I remember one ST Format magazine long time ago.
When making 3D game Midwinter, amiga is slower than 8 mhz ST :D
Bad coding? Prolly. Dungeon Master was damn slow on amiga. Why? If i remember this right, DM needs 1mb of mem when playing it with amiga. Why?

Hey Hey Hey why make war compare? PC with AMIGA.AMIGA with FALCON.C64 with 800?
each maschine is good...
beautiful=hardware+design
ATARI FALCON is beautiful...
AMIGA 1200 is beautiful...
AMIGA 600 is beautiful... /i think best design of computer ever made.../
ATARI MegaSTE is beautiful...
Friends do not forget PLATFORM = PEOPLE...
By the way -> PC is UGLY
UGLY => HARDWARE+DESIGN
Tunning cases are ugly... Pc cases are ugly...
Why engineers at Thermaltake,MERCURY,KOBIAN...etc
are still designing like for 1985 trend??? BIG NOISY
STUPID DESIGN...
Epox,MSI -> only makes steroides on chipsets.....
So FALCON was revolution.Only Sega and other consoles uses DSPs.So big respect of engineers. And big shot with screwdriver into face in PAST ATARI MARKETING...
I think Atari Falcon scene will bring us some suprises with CT63 architecture...
By the way Falcon rules with 14mghz+DSP56k
But I am going to have a coffe...

What you do with DSP if its so difficult to code?
Atari Falcons DSP is crazy. Only twisted coders can code it.
And even they can use it and code it, they cant use it full power. Atari Falcon DSP is really, really difficult to code and use it with its full power.
When properly coded and utilized(dsp) check some Falcon demos that basically rans only with that DSP and the main processor is doing nothing.

By the time Falcon has been released, be sure coders know how to use that DSP even if it's hard to code. This brought SIMD instructions and 3 regs instructions: add r0, r1, r2: add r0 + r1 and put result in r2.
DSP are everywhere, into sound card, into embedded hardware / mobile phone, everywhere and so they are surely not that hard to code. Remember how hard was the 8 bits to code, nothing can beat this except coding in binary.

Gravis Ultraound was DSP based? Yes but easy to code because of public SDK? Is there any book of Falcon DSP?
Of course there are, falcs DSP happen to have a real bitch to code. It can a lot of stuff, but falcons bus cant give needed information as falcons dsp wants.

That's not the same! DSP is great but BUS is weak 16 bit width! Yes that's also an EC30 and not a real 030 meaning no FPU is integrated.
Why? At the time everything was expensive and they tried by all means to sell computers at low low prices. This is because these machines were mainly sold in Europe because PC was the standard in USA. PC was not expensive when it was weak power but then with the 386 and further machine it becames more expensive, whatever it succeeds because it had a dedicated monitor sold with it and parents were not OK that kids use their TV for computing!!! Marketing is important to ensure the success of a computer, and PC success is purely based on a Marketing / economy intelligence process .
Amiga was EC20 not 020! No HD, ... Everything which was optional on our 32 bits favoured machines were standard on PC hence bring more custommer and more possibility.
And now we are forced to embrace the M$ philosophy and using its damned apis! Things have changed.

please stop ep: half of things you said are half-true :) (that's around 3/4 of true :))
there is no MC68030 with integrated FPU! MC68EC030 is standard 030 CPU without MMU.
falcon have 8bit DSP host port.
@moredhel Falcon DSP is standard motorola 56K family DSP, you have motorolas reference manual for start...

@calimero cpu -> to dsp is 8bit bus width only?
If so, designers of falcon mobos.
If cpu is 8bit only wide to dsp then i understand some falcon demos better.
It if 8bit wide only, 80% you code that god damn dsp right?
And that 14mhz main processor basically does nothing?
Im i right about this: 14mhz<->8bitbus<->dsp?
So when coding, code dsp directly if you want some speed?
Who designed falcon mobo anyway =)

moredhel, elan:
the host port between CPU and DSP is 8 bit wide indeed. it's a part of the 56001 architecture, really. and not atari's fault. it's meant to be an audio DSP, and for audio applications ~3 MB/sec <-> DSP is fast enough.
BTW the bus is 16 MHz, not 14 MHz. the main ram is faster than the a1200's chipram.
falcon has a full 030, with MMU.. but no FPU, since no 68030 with integrated FPU exits.. anyway, MMU doesn't always have advantages. try jumping through memory alot.. translation lookaside cache will miss like hell and slow everything down horribly ;) (and i could tell more details that nobody cares about hehehe ;))
enough fact bashing for today..

@moredhel "And that 14mhz main processor basically does nothing?"
and Falcon has 16MHz 68030, not 14MHz -EP's mistake!
host port is 8bit wide and it's a bitch but I'm not a coder so I can't tell you details about it but I see that people really trying to find best ways to transfer data to DSP and from... check forum @ dhs.atari.org

hi earx, nice reading at dhs forum :) - you was faster in replying :)
and bash some more facts, it's always interesting to read something new :)

Is there any HDD (or Compact Flash) image available for download with pre-installed system and demoscene collection (best Atari Falcon demos and stuff)?
