origins / meaning of group names

category: general [glöplog]
Some time ago in this thread I was asking about the origins of demoscene names and the like, but following a discussion I started thinking about the origins of some of the group names and the stories behind them.

So please, share your stories on why groups are called what they are!

I'll start with Queer Conspiracy: it's a conspiracy of queer agenda!

"The Adjective" is named after a joke we had where we realized that a large portion of glitch hop song titles follow the format "[adjective] [adjective] [food]".

"Nexus in Space" (the group does not exists yet, not only for the demoscene) named that way because of last boss of Quake 4.

Outbreak. Its from the movie. Thec was ”the colonel” at first. Also from the movie. Clone of outbreak was first called ”mr mutaba” or something like it. The virus from the movie.

We didn’t exactly adore the movie, it just happenwd to time. Breakin, well, out-break. Work it out ;)

The name comes from the Bible. We chose it, because this word is in the very beginning of the alphabetical order. Which also means the greetings parts could start with us :)
k comes from some joking speaking from an old friend, storm comes from myself, skarab comes from a girl calling me like this in my childhood.

greenroom was pitched by IR, not sure where he got it from. it means the lobby where artists hang out before/after/during doing a show.

the jokegroup Tömbselejtező (means something like 'grouped preselection contest') came to life at the legendary Csoki club. the group members were sitting in the foyer under a sign saying TÖMBSELEJTEZŐ that was left there at the communal house after a scene of the locally famous film 'Csinibaba' was filmed there.

Traction should have been Forsaken (and the first demo Traction), but it somehow got mixed during the making of the demo. And to rephrase, I had nothing to do with that demo :D I came along later.

My handle came from this. Oh, those days...

Nah-Kolor

Doesnt mean anything.. It's just about friendship and making productions..

I took Kolor from a beachball lying in my room and my friend Dreamer just put Nah infront of it :)

minimalartifact was created as a response to the releases by a joke-group called minimalanimal who were making fun of the "artyfaggot" demos of >7 min long single effect scenes. minimalartifact was set to prove that >7 min demos with single effect had a purpose.

FXM was created on a drunk / stoned stupor at buenzli i believe. Coined to RMX other peoples scene productions into a more experimental thing.

Enough Records was named as a tribute to the pirate webradio we had running before the label was created, it was called Enough Radio.

No clue on the origins of TPOLM. It's probably related to moomins though. ;)

Great thread!

Condense was a French-based "noise music" rock band during the 90s (completely underground). My brother had a CD of that band, I hated the music itself but loved the name, so I "borrowed" the name for demoscene purposes. :)

My nickname "NoRecess" is the refrain of "School", a music from "Bleach" album by Nirvana.

All of that when I was 14. Oh, the "nice" 90s.. :D

LKCC - berlin group, if I remember correctly, the guys met at a computer club in the former GDR, where the learned to code the Z80 based "Kleincomputer" (small computer) called KC, so LKCC stands for "Last KC Club" ..

Yakuza, formerly known as TUC (the unlimited crew), the later derived from the song "No limit" by 2Unlimited, was renamed 'cause of the interest of the founding member George Stark (which is a character from the Book "Stark, the dark half" by Stephen King) in the japanese history ..

and Unchained has multiple origins: a reference to the Song "Unchained" by Hammerfall, since the group is a late reunion, and a reference to the mysterious VGA mode X .. TheMechanist is not the character from a game like Fallout or Bioshock, it's a hint to the great industrial metal band Fear Factory ...

Panda Design was named as such because we needed a name and for some reason I thought it'd be a good one at the time. I'm actually struggling to make sense of why; it's something that pops up every now and then — I've never been that into pandas during any part of my life, so why did I think of it, and why did I bring it up?

It hasn't been the worst choice of name ever; would've been even better if another panda–themed group hadn't popped up a couple of years later.

Cocoon was created in 1997 by guille and myself. We both left Syndrome ( our former amiga group) and decided to create a new group. When name was discussed I selfishly thought about making logos. I was fed up with a 8 letters name. I thought COCOON was cool becasue it was shorter and it's easier to have fun with O and C letters. Moreover you can recycle both of them.

It is scary how accurate this is! :O

DeBrasserie was called after a lunchroom in Zevenaar, Trepaan is the dutch word for trepan, the saw used for trepanning. Poo-Brian originated after my phone misspelled 'poo-brain' when signing up for evoke 2018.

"but why do you hate Grif?" (was a group back then)
"..... because they... they are Firg backwards"
it stuck

also, fun fact, 2 sceners from the 90s around here called Fack and Gaf got their name after noticing a FUCK OFF graffiti next to their elementary school. so they took up the 2 words as nicknames, respectively. later on they learnt what they meant so it got modified a bit. :D

FUCK and OFF are insanely good nicknames tbh.

First just Ivory, as suggested by pumpuli. But because there's already an old group called ivory and i wanted a more early-2000s techy-name so I added labs., therefor Ivory Labs. but we'll often just use "Ivory".
