The rumor that the company was going to lock down the win32 platform (using the mobo cyrypto chips and the trusted platform thing) was discounted immediately after it started... sadly the slashdot freak-out effect magnified the rumor past the point of recovery. The bootloader -might- conceivably someday get locked down, which would make linux not boot, but they've said in press that they would never lock down amateur coding in the way we care about. To do that would be death.

8-bit buggery: Rumor has it that it will run on Larrabee. It turns out nvidia dumped the same B$ on Sony that they did on Microsoft back in they day.

Remember the original PS3 plan was to have the GPU made inhouse and have the CPU and GPU on the same die, or at least under the same heat spreader to decrease manufacturing costs. They did not initially want it to be the $600 behemoth that it ended up being. So if larrabee can boot an OS and run general purpose code just fine, then expect it to be built that way: Just a bunch of larrabee cores and no traditional "CPU".

I think generally it's heading that way, probably end up with multiple CPU and GPU cores on the same die. Can't remember who's got the multiple CPU cores and single GPU core on a die. The incredible shrinking computer springs to mind when you look at things like this.

atfu: I'm sure before holiday 2011 Microsoft will use a gig of GDDR5 (shorter traces FTW!); will license a R800 gpu to replace the R600 gpu; add an additional core or 3 to the cpu; bump up the l2 cache; increase the eDRAM to 16 or 24 megabytes...

It will still basically be the same system (like the DSi, which has four times the memory and more processing power than the DS lite). The only immediatly noticeable difference will be that all the games locked at 720p or 1080i will run at 1080p.

all the "cheap banned" xboxes are patched to be unhackable for homebrew though - if they were banned, they were on live, and any consoles on live were updated to the latest patched bootloader from which a downgrade is impossible.

Well seriuosly... I was thinking about getting a PS3 slim as a media center. Darn nice console. I think that gaming on consoles sucks though, except maybe sports games (that I hate), like that sexy-chick volleyball on the Xbox I played back then. ;)
Not very fond of the Xbox360 though. No Bluray, no WiFi, hard to replace the hard drive plus the online stuff costs money. The only good thing is you can homebrew-develop for it much easier...
