incredible work!!!
the span between pure funkiness and the pleasure of excellent chips, be it mod, xm or sid, is just awesome. this is undoubtedly the best musicdisk I've ever heard, regardless of platform. just pure brilliance..
as mrhoward said: a gift!

ps: I miss an automatic advance between the tracks though, so it can just play in the background while I'm asleep :)
pps: reed: after this I hate you for no longer being able to call you a lamer ;)

The instruction at "'0x00243a86" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written".
<- launching twisted_hw.exe

too bad 'cause the chips are nice (fx keys are not working in sw mode?)

make sure you have dx 8.1b, we have a patch that we are going to upload very soon that deals with different bug issues.

dx8.1 in debug mode
added on the 2002-10-16 11:06:33 by spengler spengler
you need dx8.1b not dx8.1.. we had this crash on my machine a couple of weeks ago as i had dx8.1 debug, and there were a couple of functions that couldnt be found (resulting in the null pointer reference you describe). get dx8.1b and it'll be solved.
added on the 2002-10-16 11:13:56 by smash smash
k, downloading dx8.1b (and sdk)... next time, mention it correctly in the nfo...

Music isn't as good as in the Emissions music disks, interface is almost as cool as Andromeda's Mirror ... and otherwise the best and funkiest chipdisk I know on the PC platform ;)

"- Mommy, mommy! That musicdisk ate all my CPU!"
"- Why don't you put it to sleep(); ?"

Although I am a CPC nostalgic myself, the tunes are quite good, the interface too. But it would be nice if it let my 1GHz+ computer do other things as well, for both the sw and hw versions... Also, an option to disable the 3d effects on the hw version (by clicking in the circle maybe?) would be perfect :-)

moT,

You wouldnt happen to have played an mpeg in woindows media player before running the musicdiisk? (pr0n perhaps hehe), cos we know there is a problem that occurs under that situation.
I'm running a 700mhz duron and use photoshop while listening to the disk using the hw player, and everything seems fine and dandy.

ps: turn off effects with the 'e' key.
added on the 2002-10-16 12:20:43 by graffik graffik
so it doesn't work with dx8.1a and you can't use media-player before running this? wow, excellent coding :)
added on the 2002-10-16 12:46:42 by sagacity sagacity
hm.. maybe we should have made it work with dx6 too (its not reasonable to expect the latest released dx to be installed, right?) :)

THE BEST MUSIC-DISK EVER !!!!!!!!!!
rulez added on the 2002-10-16 12:55:08 by norecess norecess
sagacity, this does not work on dx3,5,7 but it shuld work on the newest Direct-X, all developers should use DX 8.1b or they are really stupid (if their aim is to develope dx8 prods). About the Media player bug, its a common windows bug that alot of people are aware of, there is a patch on Microsoft for this, and if you didn't know about this bug i'm not sure you should develope for the Windows Platform.
added on the 2002-10-16 12:58:01 by pantaloon pantaloon
compiling with dx8.1(b) headers can result in some fuzz with d3ddev creation on users running the dx8.0 runtimes. so i'd prefer fooling the factory func ;)

in fact, it only crashes with directx (8.1b here) in debug mode ( dunno why? )
added on the 2002-10-16 14:43:35 by spengler spengler
pantaloon: if it's such a common bug, why is your application the only app that exhibits it, on my pc? and if you actually *read* what I wrote you'd notice I didn't actually say you should support dx3/5/7, but you were too busy flaming, I guess.
added on the 2002-10-16 14:48:00 by sagacity sagacity
it is a common bug in the Windows community that after playing mpeg files in Media player it doesnt release all the memory. I can't answere your question really, since i know nothing abour your hardware/software setup.

I am a bug report:

System #1:
Intel Celeron 1.1->1.46GHz (256K cache), VIA 133T, 512MB PC133 SDRAM, NVidia Geforce 4Ti 4200/64Mb, Windows XP SP1, DX 8.1, 30.82 detonators WHQL

System #2:
Intel Pentium 4 1800->2400 (512Kb cache), Intel 845 chipset, 256 MB PC133 SDRAM, NVidia TNT2 Ultra/32Mb, Windows 2000 SP3, DX 8.1, 30.82 detonators WHQL

On both systems, both musicdisk versions exibit 50-70% CPU ulilisation, even with the visuals disabled. I prefered to assume that you forgot to put a sleep() somewhere than to assume that your player consumes hundreds of times more CPU resources than the ones on the original machines (c64, 486 etc.).

Hope that helps :-)
added on the 2002-10-16 15:08:20 by moT moT
Oh, on both systems, I did not use windows media player. I never use that shitty piece of software anyway - I watch my pr0n with divX player or winamp3 :-)

good alternative to the rebels disks, still the interface is so heavy that it makes the tunes choppy. some tracks are great some are so so. great all over experience though.

great disc, only problem i have is that i cant scroll the window in the browser for this thread while the musicdisc runs, due to low CPU on this machine ;((

i guess XP1500+ with gf2 gts just isnt ok to multitask a chipdisk ;(

ok....

Nice gfx, but damnit, time to make another logo to use instead of that one? Or maybe you cant? =) lalala, jk

buggY! Yeah, get errormsgses all the time, but they dont affect anything, they just plop up and dissapear, and then disc freezes for like 10 secs, and come back to life again,

oh, yeah, only 50% of the songs work, the rest wount play, mostsly maktone songs that dont play =( No clue why

Music is good, Some of Reeds songs are boring since they are made with parts from other reed songs? =)

interface is cuter than zik =)

still, Biggest Thumb up for a long long time, great work!

Very nice musicdisk ;) good work guys, congratulations.

However some small details make it's not perfect ;) :
- a tune-playing progress indicator ?
- an option to loop a tune forever (so that i can listen continuously to "Summer parks" by maktone without having to press play every 2"43 ;) ?
- as it was said in the thread already, the musicdisk swallows 70% of my cpu calculation power even when it's minimized. any idea to solve this pantaloon?

that's all for now,
have a nice day

great tunes, didn't hear a single one that i didn't like. i'd say the interface is a tad too huge to be incorporated into 'just' a chipdisk , but then again it fits to some of the tunes which bear way more than just the usual chip-feel.

excellent work by Maktone, Reed and the others, i like a lot this SID style
just a thing : can you add a volume button to the interface next time ?
and the scoller more fast please :]
i dont speak about sw version, wich is too complex to use for me ;-p

Zone, just to answer your comments, there is a volume control on the right of the effects, you can also use the up/down keys on the keyboard.
And for those that havent found it yet, you can open any mp3, sid, xm, mod etc and play it using this interface (just press the 'f' at the bottom of the interface).
The rest of the controls are written in the nfo (the keys are based on those in winamp)
added on the 2002-11-15 19:36:21 by graffik graffik
Sheesh. I've totally forgot to rate this excellent chipdisc.. sorry for that.
Well, what can I say? This chipdisc totally owns. There are some minor downponts, such as the fact that some of the featured tunes aren't chiptunes. But I won't complain too much about that, because the rest of the music is so great it makes my spine chill. Especially reed's stuff (his chiptunes, that is) is stunning.
The interface is pretty nice, but I think it's sort of a paradox that a chipdisc is this cpu-demanding.
However, a "thumbs up" is not enough to describe this disc. You have to download it in order to understand how breathtaking it is.
rulez added on the 2002-11-25 03:52:50 by edzes edzes
well, i was to lazy to include a sleep (or rather i forgot it) and thats why it's so cpu demanding, ive now added a sleep in the loop and it pretty much solved it all =) just mail me if you want a new version, pantaloon@fairlight.org

great tunes!! (especially the turboimploder remake!) --since you included a sw version I was able to "even" watch it on my (lame) notebook.. however, next time pls don't map unsupported chars to 'A' which makes the scrolltext a bit hard to read :P cheers!
