Notable Glenz

category: general [glöplog]
From what I've managed to dig up, glenz was originally made by Mårten Björkman, aka Celebrandil, and was first released in Animotion by Penomena, december 1990. (And the word comes from swedish "gläns", or shiny).

Other examples include Crystal Dream by Triton, and Second Reality by Future Crew. And there's also this, but I'm not one to beat my own drum. A lot, at least.

Anyway, what are the other notable glenz? I'm sure to have missed a lot, considering I've never been on amiga, or atari, for that matter..

This one for introducing the "Celebrandil mode" and this for doing the real Celebrandil mode (bugs included). :)
There's also hardwired, but that's not a "standard" glenz, as it has more faces and more colors..
(not that second reality's glenz is "standard" either)

De Profundis has the current "largest" traditional glenz object currently on Amiga

for the ignorant - what's the difference between "real" or standard glenz?

I thought glenz was if the front polygons also blend with the back, some of the early examples have the front polygons being solid and looking through the backfaces through the missing triangles. Is glenz the shape or the blend or both?

It's a lifestyle.

Never new that the number of polygons or colors was important for it to be glenz...
From the (whoever may have written it) Wikipedia definition, which must mean nothing but could be seen as the common baseline of an information source, the definition is quite ambiguous:

Quote:
Glenz, partially see-through models with a "diamond-like" look. Named by Photon[citation needed] from the Swedish word "Gläns" (glisten or glitter)

Surely the first step was to just swap the coordinates of one side to get the distinct see-thru-effect, but i personally first noticed it as a thing when it was translucent. Not that my info or opinion count, actually. But the translucent version surely is more on the glassy/diamond-ish side. Just a guess, but using the right palette, it is just an AND or an XOR apart from each other, right?

The final look of glenz vectors was done by Celebrandil but Promax of Kefrens did the first transparent & transforming vectors in the Megademo 8 https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=5088.

Last week I thought it would be fun to "modernize" the effect with nowadays tech: https://mrdoob.neocities.org/035/

Hello Sol,

Yes, it is known I think, (at least for an "old" Amiga scenner) that the first GLENZ was coded by Celebrandil... Less known (due to memory or the acces to releases) was in which production, thou...
Thanks for the hint =)!

For my point, as I love glenzes, here my proposition.
Largely overlooked 192 faces GLENZ in Varathron intro by Suspect.

Hybrid Glenz by The Silents is very nice as well...

But those 192 faces are not idividual faces :D they can be obtained by drawing a minimal amount of longer lines between select edge points on a cube, before blitter filling ;)

Dan, are you accusing demo coders of faking?

KURWA GLENZ ANYMACYA
Hahaha... ;)

Here you have, an earlier version - 96 faces in Alternative Reality demo by Suspect as well...
Colorwise not too pretty, but really OK, never the less...

Who did the first lightsourced glenz btw? Leather Dream had it in February 1992, anything earlier?

"will it glenz?"
Vectra by TPC may be the first PC demo with glenz (1991). It was coded by Mr. H who went on to Triton and Crystal Dream.
