nice to did a winning intro with you after 7 years scene silence... last was magic64 in 1995!
old wolves still has sharp teeth ;)

hope you all liked it... was quite a lot of work... look out what fits into 4k next time ;)

Nice nice intro, long live RTRT ;-)
rulez added on the 2002-04-03 14:22:28 by [Quartz] [Quartz]
very nice visual with traditional raytrace scenes. also a bit slow, but i known is hard to find a speed vs quality compromise in 4k.
rulez added on the 2002-04-03 14:24:30 by picard picard
a pc 4k intro that received more votes than any pc demo -- with admittedly overall poor quality -- and wild compo entry. 'two thumbs up' from me for this kick-ass-prod :)

Slow but impressive. This one will rock on a P8 100 ghz :)
rulez added on the 2002-04-03 16:11:13 by Wain Wain
one message concerning speed: of course there's a tradeoff between code-size and speed. but there are two more things to say: the intro runs fine on almost any athlon/duron processor (even duron 700mhz runs nice...). it runs ok on fast p3 and sucks on p4. i will make a final version which is slightly larger, but with inlined vector routines, so you will have even more fun watching it. what the problem with p4 is, is to be discovered... let's look what intel says ;) ... stay tuned ...
added on the 2002-04-03 19:58:09 by frenetic frenetic
Ok, it will probably be slower on a p8 100 ghz then :)
added on the 2002-04-03 20:07:23 by Wain Wain
great.. and i heard a lot of parts were written in C ... and this is awesome.. :)
rulez added on the 2002-04-03 20:39:45 by prost prost
Congs for this 4k. Especially the textures are nice and the easter bunny gives it a special note. It runs rather slow on my not-so-new hardware, but still faster than some hw-accelerated 64k or demos. The only downside is the way it treats the desktop and the other windows (maybe this can be changed in the final version).

Hope George Lucas won't sue them for the name... :)

A bit slow, but it rocks!!
rulez added on the 2002-04-04 00:51:31 by bp bp
uh, soundtrack? heard a beep or two first time I ran it, but a window kept rendering over the top so I had to quit and close the window and then when I ran it again there weren't even beeps.

also not painfully slow, okay-looking, fucking small and some other stuff. I'd vote rulez if I wasn't such a meanie.
added on the 2002-04-04 01:19:07 by golrien golrien
to above comment... there are no parts written in c. the intro code (the raytracer, texture generator, sound synthesis and music player) is completely assembler. but it's all inline assembly in visual c++. so it's nice to develop and debug. the main loop and some initializing calls are still c code... visual c++ compiles and links all together

Ouch. Makes the previous year's winner (Juggler 2001) look pretty bad in comparison :). Didn't even think this much RT was possible in 4k, and with music. Wish it ended with a proper title/credit screen tho, rather than a here's-what-we-showed-you review.
rulez added on the 2002-04-04 17:55:58 by phoenix phoenix
yes indeed. not too artsy, but technically impressive.
rulez added on the 2002-04-05 08:47:16 by bhead bhead
i thought it sucked when i saw it on the partyplace (because it was running on a 1,6ghz)..
but it runs smooth like hell on my athlon750!
and the render-quality is amazing for that!
and still some place left for a nice (?) tune..
rule!
rulez added on the 2002-04-05 13:51:00 by toxie toxie
it is a nice tune :))
thats why it's called "industrial", the raytracing is "light" and the 4k boudary is "magic"..
thus you know why its named like this *gg*

this prod is really great! well done motion blur filter or something, so the animation doesn't look too artificial. it runs very well on my duron 800. raytracing is quite cool althought today triangle-based animation players seem to be more popular. i hope in the future there will be more productions that combine polygon-based rendering and raytracing for the ultimate tradeoff between rendering speed and visual impression.

An amazing 4K intro with some quality raytracing. Even music too! My only complaint is the third or fourth scene seems to be more shadow than anything else.

One day, not too long from the present, we are all going to be looking in RT-accelerated demos and nag that they are boooring...

Till that day.... :-)

Also, to whom it may concern, the P4 has a pipeline longer than route 66 in order to manage higher frequences. Thus, an execution misprediction can slow a program down to P2 levels.

Also, in fullscreen mode, several desktop items kept flashing over the intro.
added on the 2002-04-08 05:27:24 by moT moT
@toxie:
that's not quite correct -- as the introductory screen at the party stated, it was recorded on a mobile pIII since the p4 turned it into a - rather nice - slide show :( moT seems to be on the right track.
@thorn:
they did come up with a solution to make this scene more visually appealing, but it was already too late. my bet is that the sheer simplicity of the approach made it hard for their overclocked, advanced brains to stumble accross :)

I hate to be trolling about this, but I think it's very difficult (if not impossible) to make this go fast on a P4. Intel made a compromise with the P4. They increased the length of its pipeline (among other terrible things like cutting down some L1 cache) in order to be able to reach higher frequencies. Don't forget that in the corporate market MHz is what sells. Now that made some programs actually go slower because of memory fetching mispredictions (this prod is a fine example). Intel addressed that problem by creating smart compilers that aligned the code in a way to avoid mispredictions as possible. Now some could argue whether this is good or bad, but the fact is that if you are writing asm code (as in this prod) it must be really hard to optimize it for the P4 by hand. And for all I know, 4k prod coders are not using compilers :-) Anyway, all the above explains why hardcore coders generaly prefer Athlons today. Athlons may be easily cookable but since they have half the pipeline of a P4 (and almost exactly the pipeline of a P3), they do not suffer from that problem. Finally, that's the reason why I've been sticking to my P3 for a long time now :-)

Really great code in here, both with music and advanced raytracer in 4k - but the whole point of a demo is realtime, and this almost doesn't qualify. Look at intros like Gamma for how to do raytracing a lot faster...

But keep up the good work.
