Originally a Risc OS game, "Asylum", now available on Linux.

Here is a review of it on YouTube:

So there's the deal. You control one spaceship, which you have a pretty big starting selection to pick up from. They range from starfighters to spacepirates to space-sharks-with-lasers to fuzzy bears to flying saucers, but you can actually customize one using a separated ship factory applet, which has some extra features and can let you design one from scratch.

Then you go inside the infinite space of... your computer looking for adventures. The game uses the directories, subdirectories and files in your harddisk to generate the levels, which vary from space-races to duels until death, all while capturing icons which are converted to credits that will be used to upgrade your ship. There are a good amount of weapons and other kind of enhancements to let your ship become a lethal force.

Chiki Chiki Boys for Sega Mega Drive. A wonderful platform game.

Looks primitive. I mean, nice colors and all, but looks like a simple platform game for small children.

Metal Law Amiga by New Bits On The Ram

Imho more mediocre than a gem, but man these graphics. Also interesting is the title tune by Chris Hülsbeck. New Bits On The Ram also made the Quick & Silva game.

I think the #3/unpopular bit got diluted, so here's my favorite version of Wonderboy in Monster Land, for the SMS:

Grew up playing the C64 version but the SID was never put to stellar use on that. This one has graphics closer to the 16-bit versions but scales the UI out of the way and you have the choice between PSG and FM music with the right equipment or emulation like the Mark III, PBCFM and Virtual Console.

And then, IMO the definitive home version of Rainbow Islands: The Story of Bubble Bobble 2, for the PC Engine CD:

Looks good and plays well and most importantly, has the music intact. Western console releases got the part covering the "Over the Rainbow" theme altered in fear of infringing on copyright and that kills it for me.

A lot of 90s hardware and software was barely localized. the old pcengine software is full of culturally insensetive content and racisn ,just because japan is more of a monoculture lacking migrants ans slave trade. in comparison european software often lacked localization because of budget constraint of too many languages in too close space. emulators , homebrew and fan translations removed many language and culture barriers. try a game from a far away country for a console that was never sold at your place and be inspired how zhey approached digital entertainment differently with different priorities and constrains.

I bought the first one in a garage sale, quickly became addicted to it. I bought the sequel when I was in Japan a few years ago and it's even more awesome. I recently discovered there was a third installment on gamecube so I just installed the hacks on my wii to be able to play imports :)
