Arcade games...
Space Invaders, Puckman, Pong, Jungle Hunt... These are present in my personal life since 1985 and earlier... Once went into the oblivion be cause of the "new-outstanding" home computers...
A couple of years ago, I got hooked once again by this marvelous World... Splendid I must say.
Having a few exchanges at some parties, I had a pleasure to notice there are dudes (hail to them;) who are IN too. Great \o/.
Thus this topic...
Are there many of you out there who share the same pixel, code, music, 100Y, candycab/dedicated cabinet passion. Or perhaps not. No memories to share....
Those who would like to share their first COIN experience are openly welcomed. Skipping the school to go to the local Arcade place, smoking a first cigarette behind, and making their Hi-Score on Makaimura, Senjou no Ookami or Defender.
I know in every country it was different. In post-communist countris there was some time-shifting. In Germany, for example, some games were censured thus graphically changed (Senjou no Ookami -> Space Invasion)...
Or some, as Secret/DCS, one would like to share their ROM hacking and training experience.
So... INSERT COIN! Green Warrior needs food badly!

Well my first arcade game played as far as i remember was PacMan (when i was like 5-6 years old), i remember having to climb a chair for playing it LOL.
guess mentioning king of kong and chasing ghosts doesn't count?
Arcade games have been almost just as important to me as home games were - I've had a JAMMA cab at home, later converted to MAME usage... sold that off to mikron/(B) tho later. Now I'm content just playing arcade cabs at scene parties and with fellow collectors :)
But yeah, making a demo for Neo Geo wasn't a coincidence, as I've wanted to do a demo for arcade hardware for the past ten years... finally got that out :)

Also the highlight of our Tokyo trip was an old arcade museum with a lot of awesome 100Y games... like Fantasy Zone!
Oddly my only arcade singular experience relates to what I think was a NeoGeo.
first arcade. god i'm old. the polyplay when i was i dunno... how lil. and i never payed. good i had a dad that worked where they had the key.
I actually remember playing Pong on an arcade machine. It was in a cafe or pub, and I was 5 or younger. I saw it, and it was magical, and I had to play it. So my dad put a coin in, lifted me up so i could reach the controls, and it was game over in like 5 seconds, and I was really disappointed :D
Galaga, somewhere around '82, I think ..
@Visy
Fantasy Zone... The END is so touching... and.... real...
Great game....
I remember once I had to run away from the local "arcade dudes" who bullied all tha li'l guys, at that time...
But the sound of Gauntlet II insered-coin is always omnipresent... (Ding-Ding)...

Would be cool if someone hacked an arcade PCB to make a demo on it :)
Long ago I made plans with Uncle Tom to map the Marble Madness ROM to make more levels. I did find the tiles but the main problem ofc was the heightmap data. :)
Otherwise I've never really had the space for enough gear to be a real collector. I peaked at 2 original cabs + 1 Jamma cab and 30-odd PCBs, now I only have half a dozen PCBs and a cab build that got abandoned from broken screen and manufacture of joypanels...

Battlezone, Dig-Dug, Pole position, Pac-Man and Galaga in early 80.. But my first cigarette were Ghost'n Goblins, Super Hang On and Double Dragon.
@Photon:
Kinda working on some PCBs... CAPCOM CPS1/2 seem to be VERY nice demoish and I wish to have some info about..... But since I am not e coder, my debugging skills are not strong, so I do not expect too much from myself... Althou did some ASM/disASM trainers already....
Any CPS1/2 hackers entusihaists are welcomed...
I have a Taito Egret 2 + a bunch of Jamma PCBs.... a pure pleasure I tell ye...
Looking for more Jamma PCBs atm...

Most of my friends were older than me, watched them playing Shinobi pretty often, while i had no money for arcades! ;)
Later i found a Wonderboy-Arcade at an indoor swimming facility...having had killed the endboss 7 times in a row several times on c=64 already (i guess i used a trainer for unlimited lives atleast!) i started sinking my money into it and i loved it...felt better in all regards compared to the c=64-version, altho that was a really fine port!
I stopped arcades as i got more into coding than gaming afterwards; my newly aquired Amiga had enough new games for my needs!

I always played arcade games as a kid at the local burgerjoint or the campingsite. They always had the newest games, and allot of them. I used to steal coins from my moms piggybank to be able to play. Once she found out, they bought me a Commodore 16 :D
Anyways, the first game that really stood out to me, and that made me choose my professional path, was Bubble Bobble by Taito. When I played that game I was instantly in love. The graphics was magnificent for the time, and the gameplay was terribly hard when you get up in the higher levels. To me, that game means more than any other game, and it inspired me to work on graphics digitally. I would probably kill to get my hands on an original Bubble Bobble machine from back then.
Other really good games from then is ofcourse Ghost'n'Goblins, R-Type, Jakal, Outrun, Golden Axe, Double Dragon and all that jazz.
I had a Mortal Kombat 2 machine, not too many years ago, but well, space got to tight, and sold it again. I'd probably like to have a Neo Geo system setup, but uhrg, those carts are so expensive still, not getting cheaper. So well, emulating is also an option.

I'm not sure exactly when I first came into contact with arcade games. I do remember playing Street Fighter II quite a bit while on a vacation in Eilat, Israel when I was 11 or 12.
When I was 15 an arcade opened in the city where I lived, and me and a couple of friends would sneak out of class for a couple of hours (saying that we needed to go to the downtown library for some research material or whatever) and go spend whatever money we had on playing games there. It was housed in a former night club IIRC, and was fairly large, and had both arcade games and pinball machines. The games I remember playing the most were Die Hard Arcade, Aqua Jet, and Athlete Kings.
I suppose my coolest arcade experience has to be visiting Tokyo a couple of years ago. Not because there are games there that are better than what they have anywhere else, but because there are so many of them. I must've been to 6 or 7 different arcades while I was there, and that's not even all of them. My favorite thing that I saw there (just because of its silliness) was probably this Typing Of The Dead cabinet, complete with a pair of fairly grimey keyboards:
There used to be a pretty decent arcade in Paris called Arcade Street. Maybe it's still there, I haven't been to Paris in a couple of years. When I was there they had the more modern games on the ground floor, while the basement was dedicated to retro games:

I remember going to the arcade to play the newer racing games. I was still too young to drive a car on the streets, but could go racing in the arcade :) The arcade was on the corner of the red-light district for that extra shady feel.
Some time ago a built a MAME cabinet out of an old broken touch-card-game cabinet I found on Ebay for 1,50€. It has gamepads because the games are all so different and there was not much space for "proper" controls, but you can only play if you insert coins for a bit of authenticity. It runs ubuntu, emulationstation and libretro and uses an arduino for the coin receptor interface and was lots of fun to build. Even my girlfriend loves it and we play once in a while when friends visit. I'd love to give it a paint job with some nice pixel art at some point...

We mostly play stuff like Pac-Man, Galaga, Ice climber or Turbo Outrun or shmups like 1942 too.
If you like 1942, you definitely should have a go at "1944 – The Loop Master" ...it´s fairly new, from 2000, but it rocks! :)
Pfft. I'm sure that 1944 is fun enough, but 1942 is *brilliant* for the simple reason that it doesn't have tons of bells'n'whistles.
yep, 1942 rulez ofcoz, never said different! :) Still one of the best arcades of all times for sure!
