- Great, thanks for releasing this. :-) I'm considering switching to this for the FAP music compo.

- Gasman, thanks for the kind words.. The compo crew is still as friendly as ever, even though online discussions might sometimes come across a bit blunt.
BTW. 2012 was the controversial year when we decided to limit the compo only to platforms that actually had a demo scene when they were contemporary.
As a reminder, here they were:
Commodore 64 + 1541-II
Commodore Plus/4 + 1551 / 1541-II
Commodore Amiga 500, 512/512, Kickstart 1.3
Atari ST, 1MB, double sided floppy
Atari 130xe + floppy
MSX1 + 3.5" drive
Sinclair Spectrum 128k + tape
Amstrad CPC6128
We ran the compo with this set of hardware in 2012, 2013 and 2014. The amount of entries was very dire every year, (we actually had to resort to asking around for compo filler almost every year), yet these are all relatively popular platforms which still have an active scene.
I seem to remember there was moderate controversy regarding the lack of VIC-20. There was no VIC-20 scene in the golden days, everyone ditched them for C-64s in the 80s.
I remember also that Viznut's name was brought up as a reason why the VIC-20 should have been kept in. Viznut's last VIC-20 entry for Assembly Oldskool was in 2008, four years before we decided to drop the platform. Yes, he made a real wild demo for the VIC in 2014, but this only happened, because someone brought one to the party and asked him to code something for it, so he did a party prod before the deadline.
The immense amount of platforms allowed was always a source of complaints even during the anything before 1992 rule set. Especially the C-64 scene has constantly refused to have anything to do with the compo (and Assembly the party), for the most part of the current millennium.
Let's see what we come up with for 2016. Heck, perhaps we'll even organize a vote to see what people want to see for the oldskool compo in 2016? No one could possibly complain about crowdsourced rules, eh? :-D - isokadded on the 2015-02-04 20:02:09

- Ah sorry, serves me right for posting without a proper night's sleep, you did mention you don't have a solution for it either.
And that's the problem I have too. When there was a year limit, people complained, then when we changed it to only be computers that had an actual scene, people complained some more. Now that we're doing a one-off Amiga only year in celebration of the 30-year-old Amiga, it's not a good idea either.
C'mon. :-D - isokadded on the 2015-02-04 06:47:06

- Gasman, I sitll have no idea why there was a steady decline of prods every year during the old rules, then any attempt of freshening up the compo has just been met with a bunch of complaining.
I've noticed you complaining quite often, so to me this sounds like you obviously have a silver bullet solution. What is your recipe for success? Which year had the ultimate rules for oldskool, guaranteed to bring in lots of entries? - isokadded on the 2015-02-04 06:39:54
