What does Demosceners thinking about NFT?

What does "intellectually honest" mean?

Not deliberately using logical fallacies.

Name one.

We will just circle back and start over.

I don't think the climate-change argument should be used as the main goto argument against web3, because it uses a very emotional narrative, lacks nuance, hide the other relevant issues, and will probably lose relevance (if/when ETH makes the switch to PoS or if another competitor PoS chain takes precedence for web3 usage).

You don't think so.

Let's agree to disagree.

Have fun telling your children that in a few years, btw.

And this was ad hominem btw.

"Ad hominem" means attacking the person instead of their message.
added on the 2022-01-10 21:23:10 by fizzer fizzer
And anyway, spotting an ad hominem argument doesn't mean you're right and they're wrong.

Indeed it was not hominem per se.

It was not very nice or constructive either ;-)

And ad hominem isn't always a fallacy. Probably more rarely one that often reported

technically it was an ad liberi

You perfectly know Web3 is NOT what's killing the planet right now.

It's certainly one of the things killing the planet plus no one wants it except for "entrepreneurs" that wants to sell air to people.

Wullon: How is reminding each other that we owe the next generations the best we can give them rather than dystopia not constructive? Being nice isn't really a worthwhile goal in these kinds of discussions, and I don't think this was the tipping point for that in the first place...

saying that we're destroying the planet for the next generation is a repeating generational boomer thing. remember lead in fuel? nuclear bombs? acid rain? ozone layer?
Quote:
In the 1980s, scientists began to realize that ozone-depleting chemicals, such as chlorofluorocarbon (CFCs), were creating a thin spot—a hole—in the ozone layer over Antarctica. Through an international effort to decrease the use of CFCs, the ozone layer is starting to mend, and scientists believe it should mostly recover by the middle of the 21st century. This series of satellite images shows the ozone hole on the day of its maximum depth from 1979 through 2018.

It's repeating cos if you repeat it enough, it sometimes gets fixed. (But what would you know about effort...)

Can anyone that defends NFTs as a good thing try to explain what's so different compared to storing the transaction in a classical database? As far as I understand you just attach a binary blob to a transaction, without an open known protocol, and every company selling you NFTs creates that data as they see fit. If the company closes, then there's still no one to assure the validity of that data, right? Isn't that how it's supposed to work?

a classical database doesn't have tons of money (crypto-money earned by previous crypto-speculation) flowing into it thanks to an insane, hype-driven gold rush. if you remove the crypto- part from this it would more or less be the same thing or perhaps much better (because the platform wouldn't be hampered by all the crypto parts), but no-one would care and there would be no money in it.

Lol, this is legit one of the dumbest things ever posted here.

and that's the deal with NFTs. some positive things have actually come out of NFTs:
- some very talented artists who were previously unable to (or unwilling to do what was required in order to) make any money from their art are now making good money from their art, rather than trying to survive on the warmth of insta likes alone. i know some actual real life examples. that's a good thing! (i'll quietly ignore the majority who make fuck all, and basically line the pockets of opensea in the current equivalent of buying spades to dig for gold with).
- some 25 year olds speculated their trust fund and are now very rich (.. ok, good for them, not necessarily for society as a whole)
- now you can easily see all the people who bought one of those fucking apes (like they've all voluntarily signed some sort of register they should have all probably been on anyway)
- there's a slim chance those people might all move to cryptoland and the whole island will go lord of the flies and they'll all eat each other

.. but those undoubtedly positive things are not being driven by being built on crypto, they're being driven by the gold rush around it. the actual thing itself is massively flawed.

Don't forget the ones who never wanted to get involved but got their art stolen to the degree that DeviantArt now has an automated system to let you know that your art was stolen - it obviously can't do anything about it, and OpenSEA has been ignoring takedown requests, so you're fucked, but at least it tells you. I've seen artists quit posting art over this.

and dont forget that if you do still post your art on social platforms like insta, for free, for the fun of it, you now receive the attention of hundreds of bot posts to the tune of "love it! dm to promote on @buymyshit". well, its nice to be liked.

gargaj, that was my point. shit gets fixed! usually by a global, top-down, scientifically-sound initiative, not a bunch of nerds crying wolf because their GPUs get too expensive for christmas :P

...but anyway that's besides the point.

(also not saying there is no problem, as there's a larger sustainable energy problem -where cryptomining is only a fraction of- that humanity really needs to solve in the next two decades)
haha touché.. but i'm notoriously postponing with buying new hardware... waiting for those 40xx cards, you know ;)
@smash I know all that, I'm just trying to find some remotely realistic explanation to why it's good that's not "I sell drugs and this way I can generate NFTs and get a clean money transaction over it"... which is a "yes but actually no" kind of thing.
A few dozen artists do get more visibility like you say, but most people I saw pumping NFTs were actual big artists, which already made tons of money selling fart for thousands. This so-called decentralization is not decentralized at all (a few weeks ago Kazakhstan "The second-biggest country for bitcoin mining lost its internet access, taking as much as 15% of the network offline."), and doesn't survive without stuff like "Opensea"... which isn't open by any means.

Anyway...
