emulating amiga demos?
category: general [glöplog]
Finding a working Amiga and all the parts to them is hard in the middle of nowhere. Is there a good way 2 emulate amiga demos that aren't already uploaded onto yt? lol
UAE is the way to go. At least Winuae should work even without downloading a kickstart rom.
there's also https://classicwb.abime.net/ if you want to download a preinstalled workbench with stuff setup... should get you up and running pretty much instantly.
@farfar:
Cheers man for the link =). I was using it rather occasionally "a couple of years ago" and since then - rather forgot its existence..;).

You still need Kickstart ROM files and Workbench ADFs before you can use WinUAE or ClassicWB, they will not function without them.
Amiga Forever by Cloanto is the usual go-to product for these essential files that must be paid for, or it's illegal.
@farfar: The ClassicWB setups are preinstalled, but lacking the essential files from the Workbench disks, you'll need to provide those yourself and follow the installation routine for ClassicWB.

WinUAE comes with the AROS free rom built-in, if you're running some trackmos or single files without system stuff that might work fine. I just watched all of 'Mental Hangover' with it enabled.
I guess you could look around the interwebs a bit for kickstart files or head over to cloanto.com which is what I did many years ago :)
search for denise emulator
this is the future of commodore emulation
plays even c64 demos accurat - almost everything i threw at it
( c64 / amiga emulator in one )

I prefer the Kickstarts I grew up with on my real A500/A1200, so Amiga Forever, as much as I despise its awful frontend, I use for the ROMs. And yes, I do know that Cloanto have adapted the ROMs by sticking their name all over them.
You don't need Workbench for WinUAE to function. You can easily find something like kick13.rom on the interwebs
No, you don't NEED Workbench for WinUAE to work and for floppy A500 trackmos, but since I deal with WHDLoad games and higher-end HDD AGA demos as well, I found ClassicWB to be a lifesaver!
@emod: thx for the workbench link lol. definitely gonna check it out :)

Cheapest way to get legal roms from Cloanto:

I second this, a neat way of getting the official legal Kickstart ROMs, and you don't have to bother with their rubbish AF interface for the games, etc.
I second everyone in the thread! 4mat, danLemon and tFt know what's up.
The only thing I can add is that if you didn't use WB much BITD, well demos rarely come with icons so you'll end up CDing and LISTing in the Shell anyway. And IDK any demo that actually requires a WB environment. So setting up WB should be for your own enjoyment, try some fun programs from Aminet, WHDLoad games, etc.
The only way to make it easier than install emu, create HDD directory, start demos from command line could possibly be AmigaLive (and add the files to its included FS-UAE).
Some demos come in LHA archives. If you unpack these using e.g. 7zip, you may have to type Protect <executable> rweds to set the executable flag of the emulated file system. (If you install WB, you can decompress the demos in the Amiga using the LHA command from Aminet).

@Photon:
I've never had to unpack LHA archives to an HDD volume nor set executable flags, ever, when I emulate Amiga HDD demos. Maybe back in the day when I was tinkering with unwieldly large HDD files that were prone to corruption, but now I use WinUAE for handling them, as Toni Wilen has made them as accessible as ordinary HDD volumes in that emulator! Either point to the LHA archive in the configuration for each demo, or just do what I did and make your own launcher and make the whole process automatic.
