Apple PPC G5 (OSX) anyone???
category: general [glöplog]
Saga: I found the Mac Mini and it is now running Debian. Contact me at geir@darkside.no so we can work out the shipping details etc.
neon: Thanks! Will send a mail shortly! :)
yzi, jmph: Thanks for the offers, but having the hardware right at my place is an even better option since I know exactly when it will be available for running. :)
We were previously looking out for used PowerMac G5s on ebay, but the "good ones" were going for around 200€, which is quite some money for a bit of testing infrastructure.

^^ No probs! Yeah 200€ is a lot for a G5 unless it's the very last quad-core model & well upgraded. I got both my G5s for free and the Cube cost me $30 (but was missing the PSU which is worth more than that on its own.) Universities are tossing the things out at the moment.
My (faulty-PSU) music rig has a 2.3 GHz dual-core CPU, 512MB 16x PCIe GPU and 16GB of DDR2 - same specs as my 2013 Macbook Pro. Insanity for a workstation from 2005. The other one is a dual-2.0GHz w/DDR1 and AGP.

Was there any demotools for PowerPC MACs??? Official? Unofficial? Unrealised???
Spöntz demotool supported PPC OS X
And here's the pouet demotool listing for PPC OS X prods: http://www.pouet.net/prodlist.php?type%5B%5D=demotool&platform%5B%5D=MacOSX&page=1
Thank you! That Spontz editor looks great!
Gonna make something for MAC!!!

Spontz' tool works up to 2.0, 2.1 went Intel only. It looks like a really nice editor but I haven't really done much with it. I also had problems with it (actually all Spontz prods) on my 2.3DC w/the NVidia graphics card, you might have to use a Radeon.
The prod page links version 1.1, get 2.0 here: Spontz demotool

Thanks! I have both nvdia and radeon. Going to try them both.
Also you have made nice rave in your Game Over prod.
Do you still make bigbeat/rave???

PPC macs? Hmm.. unless you're going for some assembly code, or happen to have one of these old boxes to hand, is there much point? On an intel mac you'll get pretty much exactly the same stuff, but newer OpenGL (or metal), faster hardware etc...
It'd be a bit like picking pentium 4 and windows 2000 as your platform. Nothing wrong with it, but without some specific reason maybe not something you'd choose.
Then again, they did make some nice boxes... those silver g4 towers :) I still have a g4 powerbook here somewhere. Not sure i ever had a g5, next one after that was intel.

Hah, thanks! The Game Over soundtrack is definitely my favorite thing I did in 2015. :)
I'm working on some new stuff but mostly into tech-house & disco at the moment. There's always room for breaks & acid in my tunes though!
OS X/PowerPC user here! My Cube died on a hot summer day after running 24/7 for over seven years. Now on a PowerMac G4 tower (XPC-7410 550 MHz, 2 GB RAM, SM 3.0 GPU, customized and finetuned OS X 10.5.8 +XCode3 with Apple's autovectorizing fork of GCC 4.0.1).
If you want to get a less crappy performance out of your source code on this platform/arc make sure you use the following version of GCC that shipped with XCode 3.0.x:

I was looking on that SPONTZ demotool. Its not bad! At least for start! So what? Will be make some PPC G4/G5 demo?
I can do music and logo (street art style) and some 3Ds too... Who will join?

Did you run a BBS? :)
Wow! new stuff for my G4-Mini R9200/32MB OSX Panther 10.3.9 :) THAT would be very NICE indeed. I have checked out all available stuff here. I got a bunch of demos that work really good on the G4-Mini. I did not have seen any real oldschool-effects on a G4-mini. No Scrollers, Rasterbars, etc. I expected the "macscene.org" to have more stuff, but the side is dead :(
The best looking stuff for the g4-mini are probably the ati-techdemos for the radeon.

These three productions are currently my favorites on my G4-Mini

These are no OSX Executables. Do they run with morph-OS?
Are we talking about this here: http://macminios4.blogspot.de/2008/12/install-os-4-on-to-mac-mini-how-to.html
I do not want to change the CD-Drive of my Mini, is there another way to do it?

They do indeed run on MorphOS.
And don't bother with OS4 on the Mac Mini, the version that might work is way outdated.
I read about, that OS4 has no sound on the Mini. Therfore I should give Morph-OS a chance?
Lots of software for it: http://morphos-files.ppa.pl/top20.php
Should be a great alternative for my native 10.3.9 with 9.2.2 (Classic)

Interesting stuff for Demo-Coding on Mac http://web.archive.org/web/20031026140859/http://www.macscene.org/ppcdc/coregraphics.php
Every time I think I want to play with MorphOS I go look at their utterly insane pricing/licensing scheme and remind myself not to bother. Sure I could download the demo, but until they fix that shit I'm absolutely not gonna register it ever, so what's the point.

Well, I don't think 79€ for a license is that bad, especially considering all updates since version 2.0 have been free for registered users.

I'm still running the unregistered version on two machines, and it's enough for me :D
