Dipswitch tries to rewrite history yet again on Demozoo
category: residue [glöplog]
Baudsurfer I really wish you wouldn't do this. I don't know if you are really this emotionally attached to some 30 year old history or you just use this claim of such a strong personal connection to try and appeal to the sympathy of others. Either way it isn't healthy and it isn't working.
I'm even willing to give you the benefit of doubt that what you claim is true and that you were a co-sysop of an RSI BBS in the late 1980's. That's cool and it would surely be a great memory for you. But history is history and it often remains best in the minds of those who experienced it. You can't transfer your fond memories into the minds of other people. What I mean to say is that something that was a big part of your young life is nothing but a small note in a text file that nobody else really cares about. If you truely leave your mark in the minds of others through some great work you did then people will remember and preserve it. But sometimes what you do is only remembered and cared about by yourself.
For example I began my scene experience on the C64. I wrote a couple of small intros and even made a full multipart demo. None of that is preserved, I was too lame to have anything I made spread and I lost all my disks. Same with the Amiga, I was a member in many groups and did multiple releases, and dozens of MODs but almost all of it is lost because nobody cared at the time to spread and save it and they certainly don't care now. It is just a memory in my mind and that is ok, that is all that is important to me.
I understand nostalgia, I was away from the demoscene for 20 years and my first release after that time was under an old and dead groupname. Luckily nobody cared because the group never had a signifiant history and all the members are nice people who wouldn't fight about it anyway. But if somebody did have an issue with me using that group name I would have to admit that my connection to it probably had expired.
It seems this might be the case for you also. Again if I believe your story that you were a sysop but you contributed no releases that you could be credited with and then you did nothing for 20 years... the connection is gone, particularly since the group moved on after you were innactive and merged with another group. It's kind of hard to justify you resurrecting the name and claiming ownership and leadership of it when your past connecting isn't very well documented.
Like so many others have said, your tiny intros are so good that they have a much bigger impact to your name and respect than any old connection to a group from the 1980's. You should be proud of where you are now and move forward with that. By insisting on using a name which is disputed you only bring negativity and hate. I really can't understand what you are trying to gain by clinging to such a distant memory since it does more harm than good, the scene has moved on and you probably should too.
Finally I want to say that grown ass men in their 30's and 40's arguing over silly pseudonyms and groupnames from when you were teenagers is kinda pathetic. Seriously it just isn't worth fighting over. Nobody looks good in this situation, neither Baudsurfer or the people who continually attack him. It's really childish and it is also obvious that Baudsurfer gets more negativity for this than anyone else. The legitimacy of the current Fairlight PC demo members has been called out by some oldschool FLT members but I have never seen anyone attacking Smash about that.
Honestly, besides being a convenient way to catagorise releases for the purposes of archiving, the whole username/groupname thing is kinda redundant and actually a little bit embarassing particularly when you have to explain it to outsiders. I totally understand it is a big part of demoscene culture but it sure isn't worth fighting over.

wtf
Keops I don't know if you are saying my post is boring or just the entire subject is boring.
Either way just to explain the point of my post was to try and treat Baudsurfer as a human being who does make a good contribution to the scene. I figure 8 years of people saying "Baudsurfer sucks, lol Next Empire, fake RSI" and thumbing down his prods has done nothing to solve the situation. It just reinforces his existing feelings that people are hating on him unfairly and there is no way he will listen to those people. Perhaps attempting to relate to his feelings and trying to reason with him might be better.
It probably won't make any difference but at least I tried.

drift: the topic, not you :)

in this context, i think this is a great piece of art...
yes, this is how i will remember RSI.

and probably is tFt too here on pouet after being Flashy/Kenbeb initially
wtf?
I'm NOT tFt.
Baudsurfer, you just mispelled kendeb as kenbeb.

Eh, by who specifically? Certainly not by Strider at least, who went on the 25 years cruise with the rest of the group, and certainly not by Bacchus, who is still very much around and in charge.
Now if some unknown punk with supposed oldschool credentials would come along and claim that the current Fairlight is illegitimate and that he is now the leader of the "real" Fairlight, then the burden of proof would be on him, and he would be the one attacked, not Smash or anyone else in the actual Fairlight which has a continuous and well known history since the eighties.
But that would just be a silly claim to make, right?

I would really want to know who spews out this crap. Since the begin boundaries were set and it was agreed that only the oldschool JML members were allowed to use BBS systems and have plasma effects in their demo releases. This agreement (known officially as Договор о дружбе) has been well kept for the past years.
I would guess that this is probably a false flag operation by known rival groups like äärikeskusta, speedfisters, NE or MFX.
Happy birthday, Baudsurfer!
the fact is that the red sector inc is dead, because it has merged with tristar.

cant even see a single original Fairlight Member from the 80s...change the name please regards from AD and Autopussy and Luke and Chuck from 1989.
To bad Strider is now a lame USA Chairman.
Was a comment left by Autopussy on a Fairlight demo.
I don't agree with that at all, I think it is a stupid comment. Just pointing out that Baudsurfer is not the only person to get accused but he is certainly the one who gets the most hate for it.
For what it's worth I think Baudsurfer should just drop the RSI name because it's not worth the arguing, negativity and drama. Also I am sick of hearing about it every time his name is mentioned.
Others who are "accused" are not probably making such ridiculous and inconsistent claims about themselves. But yes, there's no need to argue about this. Bill Best, Irata and Mr.Zeropage don't know the guy, no old memberlists have the guy, no old scrollers mention the guy... Without even going to any points made in that famous NE legacy post by reed i just can't see how this could be something else than a no-brainer.
Ok this is the sort of shit I am talking about: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=68025#c771355
Calling someone a fag and telling them to kill themself is pretty much inexcusable behaviour. This is way more childish and pathetic than any false name using.
Socially inept man children fighting over teenage memories from 30 years ago. Fucking despicable.
I feel stupid for having wasted my time even trying to make a reasonable argument on this whole situation now.

Serpent: yeah I agree with what you say. The point I was making is that Baudsurfer gets attacked with such hostility (as I posted above) there is no way he would listen to people who are being so immature about it. I thought a more reasonable argument could be put forward for him dropping the name. Fact is the name brings him more harm than good and even by his own version of the story (if someone even chose to believe that) he has such a tiny connection to the group name that I can't see why he is so attached to it or feels he can claim ownership of it.
Now I just don't give a shit any more. I feel embarassed for people on both sides of the argument.

Not comparable, since he's the one doing the accusing in this case ("TRSi is illegitimate").
No seriously. Stop feeding him.
i should've set up a Canadian BBS for Apple Computers in 1985 without their knowing. I could've told Tim Cook i'm the rightful boss and make a lot of dough selling sub-par hardware to hipsters!
Why choose a name like RSI for the group, unless the whole purpose is to get maximal attention and controversy.

^ THIS
Make a new group name. Call it "Green Sector" or whatever. Win + Win situation assured.
RSI = Repetitive Story Issue.
