Revision 2019 - April 19th to 22nd
category: parties [glöplog]
I would like to thank the Revision team and of course the crowd for this awesome event! It was a pleasure to play my new Mega Drive cartridge album 'Technoptimistic' for you and experience the fascinating and REALLY mind-blowing productions all over!
Sorry that we had some issues with the beamer during my gig - would loved to play the 'Red Eyes' video on the screen, but somehow the beamer had problems with my HDMI signal?!
And @Aki : Sorry to hear you had problems with the overal loudness - the Mega Drive FM-music sounds even loud when volume is down. :)
Anyway, massive, unique and outstanding event on all levels- even the currywurst!
I like the idea of an outside stage by the way! But I am sure that there would be some very german-ish problems 'Lärmschutz' and 'Sicherheit' to solve...

* Upper midrange frequencies on the PA seemed seriously overexaggerated
This, absolutely. Somewhere around 2kHz (you know, where our ears are about the most sensitive) or so there was an absolutely horrendous peak in freq response that caused even a lot of professionally produced music to be quite painful. My 64k ambient track was borderline ear-destroyer (though I should've been a bit more conservative with the mixing too perhaps). The PA definitely sounds like it could use some more calibration (just my layperson's opinion). This was the first Revision where I actively had to hold my ears on several entries, especially towards the end of the PC demo compo.
Might write more about the overall experience later, the party overall was fantastic and the best one of these I've had yet!
A few points I want to address:
* Maybe it was just the wifi, but the network was laughably unreliable. What happened?
* I'm sure I'm not the only person who never wants to hear Party x Leben ever again. There's taking the piss and then there's "playing the same song on repeat for three days straight"
* Weather team, could you maybe scale it back a bit? Was far too hot outside during the morning walk from the hotel :)
Other than that, I had a fantastic time - it was great to see everyone again, the theme worked really well, and it was an incredibly strong showing in the compos.
The new 256b category felt right at home, and I think we've collectively proved our point about keeping exegfx around ;)
Can't wait to do it all again next year <3

It used to be a thing at least?
Evoke has an outside stage, or at least it had one 2 years ago. But yeah, at least a screen outside, even if without sound, would have been nice during the smaller compos.
Fantastic party again and a big thanks to the orgas doing this every year. I was going to say that at the prize giving but my mind blanked :( oh well

Yup. That was the Outline PA if I'm not mistaken. Also we dragged the 2nd stage PA outside on some occasions. That was a lot of hassle since it also needed to be brought back. Maybe a small container with a big lock would be possible? It used to be a thing at least?
In the years we had outside music it was mostly warm easy listening and mostly during the day. I'm unsure about the German law on the subject of blasting hardcore techno with lotsa flashing light outside at 06.00 though :) Probably this will create a whole new problem since you'll attract a lot of unwanted guests who also want to party and don't understand why there is no ticket sale and the door is closed :)
I assume the path of having late night parties outside the main hall has been disregarded in the past due to reasons as mentioned above. Any other suggestions on finding a proper solution to the issue of having parties till late in the night are more than welcome.
Maybe a silent disco for example? Or finding an external location at walking distance? Although that will mean a lot of extra strain and financial risks if only 10 people show up :) In the end the orga team cares a lot for the people who like to have a proper nights sleep, so any input that could help is much appreciated!

Same here. It was incredibly stupid hearing this on and on, even in the night! But thanks for the note, I was looking for the name of that song to annoy guys on the way back home :)
Indeed, that "Party Leben" tune got quite old after the sixth-or-so time hearing it...
But besides that, this year's Revision was for me the best one so far! Everything was awesome!

Oh and the food was excellent this time, and not just because the creppe stand started playing RATM and Hardcore Vibes at full blast on Sunday.
yx: Even in an ideal scenario - meaning nobody else running an AP and no signal distortion, WLAN can give you a maximum of 300 MBit/s *shared between all users*. In real-life, dozens of people had opened up (or forgotten to close) private APs on their phones, eating away tons of frequency spectrum. But even without those - with wired Ethernet, in worst case you are sharing 1 Gbit/s with a couple of people sitting around you. With WLAN, 1000 people are sharing 300mbit/s at best.
The rule of thumb is: If you go to a demo party, take a network cable with you. WiFi should only be used for devices that absolutely can not use Ethernet - and that would be phones.
At Breakpoint, due to all this we were selling network cables at the info desk. Maybe selling network cables (and potentially even USB Ethernet dongles) would be an improvement Revision organizing could put onto their todo-list for next year.

scamp: the info booklet thingie said there was a limited amount of ethernet cables being sold at the infodesk.
It was a blast again! After all the effort of the whole tiny intro scene put in last year at revision ("wild' ;) and before, it was so nice seeing finally a "256b" category at revision and new people taking a dive into it ♥ Seeing the technical achievement trophy going to a tiny intro (even if it wasn't mine ;) was especially heart warming. I met a lot of old and new people, sry to the ones i couldn't find the time for :(
To all the (understandable) complaints, i'm very sure the orga team did their best; i can only recommend not forcing yourselves to stay all the time at the location if you're exhausted and by all means, get a hotel or airbnb. I got two nights for two persons for ~80 €, that should be affordable for most people.

Sharing a computer with your girl requires some extra attention ^^ Of course the above post is from me :D
Could've been a perfect party, thanks to the fantastic Amiga and oldschool compos, organization, food and beverages. Wired network was also great. But the techno crap was way too loud and annoying like fuck, next time I would attend only for one day, the competitions and party outside.
AKI...this is my personal view:
It is just a ventilation...it sucks air from outside - and blows it inside.
Not an "air condition" that actively cools down.
Opening the Emergency exits would have had the same effect, besides the fact that we need organizers to guard the open exits.
We had perfect weather conditions and you freezed? Sorry to hear that but remember that we had very icy years outside and ppl complained that the ventilation heated too much...so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ... at Breakpoint 2003...ah i dont mention that.
You can get earplugs for free at the infodesk.
No need to insult our almost deaf Hallo! Was? sound engineers.
Just because our DJs got tired. Otherwise they would´ve spin along.
I know sleeping in the hall is exhausting, even sleeping in the orga area isnt very comfy at all. But sometimes you need to feel the pain, to know you are still alive.
No.
Not gonna happen.
I got your point, but infact we dont forget were we came from...
It may be a bit anarchistic, a bit unsocial and a bit annoying.
And yes it is fucking exhausting when you are on a three nights run on a major demoparty.
But...it is a major demoparty.
When XXX Boombox is annoying you - talk to him and he will at least play another song than "party...Leben"..."Kölsch Kippe Lederjacke" maybe.
Really: Communication is the key. Talk, get a beer...see how easy it is.
When we provide Hotel information and try to deal discounts - it is a nice service isnt it? if you dont want to use it, why dont you check booking.com, AirBNB or just google for yourself? There are a lot of appartments to rent which are not on the Party website. And book way before easter...
Without all the volunteer organizers and without the supporters who pay the double, tripple, quarter and above entrance fee and without our well picked corporate sponsors we couldnt cover our 6-Digit Cost and we would get nowhere and we couldnt do this for this price.
65€ for the entrance fee is expensive. for a party, but not for a party like this.
And it is absolutely needed.
The financial risc the mainorganizing takes every year is insane.
When you overlook the calculations you might ask if the Main Orgas are infact insane themselves.
The personal effort each and every organizer every year (we have organziers who travel 1500km one way just to work their ass off at revision) - is paid with every single smile, hug or "thanx" we get. (Hint: hugging organizers is always a good thing to do.)
Revision is from sceners for sceners.
We are maybe not that comfy here and there, sometimes a bit bitchy, itchy or scratchy...but in every screw and every stripe of gaffa tape is passion and love for the scene.
We´re not a gamerparty with a sceners barn.
Sorry that you felt uncomfortable.
I would like to invite you to a "behind the scenes" next year.
Maybe you see things different after that.

a) The main audio was too loud. I really love my ears more than your party stereo. I couldn't stand it for a long period of time. Does anyone from the orga team responsible for audio need ear specialist?

I slept in the party sleeping area. Because of DJ gigs ended at about 6am I couldn't sleep at all.

hey, could you think about this and make the gigs on the main stage only before midnight and not after that time?
No.

Don't allow visitors to use their loudspeakers after a certain night hour. One could say it's a party feature but hey, ...just no!
Not gonna happen.

I haven't found a 15eur hotel from those listed on the revision website, just about 60 or so..

So I told to myself. God, it's expensive like the whole entrance fee!

The Outline PA was used indeed for the last few years when we scheduled outside music events. This year there was only 1 slot for music events during daytime, all other slots were cancelled as a result of the compo team needing more time to run their side of the show. I figured it wasn't worth dragging the Outline PA to Saarbrucken all the way from Holland for just one set. Sorry about that, if you don't like not having music outside please petition the compoteam to give us time in the schedule for more than just 6 music events (back from 12 the previous years..).
Aki: Sorry but I don't usually answer questions from folks who employ strawman conversational tactics.

Thanks for another great Revision and a great theme! I also laughed my ass off during the opening ceremony. :-D
Another +1 for an outside screen. It doesn't have to be big (though it needs to be bright, naturally). Just the ability to shoot a quick glance to see what is going on inside would be fantastic. It would enhance the "real party is outside" experience a lot. :)

Well said. Couldn't agree more!
If every orga was to sent an invoice to Revision for their job the entrance fee would probably quadruple. At least. There are a lot of people in the orga team who are worth their time in liquid gold and even they don't bill Revision. One love and all that <3
I'm not in charge of hiring new orgas but I guess DIY holds true in this aspect as well: if you notice something really annoying and you know how to to do a better job at it: apply for the the orga team and make next years Revision even better! Or write down a very detailed how-to if it is easy to implement and mail it. I guess you'll find every orga more than willing to listen to improvements.
@Blueberry: we just used twitch on a mobile phone as a very tiny "outside screen" ;-)

Yea, it seemed to depend on what wifi adapter you had. My Asus laptop had lots of problems. MacBook had no problem at all. At some point I connected my phone to my Asus laptop via USB tethering, and that worked fine as well.
@Scali I confirm, my mobile worked fine when I used the wifi, but my laptop didn't. although I didn't use the wifi that much. I really like this "no roaming on the eu" a lot, having an unlimited data plan.
@_docd: Thanks for detailed explanation.
@havoc: OK, sorry.
@havoc: OK, sorry.
Aki: And apologies from my side for my perhaps a bit aggressive first reply. With that out of the way, feel free to hit me up in private if the tips on finding cheaper accommodations that Doc-D already gave leave questions unanswered :)
Cool air ventilation? Loud music? Party through the whole night? Great prods? Crazy people that makes noise during the night? A great Revision team that worked hard? A network that is narrow fast enough to only use the voting system? Damn!!!
Tell me these facts in advance next time, then I had not bought only the "Cannot be here ticket" and stayed not lazy at home on my sofa... (Btw: Great that you are using Twitch, that is stable enough for great streams!!!)
And to be honest: No problem if somebody complains things that he didn't like. But if somebody lists only a lot of disadvantages and no good things, and a lot of things that are completely personal impressions (music can be too loud for somebody, but too quite for other people, or somebody has cold, another one has hot in the same temperature etc.) then maybe a demoparty is the wrong place for you. Maybe it was your first demoparty, then you learned, how a lot of great demoparties are. So you can compare next year hotel prices before you buy the party ticket, or you can decide to stay at home and enjoy the great stream over Twitch... Or also same topic: If somebody has not enough money for such a trip. Not everbody can afford or pay a trip to a demoparty, but then also maybe consider to stay at home before complaining about prices. Every demoparty and location cost a lot of money, and it is hard to find sponsors. Also Revision is afaik the only demoparty, that offers subsidized tickets. Another example: People buying the tickets, so they also expect a great party. Personal I would be disappointed when the DJ would stop at midnight or 2 o'clock and would say: Please go to bed all now...
Don't answer to me, I do not want continue discussing this topic. But all this comments here provoked me to write this... Finally let me say: Revision and similar parties are just great !!!
