Are cracktros becoming obselete in the demoscene?
category: general [glöplog]
The demoscene has moved away from effect based demos (let alone records) for several years now. This was an ongoing process and was seriously sped up by the introduction of 3d accelerators. Coding a demo today does not mean anymore that you need mad optimization skills to keep up with your peers, a lot of that work has been moved to libraries. The last resort of pure code show-off is size optimizing.
In the old days, demos meant impressive code. It has been widely accepted that this is not the case anymore.
With the release of oldschool demomaker and other tools, it becomes more and more feasable to create stunning demos without writing a single line of code. Even the holy bastion of size optimizing is threatened by moving a lot of effort to the designer.
What is your opinion on that issue? Is the demoscene ready to embrace pure tool based demos, created only by a team of graficians and musicians? Will a separate tool-developer scene evolve as a supporting sub-movement to the demoscene? Does the tool based approach pose the danger of the commercialization of the demoscene? (The tool creators may realize a commercial potential in their creations)
In my opinion the whole tool issue is a natural progression of the demo scene. However, I believe the tools should be openened so that people can add their own extensions and help improving them.
P.s.: OMG WHAT WILL WE DO, WE DONT GET LEECH SLOTS ANYMORE FROM SITES IF WAREZ D00DS LEARSN TO USE OLDSKOOL DEMOMAKER!!!111

wait, warez d00ds can learn?

hahahaha ;-)
oh yeah, and i suspect this only affects scenes with modern powerful hardware... which is probably why i'm still an Amiga scener ;-)
this is great news! First fire, now tools. Its only a matter of time before the scene discovers sanitation!
psonice: we need sanitation NOW.. there is that much shit floating around!
or sanitary
OMG ROLF
the demo maker sucks, i've never been a fan of these "oldskool" style demo's anyway, seems people just can't devise their own effects.
i guess it might be a good thing, it makes real coding more of an art... "wow dude, which tool did you use to make that!!??".

fuckings to fuckers
and shittings to sanitation
and shittings to sanitation
sanitation? How about just deciding at your own party that you preview the demos and disqualify everything that isn't good enough?
I like shit, please don't sanitize.
radiantx: how about just making a scrap-compo where you can move everything into?
Psychad: How about a seporate demomaker-democompo for next Deadline?
radiantx: that was supposed to be a secret. Let's just hope Moppi or Farbrausch gets to upset by that then ;)
SATAN
I personally think it's best just not to talk about it and let those modern degenerates who still think they need to pull off the school of old without having the experience to go with it die out. Some may escape that what I'd call the "Razor-grip" (they started it) and some will be left without attention, except for perhaps their own circle-jerkin' kind.
Perhaps they could take a look at what the Fairlight guys are doing.

what are we doing? :P
kb wtf is that? i didn't know there were felt-tip pens in the 3rd reich - and this surely doesnt look like a feather writing... fake?
OKKIE AND HIS OLDE CREEPY SHOPPE ARE OBSOLETE FOR SURE SIR!!!1111
it doesn't have to be fake... maybe he just didn't get the chance to ask his idol for a signature until after the third reich ended? who knows...
und sie hatten keine schlecht angeschnittenen polaroids. 707
yes, i agree that tools have to be open. but part of the spirit of the scene is to do stuff that is free.. there's like different scenes within the scene, i guess regular demos are going more and more towards the pure animation stage.. however there's still much that can be done with code in terms of creating cool new effects..
anyway, this is my philosophy and i'm already doing a semi-open tool/demomaker/visualization studio or whatever so that whoever feels like playing around with code can extend it with dll libraries.. (hopefully it has a somewhat sane API)
