Nectarine is no more
It's been fun while it lasted. Now give it a rest.

Don't mail me.
it happened while i was listening at about 7pm..

there was some drama in the oneliner, it seems VodkaBot had some running joke of cueing tracks by CyberJeff en masse, especially the low-scoring ones, resulting in most of those tracks being banned. But today CyberJeff appeared and was very angry about all of this, demanding all his remaining tracks get permanently erased from the site, and then VodkaBot appeared and cued a load of CyberJeff tracks again..

not sure if any of that's got anything to do with it or not but it is all very weird

There's a discord going on right now: https://discord.gg/6RGwrUK but not many have joined, and IRC is talking at EsperNet #nectarine

I have some details saved of messages sent or said before the shutdown as I was not online at the time, but this is all quite convoluted.
It's for all the people who don't do Facebook or IRC I guess.
I'm kind of blown away that Arab would just take Nectarine down without any warning, announcement, discussion, or explanation. What an insult to all of us who have contributed to the site over the years--even sent Arab money to keep the site going!! And countless hours uploading songs and setting song info!
This is wrong.

Nectarine should not be the sole property of one troubled individual to do with as he pleases; it has become a cultural resource for many people over the years. It is really reckless to use a dictator-like position to "punish" us in this way. I'm kind of taken aback by the disrespect.

Nectarine has involved thousands of artists and countless listeners over the years. A little spat between VodkaBot and CyborgJeff should not be cause to suddenly eliminate Nectarine!

That's like burning down your house because two of your kids have an argument!

This is really inconsiderate. If anybody know more details, could you let me email you--I don't have the email of any Sceners.

Er, well, it wasn't really VodkaBot. As far as I'm aware the final spat was between CyborgJeff and arab. Though some people didn't like some of CyborgJeff's tunes. arab did ban some CyborgJeff tunes a few months ago or so (those rated 3.1 or less, iirc). There's more to it, and the message from CyborgJeff is saved somewhere by a few people.

well i'm not going to judge anybody but if Arab is "troubled" i hope he is ok.. someone else's mental health is worth more than my ability to listen to scene music on a particular site, i don't have any entitlement.

i'm sure VodkaBot was just fooling around and i can understand CyberJeff being upset. it's just sad it had to come to this.
whoa, that sucks. so much for ratings and ranting about them...
i really feel sorry for all of the regular nectarine users/listeners. :/
hoping that there are 'official' backups and that nectarine can rise again!

I think you guys misread or don't have all the details. VodkaBot loved to play CyborgJeff, especially on Fridays. Others... not so much. Some people particularly disliked the songs that had singing. To help try to balance things (supposedly) arab removed the ability to queue (banned) songs by CyborgJeff that had an average rating of 3.1 or below. This involved a bunch of his catalog. CyborgJeff also already had some banned tunes because they were from games, and the reviewers (or arab) saw no scene connection.

CyborgJeff posted to the forums about it, some other stuff ensued, and the site came down.

From above, I forgot to make it a real link! https://discord.gg/6RGwrUK ... silly me.
What the. Please. Really?

Why on earth would song voted as high as 3.1 be banned? That makes no sense.

Gargaj: How exactly was I disrespectful?

If a pet is irreparably sick you put it to sleep.

For now this will be the only comment on why Nectarine has been put down.

If there is a way to go forward time will tell.

E.O.S.

P.S. This is and will be my one and only comment about current state of things.

P.S.2. Motherf...! No sorry, can't leave it like that!!!

It's effing disrespectful to suggest i've taken money to run the site (apart from some short time - like 3-4 months - to cover for the server operating costs - but then it was explicitly stated). This was an open beer fund to tip based on your liking. Nobody forced anyone - stop suggesting otherwise. I've been paying several years straight from my own pocket to cover the server costs. Suggesting otherwise is… i have no words. Shame on you.

ok sorry i know VodkaBot used to cue CyberJeff's low-rated songs a lot, i didn't know why though i always just thought he was trolling us! But of course different people like different things.. and the oneliner would end up full of people going, oh no not this again.. was quite entertaining in a way but if someone did a regular slot where they played all my lowest-rated tunes i'm trying to imagine how i'd feel..

human beings are so complex. don't you just wish you were a robot sometimes
all the best to you Arab and thank you for all the good times i had listening in
I guess there have been very substantial reasons to do it like this. For me, Necta has been an important fun thing, and I feel thankful for everything that's happened over the years. I just hope it could continue.

Apart from the "troubled"-bit, I don't see any disrespect in the message of Oldchap.

Shutting down suddenly a community-based website without any explanation, any hope for a follow-up, IS disrespectful to the users.

your curiosity does not entitle you to an explanation. your sense of belonging is not an entitlement to someone else's hospitality. this was someone else's private endeavour. be grateful for what you've been given.

Arab:
It's not the idea that you were making money off Nectarine (I'm sure that nobody thinks that), it's about the contributions that we have made. You have to consider the fact that we've given money (as well as our time and effort) because we value this resource (and community). For you to throw it away spontaneously is quite injurious to us.

Gargaj:
I wasn't under the impression (or insinuating) that Arab has "mental problems." By "troubled" I simply meant that anyone who would destroy a cultural treasure that means so much to so many people (and which is the center of a real community), is obviously acting out of some really problematic anger, spitefulness, vindictiveness, etc. That is "troubled" behavior. He obviously needs to work something out, because mature, healthy people don't attack and destroy something dear to many others. I fully stand by all of my statements and I challenge you to refute them. "Troubled" can refer to issues of character and not only to "mental" issues. I meant the former; if he actually did have the latter (no desire to speculate here), then I would certainly exercise compassion and hope for his improvement.

NEVERTHELESS, people who hurt others are often themselves damaged, and we do not consider it an excuse for unacceptable behavior! Calling him out for this very irresponsible and petty action is perfectly acceptable, and using words like "an insult," "disrespect," "inconsiderate".... these are simply adjectives that describe the real nature of this action. Do you disagree? Do you not feel insulted by his elimination of your community / demoscene resource?

In terms of making the "dictator" comparison, I never had any unfavorable interactions with Arab; all my communication with him was polite in both directions. But others on the site had occasionally made allusions to the "dictator" -like administration style, i.e. him hoarding all power instead of allowing Nectarine to be a community-administered resource. And this final act really demonstrates that. It's a Jim Jones-like act---"I'm tired of being the boss, but I'm not going to turn it over to you guys; I'll just burn the house down so nobody gets it." Such BS. The onus of responsibility for this is on him--he should act more mature--not on us for expressing very legitimate frustration.
