Watching demos in public - hazards
category: residue [glöplog]
I watch/listen to demos at home, mostly through emulators when I can, rather than videos, as the original files take up so little space.
However, I decided to make video recordings of 500 of these demos (just about fits my 32Gb MicroSD card on my smartphone) or just download them from YouTube, for the purpose of mostly listening to them when I'm AFK.
The vast majority (212) are Amiga demos, since they're the ones I watch most, but I found myself watching Atari ST demos on the phone on the bus last night, because I'm not so familiar with those.
However, I was wary that people could see the screen I was looking at, and was wondering about the public outcry that would be caused if some irate old lady saw me looking at what she thought was porn on the screen?
It could cause a news story, bringing the Demoscene into the spotlight for the wrong reasons! :(

I was watching demo when I was in a gym treadmill once with those tablet screens, and I was wondering what people would think me watching this weird spinning cube or psychedelic plasma, maybe someone would ask what that is and I would start telling him about the demoscene. Those Amiga demos have some nudes sometimes, can be kinda awkward, but I was like wtf I don't care, maybe someone will ask and learn and I'll tell him it's just art bro :)
I was also watching demo on internet cafe, the Produkt, and some guy near me started asking and he was like "The product will make you happy, hahahaha that's cool!", it was like he was mocking or laughing at those quotes and it was funny what outsiders think of these weird demoscene poetry, eheh
once my mum walked in on me while i was watching Desert Dream. really awkward!

Does Desert Dream have porn?
Let me give you a few anecdotes about my parents and Amiga stuff:
1. I once had an Atari ST and got the game Damocles for it. Then later on I get an Amiga A500 and again get Damocles so I can carry on playing the game. My mother doesn't like that and breaks the game floppy disk. But afterwards, I salvage the disc itself from the inside and stick it in a new floppy disk casing, and it still works fine.
2. I remember receiving Demoscene disks for Amiga in the mail one day, and I open the package when my mother was there. She takes one look at the floppy disk label ("Noxious Beyond Belief") and she's outraged! She's thinking I'm up to no good on the computer! But I reassure her otherwise and she never follows it through. Good job she never saw the nude beach lady on THAT one, I can tell you!
3. I made three games and two utilities on Amiga, and such is my parents' belief that I can program that they simply do not believe me when I said I made those games. I had to show them my name in the credits, for proof. Wow, what support(!)

It does happen to have the occasional juicy melon.

I managed to forget about the loading screen for Gamma during our visit to Pixar when we were showing demos to the recruiter lady. She was somewhat entertained.

Don't you think that demo is kind of... gay? what will the people think? there might be a public outcry, or even make it to the news!!
I thought about proposing a "NSFW" warning label on prods containing nudity but then I realized that it would be met with a negative response.
