Someone wants give me money...can I take it?

category: music [glöplog]
Hey folks,

I have been asked if my music can be bought anywhere....specifically tracks I entered into demoparty compos.
That has never happened to me before, but now it happened 2 times recently.

I am not "bits" though....he was quite laughed at, trying to sell his stuff....^^

Would it be appropriate to set up some kind of "supporter" album on bandcamp for example? (Reminder: Mainly tracks I created for compos)

Under the condition "Name your price", so anybody can still download and listen for free but can buy me a beer....if anybody wants to....

Any thoughts on this? How do other scene musicians handle this?

I COULD of course produce albums that are not demoscene involved....during the years I started multiple projects....multiple.....but I lose interest most of the time and just start a new project....does that sound familiar to you too? =D

...or just keep it. Them being compo releases doesn't really change anything about what you as the creator can do with them. Many demosceners do it, so go for it if you like the idea. ;)

This. It's your music, you can do whatever you like with it.

Oh, I wasnt aware that demosceners are already doing that. =D
And since my tracks fall into the abyss of oblivion after the 3-4 minutes of attention (by a few people^^) I guess its no big deal putting together an album for sale on a voluntary basis.

If you do decide to do so, I heartily recommend Bandcamp, they're by far the best platform to sell your music on - you can even set it to pay-what-you-want.

Can confirm, have my stuff on bandcamp on a PWYL base and it works well.

Yes Bandcamp is my first choice for that!
I`m already reviewing my songs for tracks that might be suited for a coherent album...^^

Don't see why not, it's your music, you have full right to put a price tag on it to allow people to support you if they wish to do so. Plenty other demosceners have their soundtrack works available on the internet as pay what you want.

I would recommend you to try to ensure you list that it's also available for free though and that it's only on the commercial platforms for convenience support, so that some more entitled people will not feel ripped off if they pay for it while they could have it for free.

In regards to platforms i would recommend you to upload it to soundcloud, bandcamp, youtube and routenote (which allows redistribution to spotify, itunes, amazon, rdio, pandora, etc).

.oO( Maybe Skyrunner is just faking this and this is all just part of the marketing campaign. )

Errr....marketing campaign....? oO

I dont even know what to answer to that.... =DDDDD

I started looking for suitable songs today, I dont have anything ready...not really the right moment for a campaign that consists of a simple thread on a scene site....what a kickass campaign that is.... XDDD

In the past 20 years I started working on many albums of different styles finishing nothing...but the different projects and stuff I did start to add up....

I could fill 10 albums I guess...with ideas for another 10....but I guess I wont live long enough to get them all done, and then market them with a fierce campaign here....
=D

just need to post a bandcamp link before the thread dies out :p

So....tomorrow.....well....

I´ll bump the thread again in a few months or years when something is ready....XD

Since you don't seem to be sure what to do with money I could set up a bandcamp with your music and take all the money if you want.

Its not about that, it was about selling demoscene stuff and how it is received here.

I only had "bits" in mind, selling (lame?) demos and that was not well received.

I guess/hope that you are just joking because that is a dangerous thought you mentioned...

Some years ago someone named "blamstain" oder "blainstam" (I dont remember the name correctly) advertised his new album here. Later he found out anyway, that some russian paysites stole and sold his music.

I guess if somebody wants to steal in that way from anyone here, not much could be done anyway

But no, thank you, I dont want you to sell my music. =)

Blamstrain? He has roots in the demoscene, but he's been a professional musician for quite a while. Had a band together with 1in10, among other things.

Yes that is the correct name!!!
He found his own music on some russian paysites, as far as I can remember...^^
Some years ago already....maybe 10 or so.... =D

Honestly, I don't understand why people keep mentioning BITS in a negative way. I think that should have an end. Insistently bashing a person who can't even post does not seem fair to me.

Sorry for being against what seems to be the norm, but I spent some time reading his old posts and checking a few of his prods, and found nothing that could explain the vast amount of thumbdowns and bad mouthing.

Please stop that, guys. Peace and love to all.

Hm ok, maybe I crossed the line of policital correctness...

I had BITS in mind as a bad example for sellling (his own) demoscene stuff in terms of how it was
received by the Scene....in case the only example I knew

And I wanted to know if that is a general problem, selling something you created for the Scene.

I dont know BITS personally and I didnt want to insult or bash him personally.
I just kind of rated some of his demos as "lame". Nothing more.

I received much worse comments on my demo soundtracks and didnt feel bashed though.... =D
