Mac Demo Competition!
category: general [glöplog]
psonice: When I bought my mac it was mainly because I couldnt find an equivilant pc at the same price. Thats all Im saying. Im not going to take part in another flamewar and Im not going to force anyone to use, or even like, mac. Hey, I use pc's aswell, just not as desktops. :)
Macs cheaper? Really depends on how you look at it, but i'd say that in general they're not. If you consider that a decent mac is pretty well specified, they're not bad value for money compared to a pc. And if you consider that the OS (and usually other stuff) is included in the price, it looks better.
Having said that, when i bought my powerbook (in hong kong) i worked out that it was cheaper to fly to hong kong, buy the laptop, and fly back, than buying it in england. So there definately IS a case there for apple to answer.

miptex: i had a lot of problems finding a pc laptop that did what i wanted at a reasonable price too. The powerbook was actually cheaper than equivalent pc laptops, at least in hong kong.
i would like to say few words. i have used macs now for almost year and i totally love them! mac SI TEH FUTUER!
can't really say that macs are EXPENSIVE, in fact they're quite cheap - at least the laptops... look, i know it's all fine and dandy to talk shit about macs, it's kinda like tradition! but uh, there's a whole bunch of people that need a visit to this clue shoppe thing i hear so much about.
it's so easy to go around saying random shit than actually making sense, and pouet is proof!

one button-mouse tells it all:D
I thought this was about a demo competition
bad gui design that needs more than one mouse-button tells it all! :D
Anyway, back on topic. Rules and info page has been updated, shouldn't be anything that has any major impact on anyone, but it's probably wise to read it if you're entering. Also the competition has a new name: Rushed Metal.

miptex: so being a bad shopper makes apples more cheaper than pc desktops? Er, right. This says more about you than the awesomeness of macs ;)
psonice: bad gui to some, extra functionality to others. Sometimes it seems that having to use keycombos+mouseclick is merely compensating for the lack of buttons ;)
Anyway, I've grown far more lenient on macs since the mac mini was introduced. God knows when I'll buy one :)

lang: err bad gui? The idea of the whole 1-button mouse design thing is that you can do everything you need to just using the one button, which is great for novices, and a sign of good gui design if anything. You can do things faster using keyboard + mouse, also good design, and the way i personally work. Or you can plug a 3 button mouse with scrollwheel and use that just like you would on a pc if thats what you prefer. Flexibility see.. another sign of good design. I think a lot of people are missing the point that the 1-button mouse is just one option, and think it's forced on you by apple.
I meant that some people consider a multibutton-ready interface is considered bad by some -like the apple people who just love their single-button hockey puck.
You can do quite a bit of single button madness with a multi-button mouse as well, not really the point. Considering the single button mouse comes per default with just about any apple machine, I'd say it's pretty forced. Almost every machead out here uses a multi-button mouse -which means that savvy users have to shell out for two mice. That's what I like about the mac mini as well -none of that nonsense.
All a matter of preference, really. I prefer having at least 4 buttons on my mouse (preferably mapped to my own tastes)

@lang: i suppose you meant it in jest when you talked about eventually buying a mac mini, but in case you didn't, here's an interesting story for you:
a friend of mine ordered a mac mini in order to use it as a media center pc. he bought a m-audio transit usb for digital output and an additional usb hub for mouse and keyboard. at that time, i was slighly amused by the fact that every 2nd-3rd time (in fact it was quite non-deteministic, but this is a good mean value) his keyboard was not recognized during the boot phase, so that he eventually had to pull the usb-plug of the keyboard and reinsert it into another slot. at some point he installed the drivers for the external sound card (which was, as you should keep in mind, also an usb device), and it worked, but only till the next reboot; then, the system claimed his card to be gone...and dindn't let him revive the card via audio driver reinstall. well, the story goes on and on like this; for example, at some point he tried to play back a HDTV-clip, and saw it being shown with 8 fps. We upgraded to MacOS 10.4, thinking that some of the problems could at least be alleviated by the switch to the new version, but we were wrong (and the installation took ages); rather, the problems increased (for example VLC showed a 'nice' green border around every movie) and so he finally contacted apple for instructions on how to return the cuckoo's egg. about 1 week later, c't had an article about mac mini and its use as a media center pc and - you name it - the results were quite devastating if you read the article closely. Many problems were confirmed (eg the "not enough horsepower for HDTV" issue), and many others stated (like the low quality of the video out). i suggest to read the article for anyone interested.
well, i can not say much about mac's laptops like the powerbook, but in the case of a mac mini - based on the problems i described - i would strongly discourage to purchase it.

Oh, I certainly didn't mean that in jest.
I do not intend to use it as a media centre per se. I'm far more interested in the concept of being able to tinker with a macOSX machine at a very low fee and little deskspace. If it doesn't appeal, it can always serve as a makeshift pedestial for my dreamcast ;)

Apple had fucking pirateflags outside their office!! People can critizise Apple all they want, two facts still remain. I love my iBook and they had fucking pirateflags outside their office!!
Can I interrupt the flamewar for a sec?
So who's doing stuff for the compo?

You're just starting one, because the answer is probably going to be "nobody" :|
(fondly recalling the mac debacle before BP04)

Damn I'm sure glad I'm a mac user, because I'm such a lush, I get drunk pretty much every day, and I don't think I could handle more than one mouse button.

Nice to see some positive thinking there :)
Actually, I started the compo because there WAS interest in entering one. People are actually working on stuff to. As to how many actual entries there will be, we'll have to wait a couple of weeks to find out.

i'm doing a demo!
psionice: I'm just a ruddy pessimist -time to start cracking jokes about the xbox being huge :)
If I find the time I'll sure do something for the compo. All that is released for the mac is either total crap or remakes of pc demos, it's time too get some original mac releases out and I find this compo a great starting point for that!
oh, concerning the war.. Let it rest my friends, It's one of these that will never lead too anything more constructive then word bashing and you all knew about that running retard and arguing on the internet...... :)

Apple hasn't made anything worth buying since the Apple II.
ekoli: I'm not so sure on the lack of quality releases. I seem to remember a page somewhere with a load of old mac demos that looked pretty good. Those were OLD though.. the recent stuff has generally been either poor, cross-platform, or a port. And the mac scene seems very quiet to me compared to what it should be, which is what lead me to suggest a compo in the first place :)
Good luck with finding the time anyway!

For a long time, I didn't think the Mac had *any* demo scene at all. That, and the expense put me off until recently. I didn't even get my Mini with that in mind, but it is kind of nice to find even the low level of activity that is there.
And more prods would be cool, good luck :-)

i use a mac and couldn't live without my 4 buttons + wheel.
and i guess the spöntz thingy is ok for the compo? :) (it's mainly about just releasing something at least after all :)
+hugs to skrbl.
