• @Jope: I would have been one of the ones complaining when you took out the "non-mainstream scene" platforms, so yeah, I'm still complaining when the platform range gets squeezed further.
  
  I understand that this is only a one-off, but I can't help but see it as part of a general trend in the future of the compo. Assembly was the first major party to introduce a cross-platform oldskool compo - and even as the rest of the party has gradually turned into a 90% gamers zone, it has a place in my heart as the party with the friendly, enthusiastic compo crew that was always willing to give my weirdass British computer a moment in the spotlight. To reach the point where the other platforms are 'expendable', even for one year, feels like another step towards the inevitable death of the compo. I hope I'm wrong.
  
  I realise I'm probably being overly melodramatic here. We've still got the wild compo; I'll probably be missing this year's Assembly again anyhow; and I don't believe for one moment that my sporadic contributions to the compo are a reason to keep it open to all platforms indefinitely. But I think I'm justified in feeling a bit of regret at what we're losing here, especially when it's being portrayed as a celebration. Anyway, thanks for keeping the flame burning on the oldskool compo for all this time!

• I still have no idea why systematically chopping platforms out of the oldskool compo was meant to be a solution to anything, but then again I don't have any better ideas for how it could have been rescued.

• The one thing that really bugs me here is the use of VHS tracking glitches as scene transitions - a creator in 1985 wouldn't have done that as a design choice, so it breaks the illusion that we're watching an authentic video from an alternate universe (where a mid-80s audience would have been shitting themselves at the futuristic visuals)...
  
  Nitpicking aside... this is a gorgeous bit of kitsch. The music is absolutely spot on.

• Speaking as someone who's been following the JS scene for a while and getting annoyed at how much of it consists of faux-retro tributes... this is actually pretty damn good! Too often, retro styling is used as a crutch to avoid coming up with any original ideas (a spinning cube in javascript is *meh*, but a low-res spinning cube in javascript is like *totally retro hipster awesome*) but that's not the case here - there are lots of neat twists on effects, and well-done pixel art.

  Either way, from the reference docs it's clear that there's a huge amount of devotion towards a very silly goal here, which is a good thing in my book... here is my upward-pointing thumb-shaped instruction pointer.

• Wow, what a perfect moment to discover this. At various points in the last week-and-a-bit, Okkie and I have shared rants about how the demoscene and the chipmusic scene have so much to learn from each other and really need to cross-pollinate a whole lot more. In my mind this is exactly the sort of thing that would result... something that would rock the dancefloor at EINDBAAS just as well as it would rock a demoparty.
