STampede intros
category: general [glöplog]
I've done some research into the series of disk-based magazines by Jengrove that were produced for the Atari ST and Amiga platforms, but the data on both is very limited.
I had an Atari STFM before I had my Amiga 500, and I bought the last four issues of STampede and I distinctly remember the high-quality intros being the first time I heard samples in computer music.
I no longer have those disks but they are available online, but it seems the .st files are corrupted so that the main magazine part no longer works, but the intros do. With a bit of effort, I could easily extract the .prg files they consist of.
I think people would like to see these, and they are technically dentros/intros in Scene parlance, so is it possible to add them to Pouet.net?

Hi... you can find the STampede stuff here:
ftp://fujiology.untergrund.net/users/ltk_tscc/fujiology/MAGS/STAMPEDE/
Some of them are protected... therefore the PASTI versions... you can run these under STeem with the PASTI.DLL installed.

You don't understand, I don't want the disk content, I just want to make the intros available as Demoscene prods, as almost all the cracktros in C64 and Amiga games are. Is that permissable?
Why don't you do it then? You don't need our permission.
I can extract the .PRGS no trouble, but some of the intros are .STU files and I don't know if they can be converted. What are .STU files? I don't think the Google results are correct, somehow.
Thank you for saying go-ahead, I was afraid of violating some kind of copyright, but then again Jengrove is long-gone by now, most likely.

The files are ready to upload - can I use Dropbox?
Also, do I leave the group out? There is no group called Jengrove.
BTW, I solved the .STU file problem - turned out it was a .PRG with a different extension.

Just added the prod here:
http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=66816
If someone could move the file to a more permanent storage site, I'd appreciate it.

Please?
LTK, saw your comment: is it too late to separate them and delete the existing prod?
HELLO?
All I'm asking is for a place or help in uploading this prod other than my own Dropbox, and all I get is silence! I tried joining Untergrund.net but to no avail, and I don't see where else I can send it.
PLEASE HELP!

Hi. Dropbox is ok for uploading prods according to the FAQ.
Also, most demoscene services are run for free by volunteers. It may take a day or 2 sometimes to get help from a gloperator since they aren't here working 24hrs a day to answer every question. Just have a little patience instead of spamming so much.

Foebane72 calm down, dropbox with direct download link (?dl=1) is pretty much ok. the general rule on pouet prod pages is to have direct (and preferably permanent) download links, that means no bumper pages with ads, waiting time and so on. Also, if you lack web space, you can upload demoscene stuff to the 'incoming' folder of scene.org using an ftp client. :)
Thanks, and sorry for the spamming, I'm an impatient bastard ;)
Shall I upload them on scene.org under the group "jengrove"? Seeing as that's where the disks came from?

well, seeing that demozoo includes jengrove as a group, i believe that a 'jengrove' folder will suffice. also, splitting the intros and putting each one on a separate .zip is a good idea (like stampede intro 1, stampede intro 2, and so on).
ehhh guys, lotek already has those mags in his archive, so there's no need to upload to scene.org or anywhere else really

These are just the intros I'm including, as I haven't managed to get the disks to work properly under Steem with pasti.dll at all, nor do I know how to.

I will do so and separate them, but I couldn't get the first three intros to load at all - they either load forever or bomb out.

this is something i was wondering from the very beginning actually. haven't seen the issues myself, but if the intro is bundled with the magazine issue, it is, of course, part of the production, so splicing it away as a separate prod, is not a very good idea. still though none of the actual stampede issues seem to exist as prods on pouet, so these can be added at least.

Let me do this, for the issues I can, at least. I started this whole thing about the intros, and if I could complement the Demozoo entries with Pouet.net links, I would be satisfied. I have to admit, I too didn't like the idea of stripping just the intros from what, I recall from memory on a real Atari STFM, were great diskmags.
I've just added the four issues of STampede I can access without crashing, so enjoy:

Any tips on how to get the first three issues to run on Steem under PASTI.DLL? :D

download > unpack > run worked for issue 1
make sure to grab the right version, the non-pasti images won't work
make sure to install pasti AND that pasti is activated in the emulator ("disk manager options" in the floppy menu of steem)
i haxxored your existing entry for the 4 intros combined into an entry for STampede 1
and i added the group and demozoo id's to all your uploads
if you add some stuff again it would be much appreciated if you add the demozoo id and group yourself, you had that data on your screen anyway so thanks in advance ;)

Cool! That solves that problem.

Yeah, I was going to add the group myself this morning but you beat me to it :)

I'll add the last two issues (2 and 3) today.
Just finished adding all the STampede diskmags to Pouet. Have linked to PASTI versions as havoc did with #1 as they are the complete package, magazine content and all.
Good job, Foebane! It is much better than splicing the prod and uploading the parts separately. The atari world on pouet became a bit richer with the addition of this collection! :)
:)
