Assembly Summer oldskool compo rules

category: parties [glöplog]
Hi!

Since the Assembly Summer oldskool compo is always such a hot topic, we decided to try something new this year.

Crowd sourced rules!

You get to vote from three basic rule sets, the one with the most votes will be what we run in the compo. Only votes in this thread will be counted and you have until and including 2016-02-15 to vote. To clarify: votes posted on 2016-02-16 will not be counted.

Here's what you get to choose from:
1) 8-bit computers. Only original generally available 8-bit computers, no FPGAs, no remakes/clones.
2) Midschool. Pentium 133/ET6000 PCI/GUS, Amiga AGA 060, Atari Falcon 060
3) Year limit 1992. The idea here is not that you start researching the best possible 1992 hw, but more like what normal people could afford in 1992.. So no GUS or other grey area stuff.

So. Vote away!

Br,
The AsmS Oldskool organizers, Jope and Brite

and if it is anyway possible please try to list platforms in scope / out of scope - especially in the grey area to avoid "nillitys".

3. because 2 would mean dropping C64 demos to real wild which feels weird to me.

I would love to bump up the year limit a bit to make AGA+030/50 eligible.

"Ultrasound "Classic": released in 1991, 256 to 1024kB of RAM, GF1 based"
http://www.vogonswiki.com/index.php/Gravis_Ultrasound

Also I remember that early spring winter 1992 Mysdee / Byterapers had GUS already, board version 1.7? (Mysdee can you clarify?)

So that's not really a gray area.

3 - but should be defined more clearly what is allowed

mikron: the "no GUS" will probably stay anyway

1+2.

Why go to all the trouble just to limit the kind of entries people can bring? Just have an oldschool compo & a midschool compo and be done with it.

It's bizarre that none of your proposed rulesets would allow both a C64 demo and a 486+GUS demo to be shown.

"Normal people" price limit is a weasel and needs to be specified or dropped. A3000 was only produced from 90-92, but was it affordable in that sense? Also A600/A1200/A4000 were introduced in 92, thus ranging up to 040@25MHz. Would they all be in?

or 4) computer systems that are no longer (mass-)produced by the original manufacturer. ;)

1. +A500
or
3. limit to 1990

Pentium 133, Falcon, AGA - I remember it as newschool when C64, A500, ZX, XE were called oldschool

The rules will be clarified later, it was just a rough guideline here.

Yes, yes.

They were expensive machines back then, but hobbyists could afford them. I had people with A3000s and A4000/040s in my computer club when these machines were new. Not many hobbyists could afford Sun or SGI hardware back then though.

Hobbyist in 1992 Amigascene = hardware allowed, but de facto pc sound card which was acquirable for the hobbyists (see Mysdee case) at the same time is banned? Lol wtf please.

It might be possible to squeeze two old computer compos in to the very crowded asm timetable, but let's face it, there probably wouldn't be enough productions for both compos at asm.

Indeed, but that's how the compo was run for many years in the 00's. Some people were petitioning for a return to that in the years when we had different rules, so we decided to make it an option.

I wrote no GUS above, but out of curiosity, were there any GUS demos released in 1992? I found some from 1993, but I was very much an Amiga guy during those years, so I don't remember what the PC guys had back then.

mikron: how many PC-demos from '92 can you name that supported GUS?
