The only issue I have with mastodon is hard to remember, ugly long ass links. This terrible design choice literally portrays Mastodon like a poorly organized zoo.
I am not optimistic Mastodon will truly replace Twitter, because it lacks the core aspect of Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube that informed their success: A true global community, where a user living in my house is as near as a user on the other side of the planet.
When I am on a different Mastodon server and want to interact, I get the message that I have to do that through my own server, which reminds me, that I am not a part of a global community, but a local one and I can only connect to others through the confines of my local one (host domain). Mastodon reflects the old "nationalized" philosophy of community building (including that each server is governed differently like nations are), which other social media platforms have left behind and thus became popular.

Can't we all just go back to IRC?!
Naaah, that would be too simple. Far worse, it might even work!

Too hard to post memes.

Three things, pick two. I for one had had enough of Twitter's "community" when Gamergate picked up momentum there.
Yeah, Mastodon will probably never "replace" Twitter. I will even concede that there may be cases where something like Twitter, where you need to get a message out to everyone in the world, is even needed.
But we also need smaller, real communities, that are manageable and self-managed. We need them for marginalized people who need a safe online space - which Twitter will never provide - and we need them for regular folks like me who have simply had enough of the nonsense of the information age.
Whether Mastodon will prove successful in providing that remains to be seen. I know there are issues in the fediverse, with people too far in the fringe even for Twitter popping up with their own instances to stir shit. But I do hope it succeeds, because it needs to succeed.
I think it is worth a try: https://mastodon.art/@titus_rabenauge
solhsa.com/temp/pouet_mastodon.csv - all posted addresses so far in a csv you can use to import into mastodon on one go (except for "pouet.me" ones, none of which seemed to work). Did not check if all of these work, but anyway, there you go..

(I truly hope Mastodon doesn't turn into Twitter, the drama over there is depressing)

I'm thinking of making a Mastodon account but I have no idea how to pick a good instance. How are you guys managing to do that?
@fizzer you start on mastodon.social, wave to friends, they invite you to their instance, you accept or not. https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/#migration
