Renoise users: please list your painpoints, workflow issues, missing features, small improvements etc that you'd like to have in Renoise?

category: music [glöplog]
Hi, I wanna talk to y'all about Renoise.

What are your painpoints with Renoise - what is slower than it should be, what's missing a midimapping or a shortcut or a menu entry? What requires 5 or 15 clicks to do, but should be a shortcut?

What was missing when you moved from (your preferred tracker) to Renoise?

What was your first question(or several) when moving to Renoise, and what were you told can never happen or isn't on their to-do-list?

Yes, Renoise is pretty good, but there are certainly things missing. i'd like to find out what is missing from Renoise in your opinion. It could be a small thing, like not having enough shortcuts for selecting Instruments in the Instrument Box, or a larger thing (like being able to freeze + flatten a track to a new track and have it play while the original is muted).. or anything else.

I'm basically looking for any and all ideas, feature suggestions, nice tweaks, workflow issues, and wanna see if they can be scripted into Renoise. My Renoise tool currently has 900+ functions and I wanna keep going.

So spill them beans. Thanks!

Yours,
Esa aka Lackluster

as an example, a ModPlugTracker user had been, for years (since Renoise 2.8) wondering about why there's no "Note Interpolation" shortcut in Renoise. I wrote it as a midimapping and as a keybind.

(my work into writing Paketti started with making as many ImpulseTracker shortcuts available as possible, and I'm still on the same road)

Well I run into this bug a couple of times a week but I guess it isn't fixable:

It would be nice if they also ported Redux to Linux ARM just like they did with Renoise.

just made separate sample loaders (for individual samples + drumkits) that automatically have pitchbend, cutoff, resonance, cutoff LFO Amount & Cutoff LFO Frequency, Overdrive, Volume LFO Amount, Volume LFO Frequency automapped.

and wrote scripts for "Selected Instrument Macro 1...8" midimappings. so this means you can load up a sample, or multiple samples into a drumkit, or cleanly render a track into a sample, or isolate a segment of a sample to a new sample, and all four instances of new instrument creation will have those automatically set up.

am looking for additional ideas as to how to tweak these things. i think the selected instrument macro 1...8 was pretty crucial to have, should be there in Renoise natively. no point in just binding one midiknob to one specific instrument (unless if that's what you want), would rather have "automapping" like this.

More often I find it difficult to see in which track I am currently working in the pattern view / scopes pane / pattern sequence matrix. Some of this can probably be fixed with the color scheme, but I would prefer it being more pronounced in general.

fiveofive - ok, this might be of interest, i wrote a script that, when you edit mode is open, then highlights the channel you are on (background). so it makes the record-mode easier to discern.
there's 3 modes of it - one is the regular editmode (those pale red corners). one is "selected track highlight" and the third one is "highlight everything while editmode is on"

looks like this

it is for pattern editor, and i'm not sure if scopes pane/ pattern sequence matrix can have stuff there. let me know if this is at all what you're going for.

Looks pretty awesome to me! :-)

And yes, I don't see why having the same select track highlight mode on scopes panel and pattern sequence matrix wouldn't be just as awesome. I think all this is helpful for finding things more easily and quickly. Getting older after all!

I think the graphical automation toolset is pretty wonky. It feels like it is completely separate from the pattern editor. You have automation values that live in pattern editor and in the graphical section at the same time, and they are not related, but they can automate same things. It is easy to do changes to the graphical editor and forget about their existance. Now when you start copying and pasting patterns around you suddenly realize that some automation values got carried to your patterns although you did not intend to do that because the automation values are hidden in the graphical automation menu system deep down and not directly visible in the pattern editor.

It would be nice to have some kind of optional automation columns next to your tracks (like effect columns) where you would see the automation curve of the values at all times, and then you would be able to directly edit it with a mouse or quickly open the graphical editor tied to the automated value. The automation column could have its curve or points running vertically down and automation values would increase from left to right.

fiveofive i got the track scope highlight working too, it was just a setting. the pattern matrix doesn't seem to yet support it.

there's a little video here

wabe: i wrote these menu entries + midimappings for automation curve drawing. it uses logic: if there's panning or pitch, then it starts from the middle, if it's a regular thing, it starts from the bottom, etc - here's a little video.

it's been suggested i should do scaling, so that's on my todo-list.

fiveofive glad to hear it! any other specific issues or workflow painpoints or "too many clicks to accomplish something simple"? i'm all ears.

btw , here's something complex..

this opens a dialog that lets you automatically create
- 16 new tracks
- 16 new instruments
- the tracks are named after the selected midi_device and selected midi_device channel.
- the instruments are named after the selected midi_device and selected midi_device channel.
- if you select plugins (au,vst,vst3), they are loaded onto the instruments in question
- if you select an output midi device, each instrument will have an output midi device + channel set
- the note columns visible and effect columns visible can be set by the user
- whether volume, delay, panning + sample fx columns are visible or not, user-settable
- automatic population + naming + assigning of send devices to each of the 16 tracks (you have 10 send tracks? you have 10 sends in each of the 16 tracks, mapped 1...10 and named accordingly
- user decides whether each channel has an line-input device
- user decides whether tracks are collapsed or uncollapsed
- user decides whether plugins loaded have external editors displaying.

wow that's a mouthful
i call it the Paketti MIDI Populator

fiveofive is there some way to contact you? i could do a 1-on-1 call and show some of Paketti's features and get a discussion going as to what else to add.
my email is esaruoho@icloud.com if that helps.

fiveofive it gets better :)

anyway, i opened up a discord for Paketti (and my music projects), it's at

for better easier conversations and being bombarded with features + improvements + fixes on the #paketti channel.

this lets you use +10/-10/+100/-100 to control slice start + slice end. while viewing the slice.

This is a minor issue, and more personal preference, that however I can not change (or I'm holding it wrong).

I like to enter numbers with the num block on my keyboard. Especially within the pattern editor in editing mode. It's kinda annoying to type a zero and suddenly my workflow is completely broken: Anything vanishes and instead the sample editor is shown. So confusing. I just wanted to edit an effect column! Now... where was I again...
It would be nice, if that could be toggled by a settings switch (maybe it is and I'm just blind) - and as I said: Only when in pattern editing mode.

But: Minor issue really - just after 30min I'm used to it again.
