Why are people organizing demoparties right now?
category: parties [glöplog]
I heard that question quite often during the last couple of weeks, and would like to explain:
You can not organize a "proper" demo party fully spontaneously. But a lot of sceners are suffering and want to, and some even need to, meet, as unlike for many in the outside world, it's the most important social bind they have.
This means if we just wait for the pandemic to be "over" (if that ever fully happens), you'd have to wait another 6-12 months to see a well-organized party again.
This is why during the last year multiple demoparties have been organized even when it was clear that most likely they would not take place.
We had a team of organizers preparing Under Deconstruction for end of December to then cancel it.
Then we had a team of organizers in Switzerland organize MountainBytes for February, who then cancelled it this week.
There is a team of organizers planning Outline for May, which very well may need to be cancelled.
Now there is a team planning onScene for Easter Weekend, knowing that is very well may need to be cancelled, too.
Personally, in parallel to doing onScene with my team, I am already planning Underground Conference for July. As this is an outdoor party, this is the first party of 2021 where I am actually pretty sure it's going to take place.
I hope this post made it clearer that just because lots of people put a lot of work and risk onto their shoulders by organizing demoparties right now it doesn't meant these people are irresponsible. We aren't idiots. We are just caring for what and for those we love.

MountainBytes can be considered postponed to next year :)

I'd be ok with that.
Yes, we should wait as long as government tells us to wait. That is always the right way!

I wonder how often you will return here, "Mr. CTO" aka Stefan Reich aka Vibrator and a lot of other fake nicks.
But good to see you're still a rebel figthing against authorities. *cough*
Seems like good thinking to me that organizers need to organize in order to eventually make parties happen again, even though their efforts might get cancelled by reality.
In a way, this reminds me of the demo-making process as an adult when real-life is against you. If you don't push little steps every now and then, you have lost already and will not see another release in due time.

I don't see anything wrong with planning an event and rescheduling during the circumstances. It's good to be prepared and flexible I reckon.

scamp: +1 for the effort to explain the rationale.

The clown made my day.
Welcome Back D4XX, do you want to tell us you're quitting the scene once more?

If you can sleep better with it, I'll be happy to do that. But which scene do you mean actually?
