What do you use your computer for?
category: general [glöplog]
So many sceners and so few releases. The scene of today mostly seems like a group of random internet friends (and enemies), just like a lot of lonely "non-scene" people who use their computers chat on IRC or webchats. But at least non-sceners get to chat to women too.
So what do you "sceners" actually do with your computers and if you're not making demos, why be part of the scene? Why not find better ways to spend your time and if you're a demo fan, just log onto pouet once every few months to check out the releases?
I haven't worked on any demos for ages and meanwhile I'm starting to lose the point of it all, yet there are many of you who never work on demos but you still find some point to the "scene".
Just curious, not being insulting.

I'm going to guess porn
;o)

Much like video games, I can only assume developement time required for decent demos has increased over the past few years. Although there does seem to be fewer releases, I think it's foolish to think people aren't still hard at work on demo productions.
90% of my time at the computer is working.. at work. The rest.. studying, which will soon be finished, sometimes writing a tune or browsing the net a little. After the studying is over, i'll be making demos. Oh, and making demos is no reason to miss out on doing other things.
Demomaking is getting more and more expensive today. The average budget is around 48000€ for a medium range demo. But it can get 30x that for a big-party ranker, and 100x less for an oldschool demo.
in my case most of this development budget is spent for naked chicks serving all my needs...
shane, could you let me know your current email address please
PORN AND CODE
perhaps i shouldnt answer this since i actually release stuff, but i use it to code and do gfx most of the time. since i mostly do demos for c64 it is still quite cheap for me to produce stuff, and cross development tools have cut the production time needed.
i do nothing.. i admit it..
darkus : you should be writing me that fackin' tune! :)
Ehh ... Been coding 6-8 hours the last six days. Demo coding that is. We try to release about 3 demos per year and we are 6-7 people working. Why does it take time? Cos we work 40 hours/week on our normal jobs, have girlfriends, play in bands, drink with our friends, watch movies and sleep too.
Why hang out at Poüet? Well, to keep the spirit up I guess.

para: yeah i got the email, i`ll reply soon! (been camping a few days here and there lately) ..
Code and communication. And I do think I've released a fair amount of stuff.. with more of it coming soon >:)
my computer uses me.
my computer is only a nice power supply for a tablelamp with the strange shape of a monitor
I would same developing time for intros has gone up, but for demos it is about the same. sure, the demos are perhaps more technicly advanced but the tools available are also better.. and we have api's nowadays too.
We made a demo for this years assembly and even if we're never been cutting edge or anything (at lease we don't think so), the time developing it has been the same as for our oldest demos from around 1995 (software rendering etc).
What do I do with my spare time? Surf the web, chat the irc and code... and paint the house :)

Spamming on Pouet and reading other people's rants.
Studying and communicating (much cheaper than phone) mostly. Occasionally making music. Oh yeah and some work too :)
watching southpark, playing online poker, surfing web-papers and communicating.
i'm drooling at my computer most of the time. (i have a mac)
it's not like a computer is something special .. for me it's like breathing .. most of the stuff i do is related to computers. even dj'ing and such, nowadays!
I rarely use my computer these days. They stole my life..

Wo,. I had a diferrent thing in my mind when I wrote this brief line. I didn't even noticed it says that! I forgot some context in between. Some other people stole my life, which used (and will use) to be computers..
