demos with Stanley Kubrick in them

category: general [glöplog]

The movie 2001: A Space Odyssey becomes 40 years old this year. Yet I've not seen a demo that matches the 1337-nes of the "color travel"-sequence in that movie. I'm not talking about the flybys of mountain ranges with inverted colors now, I mean the pattern part before that.

Ok, Kubrick had much more money at his disposal than the average demo coder but todays computers would have cost like a million aircraft carriers at that time so it evens out. If you know of any demos with Kubrick in them, please direct me that way. And the average abstract 4k will NOT do, the complexity of the patterns in 2001 are far beyond that.

What you seek!

But it's not really a demo. No. Not a demo at all.

Fiat Homo contains the monolith.
It's Full of Stars takes its title from 2001, and is kind of a my take on the end part.

I was at one point thinking of trying to do a 64k version of the 2001 end part, but I decided not to even try it without access to the Ligeti score. It's Full of Stars is what's left of the idea.. and, in my opinion, a failure in many ways.

The Takeover 2001 surprise compo was dedicated to the movie 2001. Don't expect much quality releases though :-)

And here are the compo rules.

It was good for it's day. Very good in fact and I'd love to know how they did it but by today's standards it looks shit in my opinion.

Buttler : How did they do it ? They used color vats, and an optical trick called slit-scanning. Haven't you read this ? Yes, I know, shameless auto promotion one more time, but Willbe's soundtrack is so great, I just can't help... :D

Anyway, on a more serious note, I actually tried to re-create the ride from 2001 (usually called the "Stargate Sequence") a few years ago using modern hardware. The thing is : around the 60ties, it was really a piece of hack, requesting costly devices and loads of patience. But nowadays, with modern hardware, it's fairly straight-forward. Think something like texture scrolling with a bit of blending, and you got it. So I made a -really crude- texture scroller and, thanks to the work of this guy, who actually ripped the original textures from a DVD (!!), I did something quite similar to the original footage (after hours of careful texture-tiling tweakings... Yes, I had nothing better to do at that time. hehehe)
Of course, the program was so crude that I never released it, it was more like a part of my background stealth-works I had to do, as a writer and simply out of curiosity, before actually writing about it. :)

The effects in 2001 are indeed bloody brilliant and smooth.

TomS4wy3R: Thanks for the info. Even if the technology these days is pretty simple you still need a sh*tload of great textures to achieve the same level of brilliance.
