Which reminds me... I still have the Assembly Fantasy Console Demo 2023 prize money "resting" in my account. Someone should take that off me and do something with it :/

Previous Asm Winter my speech was approximately ”Better voting behavior than in parliamentary elections last week, since nazis didn’t win, or at least none of the known nazis.”

we once won a 4K gamer monitor.. sold it to a random finnish scener for 100 bucks or so... then bought 100 euro worth of lottery tickets in the hope that we'd end up with a pink Lamborghini each, but unfortunately we only won like 10 euro... which we used for lottery tickets again, but unfortunately still no Lamborghini
saved for the entrance fee of the next edition. at least that's what i was telling myself.
Used for REN XMas

I had a very outdated PC when we made Gateways, so the PC we won from it was my workhorse for several years after that. It was actually fun to see Gateways run at "full speed" for the first time... at the compo.

Bought a skateboard from my Takeover ‘99 prize money. Spent a bunch of it on beer.

Limp Ninja once fed Breakpoint gimbap from their Euskal winnings

I wonder what happened to the SGI workstation that was the prize at Assembly one year in the 90s...

As we all know »demoscene is all about the money™«, so I invested my whole prize waelth in highly risky hedge funds to finance my elite-lifestyle! ;o)

At Asm 2020 (online), there was no promise of prize money. The prize ceremony was online, so I didn't get to go there or receive a diploma or anything. Nothing arrived in the mail, nor did I even get an email. So I thought in the end nothing was given out that year.

In 2021, however, when filing for 2020 taxes, I finally noticed that Assembly Organizing at some point had just silently paid 300e to my bank account. Found the process a bit strange, but thanks - I guess.

We were going to use the prize money from euskal06 to fund the trip back home (gas and tolls) but the orgas found out we namevoted each other and left us with nothing. We apologized, but since then the iberian scene never reunited. 2006 was a dark year for portuguese demoscene.

On a more positive note, our gfx guy bought a wacom from the prize money won at the gathering 98. That lead to him quitting graphics and started organising inércia demoparty, somehow.

Back in the day at Assembly it was all sorts of sponsor-dumped stuff like compilers, mobos and CPUs, so never really got any actual money. Managed to sell at least some of that stuff at a heavy discount.

All that prize money from The Gathering 1998 - 2004 was spent on rent, electricity bills and beer, in addition to a luxury item or two, such as new loudspeakers.
In more recent years any cash prizes have become spending money for the next party trip abroad and / or ratzeputz.

Some memorable non-cash prizes:

  • Cardboard box with Arcane's name on it (1st prize, demo compo at Kindergarden 1997), abandoned at the party place.
  • Children's comic about horses (MFX+Kewlers bday party 2003) brought back to Norway. Luckily the customs officer who checked my bag didn't notice the very suspicious-looking horse candy that came with it.
  • Pentium machine (Convention 1997) became my first ever "modern" PC for a while when I finally got hold of a screen, but at that point it wasn't very modern anymore.
  • Porn mag (bootblock compo at FAP 2014) was lost at Skeneklubi almost immediately after receiving it. :-( (The accompanying prosecco and cash came to good use, though).
  • CD with the OST for Bride of Chucky (intro compo at Kindergarden 1998) was listened to quite a lot for several years.
  • AmyItx (Datastorm 2018) is probably the subjectively most valuable item I've ever won, absolutely amazing prize. Still have it, of course, but haven't used it in a while. :-/
  • Revolt! radio transmitter (Solskogen 2018) tested for a while, then given to lug00ber since he works for a broadcaster.
  • Various trophies passed on to collaborators who appreciate them more. (Although I still have some of my oldest TG trophies and a TRSAC duck somewhere in the attic).
  • Revision messenger bag (2019, traded it from Ferris' 64k prize with something from my 64k prize) in regular use to this day. Excellent German quality.
  • Handheld NES emulator thingie (1st prize in the Masterblaster compo at Zymosis Dev Summit 2023) passed on to Black Valley where it was handed out as a prize this summer.
In 2008, Gargaj et al were giving out these Nvidia-sponsored "demoboxes" (desktop PCs with GeForce 8800) to people who promised to make something for NVScene. I applied for one but didn't get it, which was perfectly reasonable, since I could easily afford to buy a similar machine myself, which I then did, though I ended up not going to NVScene.

I did go to Function, where I won a demobox, which I then donated to Kindergarden, where I won it again, so I could donate it to the winner of the democompo, which was announced immediately afterwards.
