MS just released Visual Studio 2005 and you can get the Express Editions for free for a limited time:

Seems they've included the full optimizing compiler (unlike the "standard edition" crap of former times); so with the Platform SDK and the DirectX SDK (or some OpenGL SDK) this sounds like the best freeware demomaker ever ;)

Only MFC, ATL, the whole web dork luxury nobody-needs-it-anyway stuff and all docs are missing, but who cares.

Yes, it's a great package. Now, if only they would enable addins so that Visual Assist would work... ;)

Yeah I tried the beta version on the way to Stockholm on the ferry, it pretty much knew all the tricks VA had but still... :)

When last i looked, vc6 produced smaller code'n'files (with same options) than vc7. Confirm or cancel this.

In past times, I tried out the beta edition until expiration and found a few bugs about compilation options.
(ex., option for turning off the security cookie didn't work)
I hope these problems are okay in the retail edition.

Now I'm mainly using the VC Toolkit 2003 with PlatformSDK. These are giving me satisfaction at present.
Are you wondering where the debugger is? Remember PlatformSDK is including delightful console debugger (cdb).
It's pretty good, so no visual debugger is needed at least for me.

isn't the GUI a lot slower than the old visual studio .net's IDE?

Can even anything be slower than VS.NET IDE? That's (2003) like the slowest IDE i've seen, on par with some pure-java-ones...

hitchhikr : i dont know if i've all tried, but it seemed that vc7 produced smaller exe than vc6 but this vc7 exe were less "compressable" than the other, but maybe i'm wrong (havent experienced a lot with newer than vc6 things :).
anyway i'm gonna try this 2005 tool

thanks for the hint kb. the beta's shortcomings (like no way to put common paths in the ide so you had to add them every new project) were already starting to annoy me. this thing seems nice.
