Tomcat: I bought volume 1 at bp06

How can the owners get the update
for their book ? I hope you dont expect
that we pay alot of money for book+update ??

can current owners download the update somewhere
perhaps?

Please show us an insight for the service
you can offer ! thnx..

How about offering the update as .pdf and just giving the access key to registered users? (I know this isn't much of a protection though ;))

I assume you guys mean the full new version of the book when you're talking about "update". I don't think (and don't recommend) Tomcat will spread that digitally, but just a list with revisions like publishers of science books tend to release would be nice though...

Well, I've personally never heard of any book publisher distributing "updates" when a new edition of a book was released. There will be a Second Edition, with some minor corrections, but all in all, there won't be too big changes on the factual side.

Tomcat: u didnt answer my question :)

Tomcat, it happens, for example with scientific books, that the authors/publishers arrange to put a page online with the list of differences between the old and new version. Not always very precise, but precise enough when there are errors.

magic: he did.
MadenMann: nope.. he didnt tell what the update
costs for people who already own the book
added on the 2006-07-16 22:20:53 by magic magic
magic: isn't that obvious? It's simply a new edtion of the book he's talking about so if you want it you have to pay the full prize.

tomcat: what me and knos are talking about is a list of errata, something like this.

Sparcus: no that isnt obvious. Alot of people already purchased Freax#1 and you can imagine they dont like it to pay again for the same book with the update
as they always own the book.. Just give us the update!

On the net most stuff is updated patched etc..
and its free download as a service to the people
who already bought the main program.

magic: you seem to think that the update is a bunch of extra pages, an extra appendix or booklet something like that. But it's not, it's a new version of the old book with some errors fixed. This happens with all books with sell good enough for a second revision and you never get the new revision for free.

The "patch" you are talking about is what knos and me were referring too, a list of errata, which is usualy available for free.

Some publishers of books include a registration sheet in their books. If you send it back, you'll automatically receive new revisions of these books by mail, or at least you'll be offered them for a lower price.

Ah, yeah, the junkmail traps, I never fill in those sheets ;-)

What's also funny BTW: Some authors google for their book title and if you mentioned their book at your website, they'll send you a personal email advertising their new releases etc. At least that happened to me once.

An errata sheet is a good idea. I will make one.

However, you should quit thinking about Freax as a "scientific" book. It is not more scientific than any diskmagazine or papermag, except thicker and hence a bit more expensive.

I think the word you're looking for is "coffeetable book", it definately has the pictures :-)

The book went to print today... I hope they'll finish it for ASM...

So then... any news about the second volume ?

rumours say it will be released shortly after the forthcoming hungarian revolution, whenever that may occur

really want vol 2, as 2001 - now is where i stopped following the scene for a while and it might help fill in more gaps

maybe the combined vol1/vol2 edition is the way to go now, i definitely wouldn't be against buying that.
