What does "100%" mean in a prod title?

category: general [glöplog]

I see it appear sometimes, but I was just wondering what makes this version of a prod 100% and not the other?

The creators of the prod saying "this is the final version".
pure alcohol!
not enough ideas for 200%
Neither for 1000%

It's a reference back to the cracking scene of the 80s. Sometimes there were game releases where the crack and/or trainer didn't work properly. A fixed version was then released (often by a competing group), which was labeled '100%' to indicate that this was the proper version, not the earlier broken release.

For some examples, see how many cracktros turn up on csdb when you seach for 100%:

You release a 101%.

And if that's still broken, you release a 102%.

And if that's still broken somehow, you release a 103%.

And if that's yet again still broken somehow, you release a 104%.

And if that's yet again still broken somehow even after all those tries, you should just stop... or release a 105%.

And so on!

then some other group comes and steals your crack, adds a cheap trainer mode and calls it 110%

it's the 'new international standard' established and agreed upon in 1987 among c64 elite at the Danish Gold Party

for categorising the insane amount of floppies, no doubt
"Others made cracks, then 100% updates to these cracks, followed by 101% cracks. HQC _never ever_ did such a thing. HQC crack(ing)s simply _worked_. Period."

Thanks for the question and answers/comments! As I'm not very familiar regarding the historical bits of the cracking scene, it's very fascinating to read these things. :)

No problem guys, those were the days, here's another production announcing the agreement with some more info in the scrollers:

Well, if I download a C64 demo that has that on the end of it, I'll rename it to knock it off, as I'd only go for the 100%s anyway.

So you rename it to something that is not its official title, just so that you will become confused later if it's really the 100% version or not?
reminds me of the days when i strictly named my mp3s in a 8.3 fashion (for the occasional dosamp use) and was angry at all those silly group-tags in them...
surprisingly, later they became a sign of quality :P
