The smell of cinnamon
category: general [glöplog]
Gotta ask for some advice. I feel the smell of cinnamon without any cinnamon around. Is that a sign of mental illness?
or perhaps you just want a kanelbulle?
Perhaps I just want a psilodump, just that I have forgotten var jag har lagt den?
No, smell hallucination is a common thing. It's called "phantosmia", further info available here.
It says:
These conditions are generally thought to result from damage to the nervous tissues in the olfactory system. Such damage can result from viral infection, head trauma, surgery, and possibly exposure to certain toxins or use of certain drugs. Sometimes the condition is considered psychiatric in origin.

Be composed, it's very normal to feel the smell of cinnamon without any cinnamon around when somebody is angry because he must get up morning tomorrow and not go to the academy: english lesson and digital images processing.
Smell and taste hallucinations are bad signals in psychologycal diagnosis (if they don't have an organic origin). In fact they are common in paranoid schizophrenia with delusions of poisoning.
Rule 932, NEVER ask for medical advice on a Poeut forum!!

Paging Dr Adok.... Can Dr Adok come as quickly as he can to this forum to give his considered medical opinion!
Don't worry, this is probably not a sign of mental illness.
It does seem to happen very often with people that have recently contracted both bird flu and leukemia, though.

it's only the drugs.
DRUGS WILL OWN YOU§1!
Thank god you are not obsessed by shit smell, or by "lamers in the Assembly arena" (TM) fragrance. Cinnamon is just fine.
I often smell stuff that isn't there too.. all different kinds of things tho, not just one. I'm otherwise generally sane, so it doesn't trouble me. Actually, there is one thing that worries me, I can't tell the difference in smell between cow shit and parmesan cheese.. and i like parmesan cheese.
Having said that, if you're taking a lot of drugs, particularly psycadelics or weed, they do fuck you up after a while mentally. Happened to a couple of friends of mine.. one became a real genuine space cadet, permanently chilled out and happy (except if he drank.. then he became a real psycho) and the other became schitzophrenic.

"Olfactory hallucinations are occasionally a symptom of a brain tumor, so you need to bring this problem to the attention of a neurologist immediately."

Cinnamon would be a nice thing to smell. Mmm..
Interesting are the cases of people who smell things when they listen to specific words. Was it called synesthesia or something?

That happens? SHIT! Anyone here with it? SHIT SHIT SHIT!
I've heard that the meaning of the words have no logical connection with the smells. Those people have a bad time during conversations, e.g. they go for a dinner and someone mentions "strawberries" and they smell shit ;P
And search for synesthesia in wikipedia. I know see that it's also about people who associate colors, sound tones or tastes together (I don't see about smell, but perhaps I have taste in mind. Even worse to taste than smell shit ;P).
Phantom smells can be the first sign of a brain tumor.
yeah, nitro, are they over for now?
the scary part is that he turn's to pouet for medical advice!
ekoli: If *that* isn't alone a sign of brain damage!
Is your handle referring to the deadly bacteria?
