WHDLoad for Amiga demos
category: general [glöplog]
Does anyone use this convenient system for watching demos on the Amiga platform?
Currently, I'm using ADFs, DMSs and EXEs for Amiga demo-watching but they take ages to load each time, and I wonder with WHDLoad how much of the original content is altered from the group's vision, and whether purists are OK with this? What's the general consensus on this?
Also, where's the best and largest archive of ready-to-run WHDLoad Amiga demos?

I always run the whdload patches on my real amiga, since it's the only way in many cases to make them work on my 060 stystem.
I also prefer using whdload on winuae, although there are some situations where the whdload patch is buggy but thanx to Stingray, there are less of those now.

I have tried WHDLoad on an A1200 setup on WinUAE and the games run fine, but I just tried it with an A4000-030 setup on WinUAE and they're going crazy, running too fast, glitching, etc. How can I slow them down on such a fast system?
Tried a few demos on WHDLoad, and apart from crashes and bugs, the timings seem way off compared to the disk images.
But then again, Amiga demos have always run best from floppy, being trackmos and all. The waiting is part of the anticipation for one thing.
However, WHDLoad is much better for games, when disk swapping and waiting is not anywhere near as tolerable! :)

So you're saying all WHDLoad demo patches are buggy and crash? I highly doubt that! Besides, it would've helped to name the demo patches that are buggy to be able to fix these problems... As for the timing which is "way off", errm, it should be quite obvious that loading from HD is much faster than any disk-based (track)loader. And if there's no reason to slow down the emulated loader to disk speed it won't be done!

Indeed, because all the trackloaders are extremely reliable on faster CPU's, there are abolutely no bugs in the demos and they sure run fine on all machines when just booted from disk. </sarcasm>
WHDload for demos working fine here on my A1200 + 68060 ... without it, I can't launch correctley lot of them (especially A500 demos).
I have an A600 with SD2IDE as HD and 10MB RAM but no accelerator-card.
Do you thin WHDload is worth a shot or will it be too much for the poor stock 68k?

No, but I know it doesn't work with Workbench 1.3.

Which isn't a problem as he has an A600
wysiwtf: I used WHDLoad on a similar setup, some patches work just fine while some don't

Anarchy's 3D Demo (the first one) crashed before the second half, and didn't look right with the rotating cubes compared to the floppy version.
Absolute Inebriation (Fairlight) was another crasher, if I recall.
Whilst Mahoney & Kaktus' His Master's Noise runs great, I don't know if the reset-part is featured at all - that would be a big loss if it had been cut out.
I'll carry on watching all the demos from KGWHD's website, and report bugs, to be helpful.

WinUAE solves that problem, and is the only alternative to real hardware </win> :)

The recent patches should all work on such config, many older patches have problems running on 68000 machines, sometimes you can't quit, sometimes you'll experience quite some slow-downs due to added blitter waits and other fixes needed to get code running properly on fast CPU's. However, should you encounter such problems you can always open a bugreport on the WHDLoad bugtracker and maybe yours truly or other patchers will update the patch then. :)

Old and crappy patch by the usual suspect. I've redone a lot of his patches already and the 3D demo patch will be redone as well!

I somehow doubt that as Wepl's patches usually work pretty well. However, it's also a very old patch so might be possible there are some problems with it.

The patch for His Master's Noise has some problems that were already mentioned so I'll update the patch in the not too distant future. Reset part will be supported too.

Yes, because emulation is 100% and completely bugfree. </lose>

No, it's not, but as I said, it's the only alternative to real hardware, especially for users with little space and no money to spare.

I know. :) But you'll face different problems when running demos in emulators. There's no perfect solution at all! :)

Yes, I've noticed that.
