I'm not against more of this :)
Yeah, why do you want to forbid doping in sports if it helps delivering a better show to the public? Doping is fair if everyone is free to use it. Only the show counts.

except if your peers are these new social justice dummies who judge your work based on what you said to someone..
lolz0rs, those aren't my peers you moron.

Demoscene is not a sport tho??

It's sometimes hard to appreciate something when you know that the person who created it is an asshole.
"I can't get ze fucking trees... Damn! I will kill everyone in the world!"
it's 'ze' world!
created an account just to say that :(
Hahaha, GawdDAAAYUM !! It's a Mirage!!!
Yep, not really here *waves hands in ze air mysteriously *
Admit it, you just created an account to get pouet id #100000!

My mom is dead, you insensitive a-hole
For these threads, pouet really needs that canned laughter you get on sitcoms. All the time.
farfar: no problem - just hit this link whenever you read this thread.
our peers are insensitive a-holes!
I have, in collaboration with farfar, tried to explain demos (and intros and other kinds of releases, sit down already) to interested digital design students, as well as the wider academic HCI community. The way I typically do it, is to say that the demoscene is about performing well under a set of constraints, that is to say that the constraints are imposed by the competition you choose to enter (4k, 64k, platforms etc) but can also be self-chosen (lets do a demo with everything in black and white).
Your success might then be judged on different scales, the most common one probably being winning a competition or getting mad pouet-love. Think the newest Kanye-hit which can both be appreciated by the hiphop-heads for his technical ability, as well as by the common fan for its crowd-appeal and singalongability. A good example of such a feat would be the CNCD and Fairlight productions which bridges incredible skill within self-imposed constraints for the coder-heads, as well as absolutely bizarrely beautiful graphics, composition and music. The "crowd" as it were is competent enough in the demoscene to ensure that both technical and aesthetic constraints are sufficiently challenged to sort of agree what constitutes a great production in the general categories.
However it might also be a more hardcore production, made just for the hardcore fan: Think R.A. The Rugged Man or some other underground thing. Its as good as the CNCD and Fairlight demos technically (or even better sometimes), but it has sacrificed crowd-appeal for the pure love of one or two technical aspects. In essence focusing on a few specific constraints and seeing how far one can take that aspect - think the crazy size-productions that has recently come out, someone coding on a bizarre old platform and so on.
That above explanation, with a general super-fast runthrough of the relevant constraints, usually soooomewhat succeeds in explaining that Demoscene is Magic.

these days being old fucks with zero time or an half-arsed interest to make a demo in a week is also a constraint ;)

maybe you should start your posts by listing all things that offend you.
so you don't have to->

I don't think appreciate is the right word here. Worship fits much better to me :D
Demoscene is very much street gang mentality (or at least holywood impression of street gangs).
The limitations here are very important - it's about giving people hope that if you can overcome them, they can also do it. Maybe not so relevant to the western/rich countries, but say more to the east/south the better ;)
Of course, this only works in theory - when production level is high enough :D
if you go "I will code engine for game" people wil be like "why not use Unity/Unreal?"
if I go "I will code OpenGL/Dx for demo" is normal for demoscene. That's what I like frmo demoscene. We focuse on tech/optimize/democoding. What would be the point of using engine?
So, demoscene focus is personality of what scene is. If scene was prerendered youtube, it wouldn't differenitate.
It;'s a drunk comment but my thought.
There are few gamedevs who still go on their way to do engine. They try to defend, like "I can still use my engine", "I know how it works" but really it's the obsession to make your own tech, a beautiful fthing.
I am fine with athat.

1in10: and maybe you should lighten the fuck up and recognize trolling when you see it =)
Sorry if I flew over a dozen of comments before posting :) I'm currently trying to explain Atari demos to outsiders with my Democyclopedia but I'm skipping the technical details first because I'm no coder then because it's going to bored viewers :)
Anyway I also wrote an article about animations in Atari demos if you care to read it :)
