Demosplash 2023 - 3-4 November 2023

category: general [glöplog]

The thirteenth annual Demosplash will be held 3-4 November 2023 at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA and online via SceneSat and Twitch. Join us for classic demo screenings, informative talks, retro gaming, and of course compos. This year's theme is "Synthesized", emphasizing the importance of music to the demoscene.

In light of that, we're especially interested in talks relating to chiptunes, synthesizers, and other topics relating to music and the demoscene. If you'd like a chance to speak about a demoscene-adjacent topic remotely or in person at Demosplash this year, please e-mail us at organizers@demosplash.org with a description of the talk you would like to give.

Ticket sales will be launching within the next few weeks for those interested in attending in person. As always, you can visit http://www.demosplash.org/ for the latest information on the event itself, ticketing, and more.

So, is the size-restricted category limited to 1K? Rule 3 and 5 seem to contradict each other.

3) The maximum uncompressed submission size is 1 KiB (1024 bytes).

5) Likewise, in the event we receive a huge number of size-constrained compo entries, we may further split this category or make another category for larger sizes (e.g., 4K, 64K, etc).

The current size-constrained category is limited to 1K. We had to draw the line somewhere, the intent of rule 5 was that if we got a large number of submissions to the modern demo/retro demo categories we might create a separate category of size-constrained demos (Maybe something like 1K < Demo Size <= 64), so that a 4K DOS demo isn't competing against a 10 megabyte Amiga AGA demo or something running on modern video cards.

Drawing the lines around what's retro and what isn't, what's size constrained and what isn't, etc. is tricky business, but we will do our best to be fair to all compo entrants.

Demosplash 2024 will be held Friday November 15 and Saturday November 16 at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA USA. We hope you'll join us for our 14th consecutive year of Demosplash, but if you can't attend in person you can still catch the action online thanks to our friends at SceneSat.

This year's theme is "Connected", so we'll be emphasiszing the role that BBSes, online services, and the early Internet held in the demoscene. On that note, if you'd like the chance to speak about a demoscene-adjacent topic (remotely or in-person) at Demosplash this year, please e-mail us at organizers@demosplash.org with a description of the talk you're interested in giving.

As always, you can visit http://www.demosplash.org/ for the latest information from the Demosplash team.
