you all know what i mean if i say that amiga zealots wants to generally boost any mediocre amiga demo because its amiga (just look at recent tbl demos) and then claim its the most impressive thing ever. you also know this is because they are retarded inbreed clueless morons.
so whats up with pc demoscene taking the same step? has the hangarounders learnt that you should applaud and scream to death for a 64k with a 3dscene in it? or a multilayered demo? just because people did applaud for the product, just because people did applaud aether ?
just look at asm prod pages, mediocre / average, even quite good stuff being pushed up by visitors and lamers to become legendary productions, i bet nobody will remember any of the winning asm productions next year (except the creators).

Demomakers have a choice. They don't need to use Amigas or code in a few bytes, so if their prods look shit it's their own fault! I hate this "It looks shit, but hey it's only 4k" attitude.

I don't care to comment on the main point of this thread, since I don't follow the PC scene, but a lot of people judge demos within their context.
People producing Amiga demos will be more able to appreciate how difficult it is to do certain things on the Amiga and take that into account when judging a demo or an effect. A case in point is the voxels in TBL's latest demo. They aren't the most beautiful voxels in the world (although they did look better in some scenes than others), but a lot of Amiga coders will appreciate the effort behind the effect, and therefore appreciate it more than someone who has no idea about it and judges it purely on aesthetics (in which case they might as well be watching an animation and not a demo...). This doesn't make the people who DO appreciate such things 'morons' it just means they have a different context from which they judge the relative merits of the effects.
This is presumably also why Shane doesn't appreciate size-limited categories. He cannot code, he has no interest in code, and therefore has no appreciation for coding. Other people will look at a 256byte intro and have some idea of how hard it is to make the effect on the screen in 256 bytes. So who is the moron? The guy that judges the 256 byte intro by the same standards he would judge a 20Mb demo, or the guy that appreciates the talents of a coder managing to squeeze an effect into the tiniest space? true classics are absolutely few and far between. thats the point of "classics" isnt it? in fact the last real classic 64k i can think of was in 2000 - heaven 7 or the product. so dont call something the best evah straight away, see how you feel in 2 years or something when you can see what impact it had.
oh, but just because it's not definately a true classic doesnt prevent you from liking something. and hopefully the presence or lack of hype wont influence whether you like it or not either, unless you're some kind of sheep.

There are other reasons for making demos than to do the best you can possibly do. I know thats the main reason, but its not the only one.
I've made quite a few demos that didn't really stretch either the computer or my programming skills to the limit, but I made them because it was fun and I enjoyed doing it. Sometimes i've been coding stupid demos with Dr. Doom and laughed so hard my sides were hurting. With those demos, I don't care how many thumb-downs I get, I did it for the fun of it and because I enjoy demo coding even when its not "cutting edge" (well, my skills are nowhere near "cutting edge" but you know what I mean).

Bullshit. Some hardwares and competitions have limited capabilities. E.g. you don't expect to get 24bpp from GameBoy. It depends what you appreciate. Demos aren't beautiful effects only but good code too. Small code *is* one of good code's sides. And Conspiracy's prods *are* good, except they're slow.
Same with flybies. Most of DOS prods have their own engine, no OGL/DX crap, so writing about "flybies are bad" is somewhat stupid.

We (the mac demoscene) had 2 demos in the demo compo at asm. Zplex had... um... 0? So, what's up with Zplex? Is he as big a lamer as Shane? Is he a bigger lamer? Do we care?
Better question: who the fuck cares what fucking platform it was, it's about making demos and releasing things for people to enjoy. If they don't, and you had fun making the demo, it still rules. If they do, and you didn't have fun making the demo, it still sucks.
Anyone thinking the scene is about making demos for their personal enjoyment needs to go fuck themselves, hard, with a rusty machete.
(perhaps someone could put that sentence into a language where 'their' could be less ambiguous. In this case, the object (personal enjoyment) is supposed to be attached to the ignoramus doing the thinking, not the scene.)
