Sceners on Packet Radio in the 90s?

I noticed a few folks have mentioned Packet Radio on here, which made me wonder where (which band), when and what callsigns they used, it's a strong possibility that we may have had connections if you operated on the 11m (27mhz) band :-)
My callsigns were (while in England) ENG01A bbs, UK1SOL, BB1SOL bbs and just "SOL" (node) operating from Solihull in the UK.
When I moved to .nl, I had a bunch of gear setup operating NL3SOL and NL3RIJ...
I occasionally dropped down on to the 26.860Mhz (iirc) LSB mode and connected to ITACA in Italy, and thereabouts... anyone else do that?
I still run a packet node, though that's for APRS on the amateur bands, bit boring really :-)

I remember SOL! at least I may have passed through it on my travels.

I started with a Baycom board connected to an IBM XT PC, got around Europe quite a bit with that but eventually found out the wonders of a proper TNC, which then also worked on the Miggy :-) But really, i got sold on the proper BPQ networking layer and thusly shoved the TNCs into KISS mode hehe.
Kantronics stuff = just brilliant, I didn't have a KAM but a bunch of KPC3s connected to a PC with a few ISA->serial cards in it. KAMs were like... :O expensive in comparison, lucky bastard.
It's really weird remembering this stuff, I think I even have some pictures of the single frequency BBS/Node (SOL) I took on a really early Mutek digital camera (awful!). I'll have a poke around for those...

Superstar 3900 (still have it) in the shed+aviary down the bottom of the garden. At night a parallel port relay box would automatically switch on the 150w linear amp at night during to forward mail to IIRC Cannock and Telford which was a bit of a pain since it used to mess with the security lights :-D
The vertical was a Sigma Vector 4000 which got totally bashed about by the trees. It eventually broke but well after I finished using it, surprisingly resilient!
Fixed position 2 element 11m beam, I used to DX but eventually relegated this old thing to a fixed position on there pointing in the general direction of EU for any skip that came in on ch 24 mids (27.235)

I'm guessing that you might have use the "other" SOL, on 2m/70cms, that wasn't mine - GB7SOL was my homebbs for my ham packet though :)
I liked the direct DX appeal of packet on 11m more so than the amateur band stuff, it seemed more progressive to me, holding only a class B at the time (1200 baud at HF on FM). Me a 11m pirate? perhaps :-)

Someone gave me a Baycom modem, which I used for FAX & SSTV before all this newfangled soundcard DSP came out.
I remember the Telford node too!
Put up a siggy4 for a mate in Kensington (would you believe) a long, long time ago.
Don't tell me - your camera is SERIAL connection, mine had a PCMCIA card for memory, twas rather large...

I am ENG040 BBS and node, operator Brian from Telford. i have now moved to wedensfield Wolverhampton. I run AGWTRACKER on 144.800 and 27.235 fm. there is still packet operators on but due to the lack of interest not many. but i am willing to set up a BBS or Digi.

a bit of necroposting there, but it certainly seems interesting. heard a lot about BBS's but didn't know some existed in packet radio form. cool stuff!
