Support research vs. corona by donating computation time to Folding@home?

category: general [glöplog]
Folding@home is a concept where you can make the idle time on your hardware (graphics and CPU) available to researchers trying to understand proteine folding. Their research adresses a number of diseases including the new SARS-COV.

I understand that many of you may have very strong hardware, so this might be an appropriate place to ask if you already know about this effort and whether you might be willing to support it :)

What do you think?

Team 238966 FTW!

We installed folding-at-home on our servers, cpu only then...and on a users client cpu/gpu.

Tried it recently but there was no option for Corona and it wasn't using my GPU.

I'm doing my part, but seem they are having issues with allocating work units.
see f@h forum
and overall even when folding in 'full' on my gpu's, they are not used to their full potential. i was expecting a way more mature project.

right now with 5 gpu, 4 are idle and only one actually compute

I think they do not have a dedicated option for corona - just select "any disease".
They have a statement for corona-related research here:linky
It also reads like 'we're setting up more simulations now, so you might experience idle time'

Joined the effort, but can't seem to enable my GPU on Ubuntu 19.10... :/

The F@H client seems rather old. The control and viewer .deb don't even install due to missing Python2 packages.
Maybe BOINC is a better choice?

The BOINC project adressing corona is Rosetta Code (see forum thread). However, it does not use my graphics hardware either ('Project has no application for NVidia GPU') :/

Anyone else read the "When" option as "Only when I die" ?

For german people there will be a Hackathon around solutions for problems that arose due to the corona-crisis coming up:
https://www.bundesregierung.de/breg-de/themen/coronavirus/wir-vs-virus-1731968

It´s not about finding a cure, though, i think.
yeah, have been running it for a while aswell

Nice, I assigned myself to group 238966 (deinetickets.de) as well.
Happy folding :D

Coronavirus Work Units are CPU Project. WUs are coming faster when you use "Medium Power" (at least this is in my config the case)

Guys..this is awesome: 264 Workunits!
We rank now on Place 6.904 of 238.843 Teams!
All of my friends here who didnt install the client yet:
please do so, its easy and configures itself.

Download it at
https://foldingathome.org/start-folding/ install, add Team Number 238966 and start folding. The system may take a few hours until you get workunits, but be sure you will get some.

Help scientists around the world, just by letting your machine calculate.<3

Coronavirus Work Units are CPU Project.

That was communicated, but right nao it is the other way round. My CPU is sitting idle most of the time, and when it gets a work unit, it is in most cases for cancer research.

They seem to have written CUDA kernels in the meantime, and my GPUs are working on Corona related projects most of the time.

Great that they have fixed the stats page, alternative representation of stats is found here:
https://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_list.php?s=
Offical stats are more recent and thus preferred.

Happy folding everyone :b

People are so afraid of losing their worthless lives that it is just pathetic. One day they think only about themselves and the other they act like they're able to do something important by simply downloading some stupid app which doubtfully will have any effect on the whole situation. Oh yeah, let's run our PCs to their limits, we will save the world! Mass stupidity in all its glory... But how about every one of these fools will take the money which will be wasted on electricity and bandwidth and just give them to those people who in reality actually know what they're doing and need them the most??? Nope! Pouring resources into the least useful and the most poseurish campaign is all what the crowd can do. Welp...

And the last thing I will say. At first I didn't want to waste my time and reply to you, because you and people like you are not worth it at all. "excuse me?" he mumbles here... Get lost! That's what I wanted to say at first, but decided to ridicule all this bullshit instead just because I'm so sick of this immense idiocy, yet nothing will change, sadly.

first i wanted to reply with a simple "fuck you", but then i thought that it would a bit harsh attacking some uneducated troll with such a simple phrase, but then on the other hand i came to the conclusion that "fuck off" fits better.

to the party pooper,
nah, you got that wrong man. It is all really just an excuse to watch those gpu fans spin... :b The pc is really just a space heater, because I got electric heating anyway and like 3 deg Celsius outside... and get a life, will ya?!

well...
maybe if you put the tone of it aside that guy is not that wrong after all...
i mean if the folding@home project will be of any real help in the corona matter is at least questionable, its more about the fact that we try to help and do something in this kind of situation. im sure if we knew how and where we could spend the money/resources we "waste" on electricity this way more effectively, we would do it (at least most of us).
but i really dont have a clue how to do that and i guess neither do the most of you and this is how things are.
in the end getting people to care at all might be of much of more importance than getting them to care in the most efficient way possible. stay healthy.
