls sound like cheap, mid 90s rave, then yes i don't like it.
i have quite other opinion about decent electronic music.

and it didn't fitted to the intromusic (which was quite okajish, compared to the maintune).

the breaks could have been more fluid aswell, not changing the theme each time.
the music in the 'parking lot' scene was especially crappy.

but probably matter of taste...
added on the 2003-04-23 14:08:07 by teo teo
Ok :) The style is ofcourse a matter of taste. The suden changes and so on I don't even take responsibility for, so those opinions doesn't hurt my feelings :)

tbl obviously tries to be better than themselves.
for me this doesn't really work out because of too much discontinuity.
the first part looks too much like a general "we can enable transparency"-pc-demo.
still, some nice scenes included, but suffering alot from 8bit colour quantization.

after all a nice demo, and louie is still the king of zoomers.
rulez added on the 2003-04-23 18:46:24 by hfr hfr
plek: I'm really sad to see you feel that way. Demoscene isn't just PC and it's great to see some people still pushing the limits of other platforms.

The demo is good, but I didn't like it as much as their previous demos. Mainly because the music had many pauses and so. Visually stunning, though.
rulez added on the 2003-04-23 20:12:09 by dairos dairos
Astounding... was really cool to see it on the big screen after Friday night when I was worried I was bothering them trying to sleep next to the coding... but that seemed to work out after all. Just a great fscking production...

(The fact that Plek doens't like it makes it better, you know.)
sir garbagetruck: not to worry, those Germans who subconsciously believe (or maybe is it just their humour?) that yelling "FICKÖNNN!" through their loudspeaker setup at maximum volume really is a good idea are way more annoying ;)

dubmood: The 12MB datafile is mainly due to the zoomer (3MB) and the bones-animations (approx. 3MB) taking a lot of diskspace. We didn't have the time to properly trim down their size.

The code and the visuals for the intro sequence was put together entirely during an 8-hour run on the morning of the demo deadline...

... and people, don't blame Steffo for discontinuities in the music. When developing the demo, the visuals dictated the music, not the other way around. (We drove Steffo half insane with our constant change requests, it took nearly 40 iterations before the tune reached its final version...)

Personally, I'm quite happy with the demo. It seems to me a bit more polished than our previous demos. My main gripe is (as seems to be the case for many other people here) with the flow. 3 minutes main part with two logo breaks in-between will inevitably make the demo (and especially the music) feel quite chopped up.

O, and this is the first year that we actually have proper Z-clipping in our 3d engine. Now that's about bloody time :P
added on the 2003-04-23 23:02:48 by Kalms Kalms
Very well done Rubber, Kalms and the rest! I definitly like this even more than the previous two ones. Faster 3d, animated models, better zoomer, better sync, and BETTER MUSIC. Well done Steffo!

Good to see TBL back year after year, although it would be nice if someone could beat them in the demo compo. :)

The first part is refreshing and very atmospheric. The rest, while the effects are good for Amiga 68xxx, seem like rehashes of old TBL parts. The infinite zoom, while slightly improved, has been done over and over, and the mermaid looks like they smooshed the fish/whale from Perfect Circle together with the girl from Little Nell. The music keeps stopping after each part too, what's that about? I preferred the music from TCG.

So, I'm going to have to pigface this, after thumbing up the last two from TBL. Maybe something a little more like Rain next time would be good. :)

i missed the amiga demo compo, people told me afterwards that it was the total kickass demo. lucky me, i was able to see it during the price giving but honestly, i wasn't very impressed. it's a pretty good demo tho but nothing too special from tbl. i think especially the water part lacks in comparison with the one from captured dreams. and maybe i've been absent from the amigascene for too long but those hard edged 3d models and clumsy animations definitely break up the entire atmosphere for me. the demo definitely deserved winning and surely was a big bunch of work. but seeing this as a demo without all that platform related fuzz, it's a rather boring one for me.

Good music, some nice 3d scenes, but there seems a total lack of consistency or direction, and no real hard hitting effects.

rulez added on the 2003-04-29 21:19:36 by jazzman jazzman
That is a major complain about TBL. Little Nell and Magia looked like Perfect Circle only with different 3D Models. Whilst Little Nell improved upon Perfect Circle, Magia is not really better than Little Nell. And we now have the Roto Zoomer since CAPTURED DREAMS (!) C'mon guys, you can be more innovative! Next demo must be a killer, another Little Nell / Magia Clone won't work this time, I'm afraid..

dairos/raven: both of you don't seem very realistic on this. your narrow-minded attitude might be inherent to the demoscene, but it just doesn't make that much sense. (on the other hand, why am i defending this point in front of a few demosceners..). you'll find out about it some day.

Hmm...difficult to judge. Demo divided into 2 parts, from which i like the first part most. TBL use the proven concept for winning a demo competition. Ofcourse the visuals, the code and the music is still great but my enthusiasm for TBL somehow diminished after RAIN, when they started doing 3D demos (which i don't like in general).
Still, i do like it, more so than Little Nell. Great to see Destop and Blaizer back after a long time!

But please next time, a demo in the style of Rain :)
Oh and it lacked flow and a general theme, it was more like 10 scenes pasted together.

And i did like the music from Steffo ;)

maybe I'm becoming spoiled when it comes to tbl demos, but I was quite disappointed by this one. Although the effects are as good as usual, magia doesn't seem to have that sense of overall design and good feeling. Atleast it didn't provide any magic for me. I loved the destop logos by the way.

Sadly it did not work on my Amiga as again my miggy doesen't have enough ram inside. But the avi version really kicked arse! Okay, again we have here a real typical piece of black lotus art and it gets a bit boring with the time as new ideas are missing. But else I still enjoyed to watch it pretty much - especially the end was fantastic! Don't stop going on that road guys ,and implement some new ideas & effects next time - then really nothing could get wrong!!

You've shown pretty many people what a fucking outdated chipset still can offer nowadays!! You see, not only the hardware counts when it comes to demos - it is more the other way round.

Music kinda sucks here but visually this is top-notch, lovely animations.

Massive visuals, but the music is somehow strange.. can't put the finger on what disturbs me but well. Anyways, it's definitely worth a thumb!

nice
inconsistent scenes though
I think the music was the best part of the demo. Too bad it was way too short

Had some nice visual effects and scenes, but overall rather shoddily put together imo. Music didn't work for me at all.
