Revision 2019 - April 19th to 22nd
category: parties [glöplog]
Exactly what dipswitch just said
So much this. Lighter food would be awesome, and the vegan has to be there next year again :)
Quote:
- a suggestion for the contents of the visitors' bag: how about putting a small bottle of hand desinfection gel / sanitizer inside? a demoparty is quite a grimey business, and given the recent cases of mass stomach flu etc. at other parties, this could be a real health/hygiene benefit. because, no matter how cleanly you are in "real life", demoparty reality is often like this: you shake dozens of hands, go for a pee at the outdoor pissoirs with no water sink nearby, go and grab a pizza afterwards, etc. etc.
It is probably more effective in a long run to provide proper contact-less "Handdesinfektionsmittelspender" (the ones you usually find in the entrances of hospitals) in mission critical parts of the party location. With 50 euros you can buy a lot of 70% IPA which should get the job done (not everyone will use it anyways).
A bottle of disinfection gel per visitor is possibly a complete waste of money and also generates a lot of unnecessary trash. Why not go for the proper equipment right away?
Also, like some have mentioned, huge thanks for the vegan stand once again. The seitan burgers are delicious, and overall, as a vegan the weekend would be a bit of a challenge without it :)
Would appreciate a soup truck or other lighter options as well, although if it's an either/or situation, I'd rather have the more filling meals we already have.

That Amiga demo compo makes me this year's edition to be one of the most special Easter parties ever. Thanks to you all involved (organizers and content creators)!

Agreed! While not very cheap at ~7EUR a piece, their burgers were a form of art.yeah, the vegan food was amazing!
With all the praise for the fancy food, I gotta say that the traditional Currywrst was next to perfect. Enough sauce and crunchy fries. Demoscene easterparty is almost literally the only time of the year when I'm eating junk food, so I was pleasently surprised by the quality of the junk XD
re: vegan
on the last day I bought one of thouse burgers, went to the grill and asked for a patty, then replaced the vegan patty (that tastes like everything but definitely NOT with meat-replacement qualities).
fizzer was a witness to this :)
(and yes, it was fucking awesome)

Let's not forget the 64k compo and other compos, which were outstanding as well. The quality of entries this year was insanely high across the board IMO.
And yes, the vegan burger was amazing, and the pizza was really shitty. (Only had a pizza once, when the vegan stand was sold out and closed already and I didn't want to eat fries only)
...some hint on some usefull relief from the party stress for some hours: Just in like 10 minutes walking distance there's a wonderful pool, slides & mixed sauna place called Calypso. We check out the sauna every year at some morning/lunch time. There's multiple sauna styles, hang out place and good food. You just might run in another scener naked ;-)
I had a ton of fun and had good times with lots of people :) greets to palinka provided by Arok party <3
and +1 for the vegan stand, really awesome food.
Been to all Revisions and it is always a blast. Thanks for organizing it! <3
Thanks for a great, well-organized party, with amazing people and prods. I had a blast this year!
What a nice Eier holiday weekend!
And even the locals admire our hero:
And even the locals admire our hero:
I enjoyed the party! It was one of the best Revisions so far! Thx a lot to all the orga's!
Insert generic "had an awesome time, thanks to organizers, competitors and visitors" post here. My only regrets are 1) dropping the ball on the 2 entries I was supposed to be working on, 2) getting too drunk on Saturday and last but not least, 3) not trying out the chili cheese fries at the vegan stand. Will try to improve on all of these next year :) Meanwhile, tell me more about this thing you call "Evoke"..
Thanks to every single orga helping to pull out an event like this! Had a blast of a weekend, meeting awesome people and getting my hat blown off in nearly every compo. Wicked entries, very very good PA (and more probable the people behind) - they even made my tunes sound kinda decent.
Already debating with my CEO for next year - though I doubt you can raise the bar yet again next year.
Regarding the loudness: Yeah it was loud, but no, it wasn’t too loud. Just right for me half-deaf so-called musician.
Special kudos to Braujobb for their coffee-thingie-beer and to Ozan for pulling out that BBQ again!

Love you all <3
Revision is the best party ever, very well organized and with lovely little details. On the other hand I think that some room for improvement next year:
-IMHO the volume was too high inside the main hall. Perhaps making the 2nd stage louder for those who prefer to listening to music/awards or dancing would be a balanced solution, and keeping the main hall for coding/painting/music composing/talking... I know people who book a hotel for coding/composing due to this problem. I understand a party is not a silent church, but perhaps reducing a little the volume the party would be even nicer. Next year you could get feedback through your revision app, perhaps using a system similar to the vote-tool, maybe in real time.
-There's not a lot of food variety for 4 days. The curryburst/steak stand and the expensive vegan one were my favourites in that order. Perhaps some additional stand with more "sandwitch" (baguette bread if possible) variery would be nice... something with fresh tomato, lettuce, cheese, omelette,... maybe if you talk with the guy of the blueish mouche/fly he could bring some extra "dressing" next year so it's less boring :-)
-It would be nice to have some drinking water fountain, perhaps near the infodesk.
-Or even better, a beer/wine fountain ;-D
-I guess you have the same requests every year but if the number of productions of an specific type for a platform increases maybe it would be a good idea to split the entries into various compos, or maybe announce various compos warning that these may be joined into another in case of less than X entries. E.g.: make a c64 demo compo and if there are not enough entries (3? 4? 5?) join it with oldschool one.
-The fast music compo could have allowed MODs and maybe supplying a sample pack with less polyphony could be helpful. Otherwise it was a good idea.
-Fast gfx compo next year?
Security is important... moreover in some countries/regions if you organize an event with more than 1000 people you are forced by law to have an ambulance.
All in all it was great to meet my heros and friends at the party, massive respect to all people presenting productions and to the party organizers.

Massive thumb up for organizers for pulling this event up again. Just a small note about people complaining about noise - do you remember how Glxblt wanted to split the building apart with his noise on main stage in 2011? Or, say, Logicoma last year?
Alternatively how bloody Breakpoint sound like in the middle of Sambodrome 24/7? This was peace and quiet - we're getting older definitely.
As for food - grab a taxi or have a healthy 15 minutes walk toward city centre and there's about hundred of awesome kebab/pizza/vegan places serving very delicious meals. Tried once couple of years ago, never come back to pizza stand at party place :)
PS. Whoever found my green soft-shell blouse (Cintimani) left on chair in Polish corner (1st on the right) on Friday night and never heard of again - enjoy responsibly or be kind enough to let me know if you got it. Thanks!

Yay, finally awake enough again for at least semi coherent thoughts... let's give it a try.
About the PA (as the person responsible for the sound): Yeah, I also realized there was some harshness in the upper mids going on, although it really depended on the source material. Properly mixed/mastered stuff sounded good but guess what - the unfiltered output of oldschool hardware or tracked chiptunes as well as some 4K tracks just don't fit that definition. And this year due to an injury I wasn't running at 100% and was subsequently too lazy to EQ the single compo entries; sorry about that.
There's a few ways to fix this, apart from the obvious "put in more effort" there's a way to mostly fix the uneven frequency distribution in the hall (so we can even reduce the total volume a bit); I just have to beg D.Fox for a bit more budget :)
"Inverting" the volume for the music compos as in making the 2nd stage PA loud and the hall one quieter is an interesting idea. The second stage PA is more precise anyway bc it just doesn't need to fill as big a room. I really would like feedback on that from the crowd that usually hangs in front of the big screen - would you be fine hanging around near the infodesk instead or do you want to keep the big hall feeling? The compo will of course be played in the main hall, just at a lower volume.
Apart from that: What a Revision. Thanks to you all.

For 99% of the time outside of compos (during which you should watch the bigscreen and not work on your entries!), visitors are responsible for the volume levels inside the main hall. There were only two big concerts on the main stage, and they weren't even that long and loud compared to live acts in earlier years, so most of the time the PA was not responsible for the high noise level. Let's face it, if 1000 people gather in a place, it's gonna be loud, and there is nothing the organizers can do about that. Noise-cancelling headphones might help.

You could just as well talk to organizers in person. Doing so does work.
Quote:
-There's not a lot of food variety for 4 days.
Having more food trucks means less space for visitors and most likely also increased costs. If you want more variation, there are plenty of opportunities outside of the party place. Most demoparties don't even have food trucks, so I think four of them is already plenty of variation on-site. This is not a streetfood festival after all. ;)

-It would be nice to have some drinking water fountain, perhaps near the infodesk.
The bottled water from the infodesk costs next to nothing, or you can get it for even cheaper at the supermarkets... and I guess getting running water next to the infodesk might be difficult?
Quote:
-I guess you have the same requests every year but if the number of productions of an specific type for a platform increases maybe it would be a good idea to split the entries into various compos
The timetable is already pretty packed as it is. Splitting compos means more overhead time-wise, and thus an even more packed timetable. I wonder which compo made you feel that it needs to be split up, because I cannot think of one?
Quote:
or maybe announce various compos warning that these may be joined into another in case of less than X entries.
The general compo rules of Revision (and pretty much every other demoparts) explicitly state that compos may be merged if there are too few entries. Since Revision is so big, this is rarely needed but it happens at other parties.
Quote:
-The fast music compo could have allowed MODs
You are free to use anything you want for the fast music, including MOD music. For what it's worth, my entry was tracked music (but with plugins). There was no need to only use the provided samples, but this fact might not have been stated explicitly enough. The only requirement was to use the original vocals in some way or another.

-Fast gfx compo next year?
Did you miss the paintover compo?

For what it's worth, there was an ambulance on at least one occasion. It works.
