Your unpopular opinions about the scene
category: residue [glöplog]
the average oldschool sinescroller is:
1. mostly unreadable (too wobbly or artsy "font")
2. has boring text
3. should have a comporule limiting the effect to max. 10 seconds

Being a great demo coder doesn’t imply you are a great software developer.

And the other way around!
Being a great demo doesn't impy you are a great software.
No place for any kind of ideology in the demoscene.
The best are gives us something to think. Some of the best demos are political.
The best *art
gives me nostalgic memories of the demoscene and the reverse-engineering scene every time i open up every single PC intro (or amiga intro) . :)
but yeah some of the amiga intros might be a bit boring only because of the scroller or the animations might be repetitive..
and speaking of music i like v2m's so much , used in farbrausch demos :)

Well, it does imply it.. it just isn't necessarily the case. At all. :D
The scene has become too mainstream and too externally influenced.
While most of us reject the insanity that the copyright system has become (right to remix etc), we fully adhere to it.
We allow a US corporate to tell us what is acceptable art and what isn't (Twitch, YouTube). Scene communication has moved almost completely from non-commercial scene-run media (IRC, SceneSat, Pouet, Bitfellaz, demoscene.tv etc) to commercial solutions (Twitch Chat, Discord, Facebook, YouTube) in a way that has totally fractured the communication flows.
I want to be valued by fellow sceners, not by Unesco. While I welcome preservation efforts, I feel unwell if the scene these days is mostly represented by "historians".
And worst of all, the tendency of "If you have any different opinion or worldview than myself, I need to create a shitstorm to destroy you" has swapped over from Social Media into the scene. Suddenly people are dominating others no longer by either having the best releases, best skills or being a wonderful person, but by executing powers sourced elsewhere.
By trying to be inclusive in areas outside of our actual activities and to not hurt feelings, the scene has actually become more intolerant. The safe spaces created for some are the cages for others.

You know what? I'll bite. Please show us _one_ example where that actually happened.

"People pointing out that certain behaviour makes them uncomfortable or hurts them stops me from acting like a dick without consequences. it is actually I who is oppressed!"

#Demogate when?

If you refer to the misogynist hellhole that was/is #gamergate, hopefully never.
Yeah, probably never; most sceners are adults now who have lives and some experience in "other people exist", makes it harder to drum up an army of incels and stupid teenagers for your idiotic, butthurt "cause".

I think I know who you're talking about, and if it's that case, this is untrue. Said person has been banned from _one_ party (not "demoparties" as you so sneakily imply), and not because of any support towards any political party, but because he repeatedly issued hateful statements towards people (potentially) attending that demoparty, until it was decided that this kind of behavior is not welcome at the event.
It was mostly a joke (or my frustration of what happens with most communities, the patterns are the same). It can't happen for various reasons. Demoscene is not mainstream. Even #Doomgate never happened (the majority in Doomworld are either out of this or woke-leaning), it just made some people do their own Doom forum.
And the demoscener audience is different than the gamers audience.
Gamers are not elites, a lot of them are average or less. Most demosceners either feel elite or are doing better in life (with jobs, wives, etc) than the average gamer. And it won't accomplish anything anyway. Sorry for bad joke.
I just feel like an outlier here. And that's ok. I don't ask you to believe different things. Maybe things are the way they are. But something has changed. Demoscene is a microcosm, things will affect other more improtant places.
Also I don't believe gamergate was misogynistic incel movement. I know that most of the people on your bubble believe or perpetuate that. I am living in a different bubble and I accept there is mismatch with the bubbles, and I believe gamergate was the first pushback to something.

1) be an advocate for equality and respect for people regardless their race, age, gender
2) keep referring to not-so-zeitgeisty and not-so-progressive people as 'middle-aged white men' every time you pump out some argument against their conservative ideas
3) profit!

It's not a matter about "bubbles" and "beliefs", even if you so desperately need it to be so you can keep your mental cardboard house made out of all those piled up logical fallacies from crashing down onto you and burying you under all the cognitive dissonances you've haphazardly tried to stash away in the attic of your mind.
In case of #gg: I didn't need a bubble to pre-digest any information for me, like you apparently do. I was there. I've seen it unfold from the very first second on Twitter, I have read the pamphlets and "mission statements" (lol), out of some masochistic curiosity I even checked out the threads on 8chan where the whole ethics angle was spun, and lo and behold: It was just a bunch of fucking incels and a giant pile of misogyny, and there was _zero_ merit to _anything_ they said.
Who would have thought.

On this site, it's true 99% of the time.

Now I'm gonna bite lol. Pushback to WHAT? It's always vague reasoning like this. Give examples, what do you feel it pushed out against? You know that if you do, you'll get shit for it, I WONDER WHY THAT IS haha.
If you say 'it's about integrity in game journalism' I WILL boop your nose!
