zx spectrum TV

category: general [glöplog]
does anyone know if there is a modern portable TV for sale anywhere that still has manual VHF tuning? my speccy is sat here all alone after the old man that owned it died and left it to me, to my delight :)

Wouldn't you be better off with a TV tuner?

have been looking for an old school PCTV tuner but no luck in finding that? I'm happy also to go the retro route as there is room in the corner for a cathode ray box?

what type of speccy is it?

composite out mod for 16k/48k model looks stupidly easy to do:

slightly more involved for 128k or better:

tv tuners are notoriously unreliable in combination with oldskool machines
even if a certain combination happens to work you'll probably lose half the frames due to interlace conversion :(

get an RGB scart cable for it. It's the only reliable video output you'll get from a speccy

ok ive got an aplic usb2vhs or rgb adapter.... now me just have to convert the rf socket output from the speccy to a vhs or rgb output.... am currently looking for video mixers that will take the RF input plug??

all that seemed to be required to complete the connection is a scart 2 rgb lead which have ordered

I've used a usb video capture device with my speccys. Not a perfect solution I guess, but does the job.

Yes.. the + does only have RF output

Speccy 16k, 48k and + only have RF output. 128k and upwards others have RGB on a bespoke socket

or, since it's 2017, use dead simple tk-pie (google it!) and rpi zero to get speccy's video output on HDMI!!

For 16/48k Sinclair machines I'd recommend to go the slightly more complex approach (adding 2 transistors + resistors instead of just bypassing the modulator) and modify the machine to output S-Video. Picture quality greatly improves, as the ZX composite has some really bad pixel crawl, while the S-Video mod is quite close to RGB quality wise.
RGB is only possible on 128k machines or clones (like the TK-90x for example)
