amazing raytracing scenes o_O
rulez added on the 2002-04-02 21:27:18 by robotriot
yes m'am, I like it!
hope you all liked it... was quite a lot of work... look out what fits into 4k next time ;)
Nice nice intro, long live RTRT ;-)
very nice visual with traditional raytrace scenes. also a bit slow, but i known is hard to find a speed vs quality compromise in 4k.
a pc 4k intro that received more votes than any pc demo -- with admittedly overall poor quality -- and wild compo entry. 'two thumbs up' from me for this kick-ass-prod :)
Slow but impressive. This one will rock on a P8 100 ghz :)
one message concerning speed: of course there's a tradeoff between code-size and speed. but there are two more things to say: the intro runs fine on almost any athlon/duron processor (even duron 700mhz runs nice...). it runs ok on fast p3 and sucks on p4. i will make a final version which is slightly larger, but with inlined vector routines, so you will have even more fun watching it. what the problem with p4 is, is to be discovered... let's look what intel says ;) ... stay tuned ...
Ok, it will probably be slower on a p8 100 ghz then :)
great.. and i heard a lot of parts were written in C ... and this is awesome.. :)
Congs for this 4k. Especially the textures are nice and the easter bunny gives it a special note. It runs rather slow on my not-so-new hardware, but still faster than some hw-accelerated 64k or demos. The only downside is the way it treats the desktop and the other windows (maybe this can be changed in the final version).
Hope George Lucas won't sue them for the name... :)
A bit slow, but it rocks!!
uh, soundtrack? heard a beep or two first time I ran it, but a window kept rendering over the top so I had to quit and close the window and then when I ran it again there weren't even beeps.
also not painfully slow, okay-looking, fucking small and some other stuff. I'd vote rulez if I wasn't such a meanie.

to above comment... there are no parts written in c. the intro code (the raytracer, texture generator, sound synthesis and music player) is completely assembler. but it's all inline assembly in visual c++. so it's nice to develop and debug. the main loop and some initializing calls are still c code... visual c++ compiles and links all together
*whoa*
Ouch. Makes the previous year's winner (Juggler 2001) look pretty bad in comparison :). Didn't even think this much RT was possible in 4k, and with music. Wish it ended with a proper title/credit screen tho, rather than a here's-what-we-showed-you review.
yes indeed. not too artsy, but technically impressive.
i thought it sucked when i saw it on the partyplace (because it was running on a 1,6ghz)..
but it runs smooth like hell on my athlon750!
and the render-quality is amazing for that!
and still some place left for a nice (?) tune..
rule!

R0k is my buddy! This is absolutely awesome :D
this prod is really great! well done motion blur filter or something, so the animation doesn't look too artificial. it runs very well on my duron 800. raytracing is quite cool althought today triangle-based animation players seem to be more popular. i hope in the future there will be more productions that combine polygon-based rendering and raytracing for the ultimate tradeoff between rendering speed and visual impression.
what rac sayz.
I don't really know what to say except:
"Man, this RULES"
"Man, this RULES"
Impressive. REALLY impressive.
yeah, this is very very good! and it even works on my old PC (with totally acceptable framerate)
An amazing 4K intro with some quality raytracing. Even music too! My only complaint is the third or fourth scene seems to be more shadow than anything else.
One day, not too long from the present, we are all going to be looking in RT-accelerated demos and nag that they are boooring...
Till that day.... :-)
Till that day.... :-)
ahhh!!
coder magic!!
Really, Is this 4k!?
nice raytrace.

Also, to whom it may concern, the P4 has a pipeline longer than route 66 in order to manage higher frequences. Thus, an execution misprediction can slow a program down to P2 levels.
Also, in fullscreen mode, several desktop items kept flashing over the intro.

@toxie:
that's not quite correct -- as the introductory screen at the party stated, it was recorded on a mobile pIII since the p4 turned it into a - rather nice - slide show :( moT seems to be on the right track.
@thorn:
they did come up with a solution to make this scene more visually appealing, but it was already too late. my bet is that the sheer simplicity of the approach made it hard for their overclocked, advanced brains to stumble accross :)

It violates my 'NO CHROME SHPERES ON CHECKERBOARDS BEYOND THIS POINT' sign on the door, but what the hell...it's cool!
boah ! krasses raytraycy !!!
it rulez !!!
incredible
incredible
Fucking great job.
zob ! :)
graaaaaaa
yup :)
I'm a coder, I like it.
Very impressive!
cool
this is some rather nasty shit
GIMME MORE
GIMME MORE
not bad, not at all. though its a bit slow.
well done!
as far as i remember.. was nice.
however if there was no 4096 bytes limit i wouldnt thumb it up.;
I'm not original but that's really, really impressive. Second time I'm blasted by a PC production. (first one was DasProdukt :-))
Verrrrry nice! :-) Runs smooth in all but one scene on my athlon 1.4ghz
ihr seid helden!
good, but painfully slow.
I watched in on some 333Mhz, so I think it's a nice slideshow in 4k :)
totally hosed my desktop
very nice, me thinks.
neat
really really good...wow!
ps: just fucks up the windows-screen...
ps: just fucks up the windows-screen...
Slow as hell on every computer that I've run it, even if they were 1500<, but the scenes are impressive :P
phreakin' awsome.
everything said.
it was/is pretty nice. it sadly let my desktop shine through like every second. =)
One word: Wow. :-)
I hope it will be a p4 fix for it because it`s really really impressive.
1. changedisplaysettings
2. create topmost window
this solves the icon and window size problem
i like it
but its slower on my p4 2,8 then on my athlon750

this is the shit!
I hate to be trolling about this, but I think it's very difficult (if not impossible) to make this go fast on a P4. Intel made a compromise with the P4. They increased the length of its pipeline (among other terrible things like cutting down some L1 cache) in order to be able to reach higher frequencies. Don't forget that in the corporate market MHz is what sells. Now that made some programs actually go slower because of memory fetching mispredictions (this prod is a fine example). Intel addressed that problem by creating smart compilers that aligned the code in a way to avoid mispredictions as possible. Now some could argue whether this is good or bad, but the fact is that if you are writing asm code (as in this prod) it must be really hard to optimize it for the P4 by hand. And for all I know, 4k prod coders are not using compilers :-) Anyway, all the above explains why hardcore coders generaly prefer Athlons today. Athlons may be easily cookable but since they have half the pipeline of a P4 (and almost exactly the pipeline of a P3), they do not suffer from that problem. Finally, that's the reason why I've been sticking to my P3 for a long time now :-)
perhaps you want to take a look at our new 4k intro 'Mojo Dreams' released at the rocking Breakpoint 2003 party:

this 4k is much better than most of the 64k's out there. frenetic is a good coder.
*wiiii* rules! :)
*R*U*L*E*Z*
yeah really cool!
Really great code in here, both with music and advanced raytracer in 4k - but the whole point of a demo is realtime, and this almost doesn't qualify. Look at intros like Gamma for how to do raytracing a lot faster...
But keep up the good work.

Amazing.
My i2.5 make it slow, where's the slightly larger final ;)

Music, textures, raytracing, multiple scenes... What more could you want from 4K?
extremely good looking and extremely slow
This is very, very good.
Impressive, deserves the first place.
amazing(ly slow)
I don't have words to describe this :)
wow..!!! extremely slow?? runs about 30fps here
Absolutely amazing 4k-Prod.
yummy
bwuahaha i havent commented on this sweety yet :P
Respect!
Amazing visuals, good bunny. ;)
A beauty in 4K.
A beauty in 4K.
totally slow shit, but cool it got alll squeezed into 4k. almost thumb up time.
rules except for that bunny and the slowness.
so, so cool. awesome 4k. goes in 'best' folder
rules except the bunny and "rob is jarig" inspired tune d:
teh pwnage!
good
i`m in love
Bad and boring music, impressive code.
woohoo raytrace me!
Wow!
impressive.!
Ok, a riddle:
Q: How do you know a 4k intro has a good packer?
A: When you put it in a zip file the compressed file becomes 1 byte bigger than the original file.

wow
Great bunny. Music is rather baad...
Nice raytracer!
my favorite 4k
oh no.
great raytracer <3
