What gfx card do I need for next gen demos/games?

category: general [glöplog]

I think its time to upgrade my gfx card but I dont have much cash and I dont have much of a clue either. All I want is a card that will run the latest demos like Platic's Final Audition, ASD's last demos and the next gen games like Alan Wake and Call of Duty 2 and XBox 360 conversions etc.

What's my cheapest option? Any advice?
shane : gf6600gt is cheap as chips and will run all that stuff and comes highly recommended by me. i know smash has only praise for his one aswell. if you're interested i could sell you mine, as my desktop pc is sitting dormant at home now i'm at uni.
after the gf3 and the r9x00, the 6600 seems to be the new "scene standard". after that.. i dunno. x1800 or 7800?

i'm assuming, if you're upgrading, that your mobo has an agp slot, right? if so, any agp geforce 6600gt or 6800 (plain) card will give you good bang for the buck. if you do have a pci express slot, those cards also come in pci-e flavors, or you can check out the radeon x800gt, gto, and gto2. video card shopping is becoming a nightmare, with nvidia and ati using each other's high-end monikers for their low-end, and vice versa, so it's good to get suggestions.

well the nfo says that fair play to queen needs a 6800, so are they really very wise words? ;-)

Erm, obviously the 6600 series have the same features as the 6800s, they're just slower and cheaper. So obviously everything that runs on a 6800 will also run on a 6600, only slower.

Perhaps they meant to say '6800-featureset', or they thought the 6600 was too slow for the demo to be enjoyable, so they think a 6800 is required anyway.

Either way, not worth mentioning, really.
