Singing in demos
category: general [glöplog]
What's the general consensus on this? Do you like it? Do you loathe it? Does it really matter?
I like a lot of demos, on both Amiga and PC, which have singing voices with lyrics, and whilst some sound like professional artists (Human Traffic) others can simply be blind drunk (303). What bothers me is the dislikes I hear in the comments, like these people aren't good enough to make it as professional or even semi-pro singers. Then again, I can think of a few so-called famous celebrity pop and rock artists who only seem so sing well enough thanks to autotune. Demogroups have people talented in their own fields as it is, so I fail to see why there can't be budding singers among them, or those that they hire, especially for free.

It matters as much as this thread does.

It exists and can range from good to bad.

Autotune is an effect, and has especially nowadays little to do with making someone "sing well".

especially for free.
You mean for exposure?
Someone posted on Fields of Glass that "please, never sing again" or something along those lines. I have a new demo in works just for that person >:)

If you call me anything, you will call be by my own name.
And I am not "naughty".
This demo is great and has singing (shouting?) inside it: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=52968
As with anything else: if you do it, do it right.

I never liked singing in any music...despite having been a singer in my own band for ~7 years, haha.
Listening to Death-Metal mostly nowadays where singing is just hardly understandable noises!
I consider singing as just another instrument, i never cared about the words that are sung or even their meaning.
Singing in Demos: PUKE! Doesn´t belong there! Some Vocoder-Voice chanting greetz is where i draw a line.
So, now that you know my taste, how does that help you? What´s the purpose of this thread?
There can´t be any consensus btw, as the demoscene is pure anarchy where everyone is allowed to do whatever he wants...if ppl like it is another question! -> maybe that´s what you were trying to find out with this thread?
my vote is: I hate singing in demos, please don´t do that! :p

Who cares? Just sing if you want to.
There was a demoscene lyrics site somewhere.
Vocals in demos (or any music actually) come with the risk of being embarrassing, off-putting or unintentionally funny if not used well and appropriately. Beyond the singers performance itself, getting vocals right involves recording and mixing techniques which can easily mess up things as well.
Same goes for practically everything involved in a demo soundtrack, so we could have the same discussion for "Kick drums in demos", "Tubular bells in demos", "Electric guitars in demos", "Voice over narration in demos", whatever. Some of those will probably make ɧคɾɗվ puke by simply existing. So I suggest we introduce a ɧคɾɗվ-metric for categorizing demo soundtracks and use it to order demos during compos.
This demo has a nice opera singing part by a professional female vocalist: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=71588

Also, vocals often are not clearly intelligible on demoparty PAs, so no matter how good or bad the singer is, some sort of subtitles may help conveying your message if there is one. ;)
@saga guess so
this is the best demo with singing in it.
