superplek: yeah, that's exactly my point. Many people here know each other by person, but it doesn't prevent anyone to engage "shit posting", baiting each other etc... and in rare cases even posting very negative or vulgar comments. And this is precisely what "vulgar trolls" are all about (from the guide).
The only question is - do we really want to take any measures to prevent those rare, extreme cases? But it's not the first time we discuss it I suppose. And the usual conclusion was: no.

I (as usual) didn't take the time to dig into the posts or links deeply but I agree; every society or community, be it big or small, can go a long way without being muted to shield it from every little incident. I've met some of the nicest people by trashing on them and then meeting them in the flesh, actually.

The motivation for overly negative comments often comes from a drive to define ones personality by beeing dismissive and disrespectful: "I know who I am because I know what I hate."

I know there are shy, sensitive people who prefer to be unnoticed when their productions are not satisfying others but I would prefer 100 000 times to get negative shit comments if my prods were so shitty than to be politely ignored. No reaction is the most unpleasant thing to get especially when you make an effort and you want to know how others see it
