Evolution of Vision meets Rupture. Video2Particles! How nice all mixed together! Thumb!

awesome awesome awesome graphics. the ebm track would have been just as awesome if... well... if you got a decent singer that can handle singing this low, or if you had transposed the track up a bit. but still, a breathtaking demo!

Awesome! Vocals fit perfectly.

now, this was way cool! there is, though, the usual issue :) though on the stream it is hard to really judge. I liked the music much better than usually, and such vocals are perfectly fine in this type of music, but, *these* vocals were just plain bad imho...
rulez added on the 2011-08-06 21:51:09 by blala blala
music was not to my taste (again :)), lots of stuff seen before in other ASD demos, but it was all put together in a really awesome way!

superb use of natal, image processing reminded me of "The evolution of vision", unfortunately this time the music is completely not my cup of tea :(. After watching this and fairlight intro, it just got to my head, that I slept through 2 years of what was developed on PC. Got to change this. Good luck on the compo. This time I have no favourite - both are great!

Amazing demo, awesome style. Really, really amazing demo. But those vocals… Argh. It totally killed the demo for me. But the direction, the visuals and the content were all top quality as usual.

Still in deep awe.

The downsides: Too long. And the music.

Visuals are great, the music would be ok without the vocals, now it's just pure crap. The composer tries way too much, just like with Butterfly Effect.

And hey, Navis, I think you have proven your point to Smash now. Although it's pretty pointless since Smash has already gone to next level.
Great style makes great demos!

too much recycling, music is really bad, use melodye for your vocals :)

Good, of course, vocals would have been good if they had borrowed more from Kraftwerk, namely mechanical sound.

thumb for stunning visuals. love the "empty" beginning and the slow buildup. the music feels a bit disconnected from the visuals (i felt like i was watching the demo muted with another song playing in the background) and the song is not really my cup.

Visually it strikes me as a mix between the music video for "A-ha - Take On Me" and "Tron". I like it, even though it drags on for a bit. The music is really what kills it though. It's not just the fact that they are plain bad (sorry), but even more that they are absolutely misplaced in the mix -- they feel as if they were plastered on top with a rubber band. Completely sticks it's head out in the mix, adding to the "slapped on"-feeling. Still, it's obviously a good demo, it just could have been way better with minimal effort in the music department.

thanks for this great demo, rulling and this is first demo played on my brand new pc, such a honour to see this piece of art; loving from music to colurs to morphs (producing unique visual experience) to compossition and narration and the idea behind is up to you to find

Fantastic demo - really love the visuals and direction! The music will again draw a lot of controversy, but I think it drove the demo forward nicely, so mission accomplished.

And, again, what's really impressive: this demo runs without the slightest hitch on "normal" contemporary hardware, even on the hghest resolution. Kudos for that.

The music is awful, the direction is lacking most of the time, turns into an object show, i really like the part displayed in the screenshot + the rhino walking through the walls synced with the music.

I liked some of the scenes, especially the closeup on the running man and the boat sailing in front of that moon, sun, planet, whatever. The rest was rather boring, especially those transitions between vehicles again... But the really unbelivably terrible thing about this demo is the fucking singing. OMFG that was BAD. Please stop amature singing in demos.... really.... it sucks ass.

Awesome visuals and direction.

The music itself I think is quite good, but the vocals were shockingly bad. It reminded me of Jan Terri and I couldn't stop laughing.

I used to love amusic's epic demo soundtracks, but this recent obsession with vocals is making his work sound amateur. Sorry to join the critics, but it's meant to be constructive.

Here's a protip for ASD: try some other musician for your next project. You have nailed the visual stuff, now you need to get someone as talented to provide the aural experience.
Fresh and enjoyable...

Some previous great efects from ASD demos neatly glued together, melting in very pleasure eyecandy. Vocals was ok, at least not that bad as was in butterfly effect.

After all another enjoyable demo from ASD. (and not kitschy)

Solid prod, music is not my cup of taste ( EBM is in general not my fav. ) Nice particles, but now its really enough of particle demos please !

Also i think its time to take care about the recycling overkill, the eagle was in i dont know how much prods ... also the bridge and roomscene was known before ... The crash of rhino into the walls was a quick "same as rupture" effect ...

For sure a thumb up, for the work and enthusiasm to invest time in demoscene

Some of the most compelling visuals i have seen in a demo - big props for that and the mind boggeling effort! - however, while i can appreciate the poetry of the vocals (esp the climax) they are really not executed well.
rulez added on the 2011-08-07 01:11:59 by Trenox Trenox
The hall audio is awful, but what I heard of the track, I liked it. I love the vocals on this one, nice 80's industrial feel, reminds me of front 242 etc. etc...

Visuals 'foors rock too here, the screenshot part especially quite big applause. Only problem I have here is that this again feels a bit rehahshed, like a mix of everything ASD has been making since Rupture.

But overall a very good prod again.

for sure not a killer.
and hate me but:
im sick of asd´s object and effect recycling.
sure, you arrange it in another way and stuff and yaddayadda. but i come to point where im close to say: asd? yeah, when you know 1 demo - you know all of them.

and the music sucked.
now start bitchslapping me...and please dont forget the "if you dont like it do it better" phrases.

Iam getting sick a bit about all those "Piggy" voters, since i think .. YES we all complain a bit, yes there is some recyling of models and effects ...

BUT HEY didnt you saw on which niveau those things are done ? If complain, because there are such masterpieces from ASD, and so good effects and tons of "postprocessings" in there ! But what is really annoying, that you always get messured on your best prod ever done, the flawless production you did maybe once in life ...

I think before voting such a demo as piggy you should really do such a piece yourself, and compare it to other productions you votes as "rocks" before ..

There are points you might not like, but look the overall quality ... and be honest and fair .. its way above average release standarts !

On creators side i would ask myself why people are getting so strict with your prods ... MAYBE its because of the "strict" critics you post / talk and give to them ?

h20: i don't think we're particularly strict with criticism of other people's work on pouet. I give one thumb down for every 20 thumb up and rules and generally try to be positive. I will comment heavily on the work of people I know personally too. Being strict with our prods is something I don't mind. Some times it helps.

added on the 2011-08-07 02:58:55 by xyz xyz
h2o: I don't think artists take any notice of criticism that isn't constructive. Purely negative comments are often people expressing their personal taste, and there's very little an artist can do about that. If everyone shared the same taste there would be no reason for art.

The visuals are stunning, the execution is again exemplary. I don't mind putting used things together in a new way (and in think you guys are one of the few who manage to create a new look and unique look for your works almost every time), so i really enjoyed the ride and hope that there will be more of your productions in the future. With the rest, i am afraid i have to agree with gloom and Wade. I have the feeling that when you remove all the effects from the vocals, you get a singer that is none and i personally find that a bad start for using vocals. Please amusic, return to your earlier versatility. I was and i still am amazed by your earlier soundtracks and long for another one like that for some time now :)
And, before i forget. Cool fullscreen gfx in the next demo pls, i am missing that a lot too, lately.

If it had better soundtrack and was two minutes shorter it might be the best demo in a long time. Actually, that sentiment goes for most ASD productions. They drag on too long and the music is tasteless. Other than that, great job :)

Lovely visuals and lovely music. I couldn't imagine this with any other kind of music (or any other kind of vocals for the music, for that matter). I think this will eventually replace Dreamchild as my favourite ASD demo but time will tell. It also made me want to rewatch Chariots of Fire, which is never a bad thing.

(and it's also now the best demoscene production featuring a running rhino. This one will be hard to beat...)

Way more solid than ASD's previous asm entries. Really beautiful visuals in places, but... It was almost totally ruined on the big screen by the rather poorly mastered soundtrack. Everything just went all porridgly, and the vocals sounded horrendous. After viewing it again with a non-PA sound system (e.g. my tv's speakers) the soundtrack wasn't all that bad, but the vocals were still somewhat cringeworthy.

Still, this is by far my favorite ASD Assembly demo ever.

h2o: when i critisize i hope that the citisized creator gets another perspective...
ASD would even bring highlevel creations in a fastdemo compo.
And iam for sure a big fan of them, but that doesnt meant that i have to stick myself into someones butt.

I would even go to Mercedes-Benz telling them that i hate their A-Class Modell...even when i know that that Car is still far better than any others. But i know that Mercedes Benz aswell as ASD can do better.

When entering a competition - you want to entertain the crowd. The ones who cant code too...so the "dont complain - do it better" is such an uberelite thing which is totally outdated.

When we come to that point - then are only the members of a handfull groups allowed to express their meanings.

critics are mostly subjective but always a good way to improve.

I´d hate beeing surrounded by Yes-Sayers, Buttcrawlers and namevoters.

Just re-watched it, just to hear the soundtrack again. I must say the vocals are by far my favorite part of it, still digging that industrial feel. Otherwise the track isn't that amazing. Especially the drums sound really cheap. But overall it's still enjoyable, and I'm always happy to hear something new in a demo, or at least something that doesn't get heard so often.

Ahh.. there we go again... ok...

Let me start by saying that I've got nothing to prove to anyone. I could sit with Leviathan and write another 8 minute guitar epic (which even if untraditional for demos, is quite traditional for ASD). But every now and then I feel like venturing and experimenting in uncharted territories, like the butterfly effect tune, the midnight run one, the chameleon tune or like this one. I've never written EBM before in my life, and I'm not either very into EBM. However I was listening to Covenant (namely Call the ships to port) and really dug it, so I thought.. what the hell.. let's try EBM. Is the end result good? I have no idea really. I'm no EBM expert, so I'll let the EBM experts judge that. Is my voice good? Of course it's not.. I'm no singer and I really laughed my ass off when I put what I sung through melodyne and realized how off I was getting at times. But I liked the grit that got out on the low frequencies and the dark disturbing sound, and so did Navis and amoivikos.

In the end I had tons of fun making this, especially while seeing it with the visuals and how Navis was moving things around and syncing them. I believe that the track gives a very special flow and movement to the demo.

As such, I'm sorry to disappoint some of you but we'll keep having lyrics and vocals or guitars or the sound of stones rubbed together for that matter if we feel like doing so, and we are most certainly not changing musicians.

rasmus: spot on! Covenant style is what I went for =)

Calexico: The Kraftwerk vibes are due to heavy use of melodyne, especially when I got rid of the pitch drift and modulation. It wasn't what I aimed for, but I too found the end result Kraftwerk-ish, and I liked it. As for Yello.. I hadn't thought that.. but.. sure! I love Yello!

Maali: spot on as well! Especially when I put the "I am spinning" part on loop I thought.. "Holy Underworld.. I'm keeping this!".

That's complete and utter nonsense. While there sure is a lot of work in this demo I still can bring myself to thumbing it up because it kinda bored me after a while and I'm sure I won't watch it often. That however doesn't mean that I'm not allowed to thumb up much "simpler" demos, after all it's a matter of taste what one likes or not!

aMusic: You say you have nothing to prove, but hey, here you are all defensive about what you do. So, I guess you do care.

And about your music. If you don't know how to make something, maybe you should keep on training (in private) until you are good at. You know, if you are bad at singing or making EBM, it's not like everyone needs to hear your first efforts. Although, after reading your comment it seems that you almost made the music jokingly. If that's what you aimed at, then you did succeed, because I laughed my ass off at the tune. Don't know how well that suits the ASD idea of good demo..
trivialfursuit: I often wish I was sixteen again, carefree and with lots of energy and time on my hands to write 60 tracks per year. Alas, I'm twice as much, and now a couple of tracks per year is all I'm finding time for. Thankfully, hardware vendors have equipped their gear with volume knobs and switches, so you can mute the sound and watch the demo with the nyan cat theme on your iPod (and I know I'm tempting Maali to actually go ahead and do this =P). I'm glad though that the track appealed to your sense of humor.

Well, the thing is that I really think your demo is visually the most striking thing I've seen in a long, long time. And I've been watching demos since the early days on Amiga. Considering this it was a really disappointing that the music was not nearly as good. It also surprises me that people who are able to make such a strong effort visually basically everytime they make a product fail to put as much though into the music. Anyway, sorry for being so direct and probably harsh, too. I overreacted. And I really appreciate your work, it's really great.

The visuals were ace, and the direction was mostly fine (maybe too hectic sometimes), but the vocals were sitting in a strange midway of robotic and natural. As far as I know EBM lyrics aren't usually autotuned that much, so they didn't fit in too well. Maybe some distortion/bitcrusher would have brought the needed grit to make the vocals less comical.

I also enjoyed the sailing ship.

With a bit of work I think this soundtrack could be really great! The main problem for me with it was the calmest part of the vocals. They where... horrible... Kinda sounds like a robot that has learned english from a german teacher.

The parts with more layers of vocals works better and I actually liked it a bit there :) So it's not all bad this tune. So I am hoping for a final version :) Anyway. a HUGE step up from butterfly effect when it comes to using vocals. So keep up the work aMusic!

Really liked it. The soundtrack is ok, but for once I actually have to join the ones complaining about the mastering - I think the vocals drowned in the rest, and overall the mix was kind of muddled.

I would also label this "futurepop" rather than EBM, as it has more in common with Covenant and VNV Nation than with DAF or Wumpscut.

About the singing: It's not good, but few futurepop acts have good singers, so that's nothing out of the ordinary. :-P The two I already mentioned are the exceptions I can think of.

Hi all,

First of all thanks for all the comments, positive and negative; and thanks for all the votes too!

"Spin" started as an experimental demo, back in January 2011. The purpose was:

1) To make a demo with peculiar rendering (particles or lines or something else) that would embrace the nothingness of the background.
2) To make a demo that is one camera take.
3) To use, somehow, the Kinect depth camera.
4) To finish the whole thing in less than 2 weeks.
5) To go to Assembly or Evoke with it and aim for top-3.

I started and finished with the visuals in early April (working on it alongside Butterfly effect). The demo was augmented with that particle explosion effect, which worked quite well with the lines. The original name that I gave it was "The evolution of human locomotion", but when Amusic wrote the soundtrack we stuck with "Spin", which is more suitable. Do read the lyrics to find out what it is about, then check how they match with the visuals. "Through the door" - "Colourful nightmares" - "spinning in a shell"; I don't recall another demo that words *mean* something.

I will talk about technology in another post, but for now I say: wow! how bizarre that the 20th Assembly demo compo is won by a glitchy demo! when did that happen before? Starstruck maybe? Yet, Starstruck has large sections with normal rendering. Spin was a big gamble because nobody knew how well it would go with the crowd: yellow lines against black background? winning the compo?! yeah that'll be the day. The day has come, we're evolving!!

I love it \o/

Navis: No, but your comments and attitude towards making demos (not to mention how you perceive your group and yourself) makes lot of people cringe. No matter, it's all very amusing :)
I don't know what I say that makes people cringe, can you elaborate please?

Maybe some of it is a bit arrogant? Maybe sometimes it sounds like you think you know better and are in the position to say how to make things the right way? Maybe you're competitive to the point of being ridiculous? Maybe you try too much (ie. like everytime you try to include meaning in your demos, or how about the lyrics). Could be these reasons or some others. Maybe some self reflecting would not hurt?
Navis : I don't see the problem. Personnally your comments often makes me want to give another chance to those ASD demos I didn't like. Remember Anoxia ? Reading your comments made me watch it a second time to take the time to understand it... I still dont like it but it's not for artistic nor technical reasons ;)
I don't like Spin for personal reasons, but your explanations about the making of it almost make me want to give a thumb up...

So don't mind about the "cringe". Talking about your demo is IMVHO the best way to help people understand your work.

Trivialfursuit: Sir, I've been involved in the demoscene for almost 20 years, and made several trips abroad to parties with demos. I've spent collective weeks sleeping on floors and watching productions on big screens. I've spoken to MANY people who are willing to listen to how a demo is made, what makes the producers tick and where this whole thing we call "demoscene" is going to. I like to engage in heated conversations and exchange harmless insults with guys like Smash. I personally wish I knew how other creators think, what references do they use and so on.

I've tried to be honest with my popular culture references, my weaknesses as a coder and designer and my wish-lists for the future of the demoscene and ASD. Of course, I've also been supportive of my work and fellow group members. I've used this forum since it was created 10 years ago and continue to do so to give insight into our work and the spirit of our collaboration. Most people rather enjoy that.

I don't have to be apologetic, of all people, to you (a newcomer that has already made 6-7 idiotic comments about things you clearly have no clue about) about my stance and work, but you find me on a good day.

i dont get the naysayer comments and thumbdowns here. the visuals are brilliant and fitting the soundtrack very well.

and just for some constructive feedback on the sound side:
you might want to check the song frequency spectrum next time. even foobars simple spectrometer shows you how much volume there is in the lower frequencies.
which should explain why it sounded so awfully with those bigass speakers at the party, so that you could hardly hear anything else except beat and bass.

to conclude:
this is a great production. period

slyspy: yes, most probably. I should rephrase my comment as: lyrics that serve a dual purpose; to describe an abstract idea/situation with references on objects/situations that are reflected in the visuals. So, for example, when Amusic says "spiral inside a shell", the shell is metaphorical (going round) and real (a man running inside a shell). This approach is similar to the ones taken in many video-clips. I'm not sure this is noticeable or not, I personally wasn't involved in the lyrics, aMusic did. And I think he did a great job in working on two layers at the same time.

I think it is within the pouet etiquette to give him praise for that (even if I'm discussing our own demo), considering how much aggro he gets for lyrics and stuff. Trying now to be an objective viewer I think that the lyrics are actually the best part of this demo.

rez: It is typically against my will to thumb down productions or write, what can be perceived as, nasty comments. I didn't intent my comments to your 64k intro to be cruel but maybe they were. I'm sorry for this. If there is a Main 2012 I'll try to make it and get you a beer!

maybe im too young to appreciate this piece of shit. personally im not a big fan of EBM and dont have any connection to it like others do. but i usually think aMUSIC's other pieces are better, but its cool that that you experiment with singing and such for yourself. thats a big step into maybe making something better, maybe, i dont know. also the combination of running people and animals was not my cup of tea, it didnt fit the tune or something. for me this is the worst demo from you, when i usually adore and think that the other work you do is interessting and all good stuff. i expected a great demo, but it was not, but i don't mind about that since it was an experiment. its ok. i watched it with an subjective mind and not as in a coders view, i sometimes find it hard to judge by both together, so i rule this out now. I dont know how much work Navis put into this either, two weeks(?), but my critisism still stands. im not being cruel, just trying to be honest with my judging. im looking forward too see your next demo.

About the demo, I found myself to be disappointed for seeing again the somethings-escaping-to-somewhere-routine. Visually of course this is quite some advanced shit, and the music had it's moments. Half of the parts seemed little too uneventful for such fast paced track. And I cannot even remember single new idea right now from it :( Except the track has been playing in my head, after only two viewings, strange :) Pity tho about those parts in the music which I do not wish to remember...

On the technical side:

* The outlines: render a frame with a shader that shows the discontinuities of the normal map. On objects with hard edges it will look like a scene from rupture. Upload to CPU, trace it with cvContours or something similar and then you have an array of curves; smooth curves, render with line/quad strips. Find circular patterns and render them as zig-zag lines to give an impression of shading.

The demo actually runs *two* scenes at any given time, each with a different camera. We interpolate between curves from both scenes - a man "becomes" another man by geometrical interpolation of the curves. Problems:

The basic problem is that the indecies of curves between the two sets (scenes) is fairly random. So another mechanism is needed to make the correspondence of curves between scene #1 and #2, using some heuristic that looks into a similarity pattern (curvature, size, locality). The correspondence must be such so that it is retained over several frames, as interpolation takes place. Actually make that ALL frames of the demo, as the interpolant is never 0 or 1, but always between 0.2 and 0.8, for extra effect (check that when the cheetah is running before the rhino; the lines flowing behind it is part of the interpolation effect).
If you ignore the correspondence of curves between the sets of curves (which sets, by the way, have *not* the same size - the size of the sets is completely variable, some times it's even zero), then the effect breaks down completely.

The other problem is with the zig-zag lines: you need to make sure that the indecies for points for a given curve correspond to a similar point on 2D space for consecutive frames, otherwise the zig-zag lines jump up and down randomly. This is another problem, since there is, again, no guarantee that a closed curve is not going to appear and disappear from one frame to another; or two curves will split/merge and so on.

* The particles: the other visual effect in Spin is the particle "blow up". A large set of particles (around 1.5-2m of them) is constructed based on a 3D rendering. This happens on every frame. The particles are quasi-3D, more like depth map but not exactly. They "move" based on a "blow up" 3D function of time and the RGBA of the texel of the rendered image under the particle. You can see this effect working rather well at the end of the demo (animals getting exploded), which, by the way, is my favourite scene. The camera work is quite clever so as to hide the fact that the effect is more 2D than 3D!

What is hard here, of course, is to make it so that the 2D rendering of the contours and the 3D world interact - one can get behind the other like they'd do if there was a magical zbuffer in place. The complete pipeline is:

1) Render a 3D scene of a tunnel with a moon at the back. Retain Z-buffer.
2) Render a rhino with an edge detection shader, using Z-buffer from 1). Upload to CPU. Find and convert into an array of closed splines.
3) Render a running man with an edge detection shader, using Z-buffer from 1). Upload to CPU. Find and convert into an array of closed splines.
4) Take texture of rendered scene of 1) and convert into a particle cloud. Render particle cloud.
5) Correspond splines from 2) and 3) and render interpolated lines on top.

4) and 5) may also share a fake depth buffer (last scene has the man running through particles, some go in front and some behind).

I didn't like it much during the compo, but on closer acquaintance (also, closer to the screen) I do.

Thus I didn't want to comment until I rewatched it properly. I often find "glitchy" stuff messy and annoying, but this one is nice...right amount of it I guess. I still like your "butterfly effect" more, but that's just my taste.. ;)

Besides for the vocals being a bit goofy (like being in a way too low register for that vocalist to handle) I can't see anything profoundly wrong with them. The overall mixing impression is at least better than for "Butterfly..." but that might be because the composition for that prod is very clean which makes every mixing mistake very easy to spot. It's ok as far as I'm concerned. Although, I reckon you could probably increase the volume of the vocals and cut some mid to improve things. Not that I would know anything about that, but still ;D.

Wow!! How do you do that? And when?
Amazing combination of different rendering effects. Actually, I was wondering, why you never applied the "evolution of vision" effects as a linking thread for a bigger production.

Spin is quite amazing, of course. I love the beginning and the animals running over bridges and through walls. My favorite scene, however, is the shape of the man running in the circle. It's almost like redefining Leonardo for the new age of Accelerando. It's especially powerful, because its simple and calm design nicely contrasts the generally hectic overall atmosphere of Spin.

Off topic: One good thing about this particle madness is that it refuses to be video captured. You actually need to run demos again, instead of watching youtube.

while i really like the post effects, they feel a tad too much, but only a tad. dunno how to explain that though.

what i dislike is the re-use of some objects, some of them seem to drag on in many of your releases (the eagle? the bridge?) so this one feels a bit recycled.

The visual impression are really nice in some places but it would have been equally impressive with new models or simply something abstract, I think.

On the musical side, however, I'm not that impressed. My personal preference of style or genre shouldn't get in the way for an objective view on it.

First of all - take a listen to Virgill's song I'm Free from MS2001. Vocals are definately not a bad thing when done right!

In my experience, the vast majority of scenmusicians doing songs with vocals start off by composing a piece of music that could easily stand alone without the lyrics. Then the lyrics are added and perhaps the composition adjusted a bit.

There's actually a huge difference in music meant for vocals and music meant to stand alone.

Gopher has a point about the levels across the frequency spectrum. There seems to be quite a few instruments colliding at the lower frequencies, muting eachother out. Compression would take care of that, and since it's a song for a demo, there should be plenty of compression-modules to chose from. Another - and in my opinion better - way to do it, is to carefully inspect the frequency-response of each instrument used. Try to equalize them, so you have less amplitude on frequency bands that collide. That's a great way to prevent unwanted distortion too.

All in all, I think the track is decently composed, but should be a little less "stand alone" to leave room for the vocals.

Just my 5 cents worth of constructive criticism and reason for the piggy. I am afterall more into music than geometry and shaders, so do forgive me :)

ASD's demos are the greater than any other demogroups.. the only demo thats really as appealing as asd' demos' was that old haujhobb demo with the female singing and elevated.. other demos generally never appealed to the broadest audience possible. whats the pt of making a demo that appeals to just demosceners. moreover asd's demos are technically and artistically complicated as well.

+ overall feeling
+ rendering effects
+ mood of the song
+ refrain
+ runner in tube

- very bad singing/mixing (the voice is way too deep for the overall pitch)
- rhino breaks through walls with greek columns behind - c'mon, how kitchy!
- a tad to long

regarding music, i dont guess it's actually a true EBM, that is much harder with more noisy aggresive sounds; this one clearly reminds me early electronica pioneers Kraftwerk and inlucing visuals in scetchy style as from osciloscope get connected with that too.. check their music clips - flat or wire models of faces etc. i guess the track really fits together with visuals and even the lyrics seems to say something ;) i have absolutely no issue with this track and visuals together, they are melted well even i am not big fun of melodic early electronica music i was happy to hear this kind of music in ASD production; and this piece admire larger set of viewers outside of demoscene as nonsceners are often too quickly bored from "all-the-same" demos, of course the are not the same but the distinctive style of demos is not the cut of tea of every scene outsider.. this is a family demo! everyone will enjoy it :-)

@zden Being inspired by Call the Ships to Port by Covenant, the track is technically "Futurepop" (a sub-genre of EBM) started by bands Covenant and VNV Nation. :)

Also, Spin is in the top 50 pc demos in less then a week! Epic win!

Wow. Well done.
Some recycling, maybe an overuse of the "running"-theme in the last few asd-years and the trademark-kitsch looks a bit out of place this time… but these are minor (and stupid) complaints. Everything fits together really well and makes an awesome ride!

The vocals, I don't think they are bad, but some parts sound really strange… not as perfect as the rest of the prod demands. (I'm one of the few who really loved, and still loves, the old progressive-rock-guitar-electro-overkill-style so my taste and my expectations may play a role here)

funny vocals
added on the 2011-08-15 12:00:46 by xeNusion xeNusion
Funny that people are again complaining about the vocals when this time they're not even the problem - the whole mixing of the song is waaaay off (I mean, bass part of the drums at the far right, treble at the far left? WTF?). Quite weird that you say you took Call the Ships to Port as a reference because that's one of the best produced tracks in the whole genre, and Spin sounds like a _very_ early Apop or VNV song instead. Or rather like a bastard child of Underworld and the Crüxshadows. Or something. I'm looking forward to LB's remix; the composition is, again, good. :)

About the demo itself: Very much what pixtur said; somewhat less lenght wouldn't have hurt tho.

Very nice visuals in this demo, I especially liked the parts where raster graphics morph into a normal 3D scene (like in the rhino breaking walls part). The music is solid in the literal sense: Designed to blow up your sound system. Its only issue is the rather dodgy accent at times.

Watched it on wine 1.2.3 with no issues whatsoever.

As always, watching an ASD demo reaches to the depths of my soul and gives me one of the best pleasures that I ever experience.

However, the vocals are really bad for the watching experience. They pop up to the foreground and make the whole rest of the stream (video, music) secondary to them. A first-class demo becomes a mediocre clip for a mediocre song. It should not be like that. Visuals must stay in the foreground, with music augmenting them, and vocals just ruin this tight balance. The music on its own is really good though, so I think I would also love to watch it with a vocal-free but otherwise the same soundtrack. Can I also get it please?

"Voting with thumbs down for such a release should be considered blasphemy." It's NOT !!! Do you know why ?

*** DEMO developers please read !!! ***

Because i will give every DEMO thumbs down if i must restart computer because developer never thought that his demo might not work and he put window on the top, so in case of failure you can't do anything but restart computer.

Screen is black, windows is on top of others and keyboard is disabled. No task manager no chance to quit program.

You must restart computer. This is problem with most of the demos.

Why developers cannot leave chance to user to quit inresposible demo ?

I don't want to restart computer for every demo that don't work and you have very good chance that would happen because many graphic cards are not supported in most of the demos.

THUMBS DOWN for every bug not ready demo.

so in the end you convinced me ;)

(its often like that: you produce some demo, seeing it or parts of it several hundred times and you exactly now what fits it...others need to watch it several times to get it this way aswell then...but comment after the first run, just like me! )

I don't mind the music in this, the actual music and song is decent even if the style is not my cup of tea. I am not feeling the low register vocal used for the verses however I really like the higher harmony used in the chorus parts. Anyway the visuals are really cool and unique and honestly I have no idea how Navis codes this sort of thing, even after reading the explanation. I hope ASD can come back again sometime soon and bring us some more of their unique style.

Just re-ran this thing. Still nice watch.

The vocals may not be comparable to your favorite choice (i see bieber and timberlake references in the comments). However, i've always thought of EBM as comparable to punk inspired music. For me, the "primitive" vocals, adds to the roughness of the sound track and that grows on me.

Watching the demo made me wonder if it's too long; but then again - I wasn't bored :-)
Almost fell off my chair when I saw this.
